Dear All,

It looks very much to me like the two recent C2 non-group comets are absolutely
fragments of 96P/Machholz! In some ways I am amazed, but in others perhaps not.

You may have seen the new article I posted to the Sungrazer site last week (see link
on the home page) discussing the very complex "Machholz family". The only way this
group could get so large and so varied is by it having a habit of losing chunks of itself.
So, while I am truly surprised that we are seeing fragments of Machholz, it is also *not*
surprising given that this comet (or this "family", I should say) has a tendency to do
just that. 

What is also very interesting to me is that this fragmentation event must have occurred 
at the previous perihelion passage, given the separation that they all have.

For those of you wondering, these objects will be given "SOHO" designations, and the
credit for detections will be given to Liang Liu and Prafull Sharma. Many
congratulations to both!

PS: I suppose there is still a chance that these are unrelated non-group objects, and not
fragments of 96P... but I really don't imagine that to be the case.
