Dear All,

My apologies for not informing you sooner. On Friday May 4, SOHO went into ESR 
(Emergency Sun Reacquisition) mode. It looks like it was an anomaly in the "Coarse 
Sun Pointing Attitude Anomaly Detector", which is a very simple sensor that looks
out for SOHO not pointing at the Sun, and triggers events that "safe" the spacecraft
in that event. I think we've had this detector go off unexpectedly a few times over the
past few years. Anyway, the good news is SOHO seems to be fine, and the recovery is
underway. We don't have very good DSN contact this week so it is going to be slower
than usual. Hopefully we should have LASCO back within a few days though.

Dear All,

As you saw, we got some LASCO data last night. Unfortunately yet another ESR was triggered
at 20:34UT yesterday. They have recovered from that one and there's a chance that we
could start getting data again tonight. However, it is a significant concern that the CSPAAD
returned yet another bad reading...

I'll keep you updated as I hear things.

Hi All,

SOHO is back online! LASCO began observations May 11 10:30UT. A lot of guys, from
ESA in particular, were up very late last night getting everything back online. So we should
all give them a well-deserved round of applause! :)

As you might know, SOHO was launched in 1995 and only planned to last for two years.
It was "lost" for a few months in 1998, following a commanding error, losing all contact
and almost freezing solid. Yet somehow they miraculously recovered it, got it working, 
and saved 15 or 16 instruments. Over the following years, various malfunctions and 
system failures have happened, and time and time again the SOHO team have pulled
together and worked around these problems. As a consequence of having such an 
amazing team, we're now in our 17th year of a 2-year mission! Hopefully now we will 
get to 20, and beyond!

The only comment I'll make here is regarding the Mar17 Non-group comet.
I am still in two minds whether to designate it as one or two objects. 
We have seen several instances of closely-paired fragments and there 
always comes a point at which the fragments are too close to one-another 
for me to call them as separate. So this was a great example and is 
really pushing the boundary for me as to whether I am to declare two new 
objects or just one. With reservations, I am going to change what I had 
initially decided, and will designate it as two objects, despite my 
unease at doing so.

So how does this look to everyone? Please let me know of any errors,
etc, as soon as possible, before I get too far into the May 2012 
confirmations.

Note that I was eventually able to see *something* in Bo Zhou's 
non-group claim but there is nothing there that I'm willing to say is
absolutely real. It has to be an x-comet (XC-77, I think).

Finally, many congratulations to Sergei for finding more than half of
all the April discoveries! Excellent work, particularly for someone
so new to SOHO comet hunting.

Look OK so far? I did not see any discoveries on the SohoHunter
page for this time period but if there are any then please point
those out to me. I'd like to try and get SOHO-2300 correct because
it's not very nice to take those "milestone" discoveries away from
someone because of an error on my part!
