Regarding Mike Oates' claim (welcome back, Mike!), it looks real enough
but I have concerns. The first one is that this is the earliest in the
year we've ever had a C2-only Kreutz. The previous earliest was on
Mar 19.79 (2000)-- only two weeks from now -- but most C2-only Kreutz
don't appear until early April. But there's always a first, I guess...
My second problem is that it evaporates after four frames. I don't
normally accept C2 claims with less than five frames. However, I am
going to tentatively "ok" this one (some C3 obs would make a big
difference... anyone got any??). I'll send it off with my next set of
astrometry and let Brian have the final say on it. |

Hello all,
I'm done with my most recent set of confirmations, but I'm waiting on
word of Mike Oates' questionable C2 Kreutz from last week before I do
any numbering of comets. I will say the following though. Kazimieras'
C3 claim from Mar 14 2005 13:01:59 is the same comet as Xavier's C2
claim from Mar 14 2005 11:14:03. It looks very likely that Xavier's
C3 claim from today (09:32:12) is the Kreutz Tony reported in C2 at
09:29:23. I can not confirm any of the fragment/companion claims we
have had.

Well considering it's March, that's an awful lot of comets we've had
lately! Mike Oates' Kreutz was deemed real by Brian (see latest MPEC).
I am assuming here that Xavier's C3 claim is the same as Tony's C2.
Note Rainer's archive non-group claim. I have 11 or 12 positions for
the object -- I'm certain it's real but I guess there's always the
chance it is a "known" comet. I'm sending the astrometry for it
tomorrow.

So, unless I'm mistaken, this puts Rainer and Mike on joint top-spot
for the number of comet discoveries -- they both have 144! Very
impressive!

As some have you have seen already, MPEC 2005-F31 contains three
archive comets, all discovered by Rainer Kracht:
C/1997 B4 == SOHO-923 (non-group)
C/1997 V7 == SOHO-929 (non-group)
C/1996 V2 == SOHO-930 (Marsden)
The archive Kreutz comets I have received will get sent in the next
week-or-so -- I prioritized the non-group/marsden comets as I was
unsure of whether they were "real" or not.

As there have been several archive claims recently, now would be a
good time to notify you all that when the comet-count gets to ~985, I
will suspend confirmation of archive claims until after #1000 has been
found. I will only be confirming "real-time" claims between (roughly)
soho-985 and soho-1000. Of course, archive claims should be emailed to
me and I will save them until post-1000. More on this nearer the time.

Another nice archive find by Rainer. This one is a bright Meyer-group
comet. I have six C2 and twelve C3 positions for it. This is by far
"earliest" Meyer-group comet we have so far -- the Meyer-group
discoveries now span over 8.5 years!

My report (below) is a great "working example":
Let's say that my report turns out to be a comet (it won't). Clearly I
have copied Robert's report and added my own position. He reported the
comet way before me. He obviously saw it before me. So who would get
the credit for this comet? I WOULD!!!

I can't believe how many comets we've had so far this month -- amazing!
Although Bo Zhou's comet should be visible in C3, and he did give
positions for it, they're too close to the occulter arm to be certain
and to be of use, so I'll stick with just C2 measurements.
I can not confirm Hua Su's C3 claim of Mar 29 2005 09:14:36.
