Comet C/2004 R2 (ASAS) is entering the LASCO C3 field of view. It's
looking much brighter than K4 (LINEAR) did -- yay! It will give the
appearance of following a Kreutz-like path, but it is not a Kreutz
sungrazer, and is not an undiscovered comet, so please don't report
it!!! The track it will follow can be seen here:

I'm assuming Rainer's Kreutz will be visible in C2, but last I checked
we didn't yet have the appropriate images.
Once again, I'm just going to take the opportunity to remind people that
the very bright comet currently in C3 is C/2004 R2 (ASAS). It's not a
Kreutz, it's not 'undiscovered' and it doesn't need reporting! :)
The actual track of ASAS appears to be about 70-pixels to the left of my
initial prediction. My latest estimates put ASAS in C2 around 10UT
tomorrow (Oct07) and leaving C2 around 7UT on Oct8.
Ah, new images just in... Rainer's Kreutz hit C2 at 0207 and is visible
to at least 0355.

I'm reporting a "possible" fragment on the right side of Comet C/2004
R2 (ASAS) in C2. And I also thought I saw an "anti-tail" begining on
image 20041008_0054_C2. Note I used "0,0" for me in the UPPER RIGHT
as that is what part of the image I am looking at.

Congrats to Rainer for what *should* be Meyer-group comet number 50!
Albeit out of sequence, tomorrow I will send off the astrometry for
SOHO-843, so Brian Marsden can confirm (or deny... there are only five
images...) it, and Maik can finally rest easy knowing he only has to pay
to ship the Meyer-group #50 prize across Germany, and not to the US or
Asia! :)

Congratulations to Heiner on a great non-group find! This is potentially
SOHO's fourth ground-observable discovery! Over the coming days I will
do the astrometry on it, and get it sent off to Brian by thursday or
friday. The other comets can wait the usual four or five weeks until I
have the final data processed for them.

The jury is out on this. The gifs are no good for seeing it -- too much
detail is lost in them in the corners of the images -- you need fits
images for the extra detail needed here. I concur with Rainer on 981,930
for the 1354 image. Hopefully the 1530 image will hold the answer...

I can confirm the Rainer's 'fragment' claim. However, from what I have
seen of the comet in C3, the fragment may end up as a C2-only comet.
There does not appear to be sufficient separation in C3 for me to be
able to distinguish the fragment as a separate body when I do the
astrometry for this pair. In C3 the comet appears sometimes as just
elongated, sometimes as a "figure-eight" shape, but never completely
separate (due to the relatively low resolution of c3). As Heiner's
report was first, he gets the C3/C2 comet.
The suspected Meyer comet from a few days ago looks to be real so that
will be SOHO-847 -- I might send it off to Brian early, just to be sure.
That makes Heiner's Kreutz SOHO-848 and Rainer's fragment SOHO-849.
These are subject to change, however, depending on the outcome of ?847?. |

On a related matter, I will soon be adding a new option to the comet
report form -- "Potential fragment/companion". This should be used when
you are reporting an object *close* to an existing one. I think it will
help clear up a few ambiguities.

All viable claims have been checked (including Xavier's claim from
Oct 27 2004 14:43:09 -- not a comet).
Several people have commented to me how untidy the site has been
lately -- I agree. So, at risk of repeating myself AGAIN...
#1: If you can't find an object in more than four images I CAN NOT
confirm it, so retract your claim! (you're all usually very good on
this one).
#2: Preferably before, and definitely after, you post a claim, check
the reports page to see if anyone has reported the object before you.
If they have, there is no need for you to post updates/correction/etc.
Leave that to whoever first found the object.
#3: Confirmations should be left to experienced comet hunters. I have
actually fixed the report form so newbies can not do confirmations
until they gain some experience.
#4: Once someone 'confirms' a comet, I need _no_more_updates_ on it,
unless the original post only contained two or three positons. I do,
however, appreciate the "Known comet entering" posts -- they help me.
They too are now restricted to experienced hunters only.
#5: If you want to clarify anything, please make use of the comment
forms. I receive tham as soon as they are sent and as long as I'm by
my computer I can have them posted within a minute. Of course, at
weekends they won't get posted that soon.
#6: In general, just try and be aware of what comets are in the field
of view, and what posts are on the reports page. PLEASE try to avoid
replicating reports -- have the report page open in a second window
and keep refreshing it.
