SOHO-LASCO Comet Reports for 200609

I have the timetable for the keyhole.

09/05/06 1800UT LASCO doors close for maneuvers

09/07/06 2200UT LASCO resumes observations

09/11/06 spacecraft roll to 0 deg. (LASCO idle during roll)

Note that we will only have realtime data for LASCO until late on

September 15. That means that essentially no data gaps will get

filled. Remember that you can always check the spacecraft schedule

to see when we are in contact (and, therefore, have data):

Well, it looks like we only have six or seven images showing 

Tony's Kreutz. Oh well, better than nothing, I suppose... 

Well done to Hua Su for spotting the first Meyer-group comet we

have had in a very long time! Fortunately we got plenty of images

for that one.

We should get our normal image quota back next week. Until then, 

please keeping checking what few images we have for the return of

C/2002 R5 (there's a prize for its recovery...).

Please note that I am going to be making some (reasonably big)

changes to the comet report form today. It may or may not work

for short periods of time. We have no new images for about three

more hours yet, though, so this shouldn't impact many of you.

As with all changes I make to the sungrazer website, I strongly

encourage and appreciate feedback, whether it be criticism, bug

reports, compliments or suggestions.

OK, well that all went better than I thought it would...

You should all see a noticeable change to the report form. First,

the "Name" drop-down has been moved to the top of the form. 

Second, a series of "help" buttons have been added next to the 

report form fields. Third, the "Clear Form" and "Reset All" buttons

have changed name and _actually work_ now! :) Most importantly of

all, you will see that the preview boxes have disappeared, along

with the "Submit" button. Now, once you hit "preview", your report

is dynamically previewed in the red/pink area indicated on the page. 

The submit button also does not appear until you have hit the preview

button. Cool, eh?!

I have tested this on a couple of different browsers and it appears

to work fine. **PLEASE email me any bugs/problems!!** One slightly

negative side-effect is that you can no longer post "double reports"

(e.g. press preview twice and make two reports in one go). I do

intend on adding this functionality, but it's tricky...

Since this is such a major change to the report form, I have made

the old one available for a short time at the following address:

ares.nrl.navy.mil/sungrazer/oldcometform.html

Please take a few minutes to play with the new form and familiarize

yourself with it. Do not press submit, though, unless it's a real

report you are making!

Wow! Many congratulations to Rob on his five-comet haul! It is 

amazing for several reasons, including the first time we've had

five C3 comets in less than a day and the first time a comet 

hunter has found five realtime comets in a day (four of which

were within less than an hour)!! Amazing stuff -- well done, Rob!

We're officially out of that horrible keyhole now so we should

have plenty of realtime data and almost all gaps filled 100%.

--

I hope you all like (or at least tolerate) that changes I have

made to the comet report form. Please let me know if you have

any problems with it. I have decided to keep a permanent link to

the old repotr form in case any of you have a preference. The

link can be found immediately beneath the current report form.

Kevin: I think you've figured out already that the object you

are reporting is Vesta. I had actually meant to point it out 

to everyone before now, but kept forgetting. It can be clearly 

seen in the upper right-hand corner of the images travelling

left-to-right at a much slower pace than the background stars.
