March 2025 confirmations
Dear All,
Finally I can post some more confirmations! We will begin with SOHO:

Lots of things to talk about...
Some terminology points. I am naming the new CCOR-1 comets as "CCR1xxxx" (versus, say, "CCORxxxx"). The reason for this is that CCOR-2 should be launching on SWFO-L1 in September, and that instrument will probably discover as many comets as CCOR-1. So we will need to distinguish CCOR-1 from CCOR-2 from LASCO from...
There are two CCOR-1 reports from Jiangao on February 8 - here and here. I cannot see any comet in this data other than CCOR-0004, which was already confirmed. It's very possible/likely that I am confused by the coordinate system, so updates on this would be appreciated. For now, I am not including them.
I was asked again to reconsider this report from Jiangao of a C2 Kreutz in 2022. I looked at the data using four different data processing techniques, and spent a long time trying to see something there. I simply cannot see anything that looks like a comet in those data, so unfortunately I am still unable to confirm it.
Also, I keep meaning to note that Simone Renai sent me an email a few months ago pointing out that SOHO-4866 (Archive Kreutz) was a repeat of SOHO-4330. So I am going to keep the "4330" slot vacant until an appropriate archive comet comes along (which I'm sure it will).
I am sure that you have all noticed that I am a few months behind in confirmations. There are several reasons. First, I have just been very busy on many other tasks. Second, I had to update my software to work with CCOR images. We still do not have good pointing/distortion corrections for this data, so I am currently unable to record the astrometry -- I can only mark down the x,y positions, and I will need to convert that to RA/DEC later (not too difficult). Third, trying to convert the reported x,y positions for CCOR into x,y positions that match mine was also very tricky. I don't see an easy solution for that any time soon, and it will always just add time. Fourth, there are clearly a LOT of comets being found in CCOR-1. It would seem that the Kreutz we would normally only see during the "LASCO C2 seasons" are clearly visible in CCOR-1. So this means that months such as March that would normally be quiet (four SOHO discoveries), are now as busy as any other time of the year (16 CCOR-1 discoveries!). Finally, it is complicated looking for CCOR discoveries in LASCO images, and I am still incomplete on that task.
The bottom line is that the additional CCOR-1 influx of data and comets is proving to be an exceptional challenge for me, and what used to take me maybe 5-10 minutes per comet now can take up to 30 minutes per comet, sometimes more. That adds up to a lot of hours that I don't have available. At some point I will need to come up with a plan that includes all of you in the process of measuring comets -- probably by way of supplying you with software tools that you can use to look for, measure, and report, in a uniform format. But right now you all are using a different CCOR FITS data product than I am (we have our own, which eventually I hope we will share, but that's not up to me). So all I can do is ask for your patience and understanding as I try to adapt to all this...
One final notice -- because I clearly am not busy enough already -- is that literally five minutes ago we released the WISPR Encounter 22 and 23 data. So that will likely mean a few more comet discoveries. Speaking of which, I have a report from Matthew Knight of this obvious comet in WISPR-I from 2020:

Neither he or I can figure out what object it is, but I am not convinced it is new. So if any of you happen to have been keeping track, and/or know what that comet is, please let me know! Otherwise, it will be a new discovery (which I hope is the case, because Matthew has worked with Sungrazers his entire career yet never had time/opportunity to discover one!) You can find that FITS data here.
I'm sure there is something else important I am forgetting, but this is enough for today. As always, please email me with any questions, comments, complaints, or concerns.
