OK, lots to say...
First, Dave: I could see what you were looking at but I doubt it
was a comet/fragment. It varied in size and brightness and looked
a whole lot like noise. In fact if you watch the other comet in
that FOV, at time it's possible to pick out 'comet-like' noise
ahead of that one too. The same goes for many C3 comets in fact.
Pablo: You were correct in thinking they were comets, but
unfortunately Tony Hoffman and XingMing Zhou had already found
them! At least you know what to look for now! Better luck next
time! I couldn't see Tony's or XingMing's comets in C2, but let
me know if I'm mistaken. I have not looked at DongHua Chen's
claim yet -- I'll let it sit for a bit first...
OK, very shortly I'm going to make the new comet report form
operational. It is going to be /cometform.html as always. So just
click "Found Something?" and you'll be there. HOWEVER, until it's
been fully field tested, the old form will still be available to
you. It will be at ares.nrl.navy.mil/sungrazer/oldcometform.html .
I do want you all to use the new one but if there are any problems
with it, use the old one. NOTE: within a week the old one will be
gone permanently. If you wish to submit comments to the site,
please use the comments form I have created (link at bottom of
new report form page). The instructions page
/sungrazer/instruct.html should answer any further questions you
may have.
There are two known bugs/quirks to it:
1) The "Clear Form" button doesn't work yet (it's really bugging
me too...)
2) There's a display issue with Netscape6 and 7 -- the first line
in the text area looks messed up when you press 'preview'. This
is a problem with the browser, not my code, and I doubt it'll go
away soon. HOWEVER, it does not appear messed up when it's submitted.
(the post from "New User" was a test to determine this). In fact
if you highlight the text with your cursor, the problem disappears.

OK cancel that last post. Rainer's post has appeared. We are
(were) having one or two network problems so ares might be a bit
unresponsive at times. I've had problems accessing it every now
and then. As long as you see the page come up that says your
entry has been logged as '...', then your details have been
submitted. So even if nothing appears on the site, I can access
the archives and retrieve your info.
While I'm here... I'm going to remove the oldcometform.html page
shortly. The new form has had one or two teething problems, but
all of your posts are getting through ok. Thanks for your patience
with it!
I am going to run a test in a bit though. Ignore any bizarre posts
you see from New User.

I haven't actually looked at Rainer's most recent claim (747) but
I think it's a pretty safe assumption that it's genuine!
I looked at C3 for Rainer's non-group comet. I picked out a
couple of points that seemed they might fit, but to be honest I
wasn't certain on it, so I'm sticking with C2 unless anyone
requests otherwise. I also couldn't see it to the 'left' of the
sun, but once again, please let me know if you think you can.
I saw nothing at DongHua Chen's claim of Mar03, 2004 23:45:38.

I know I don't normally do 'realtime' confirmations, but I'm
making an exception -- congratulations Sebastian on discovering
SOHO's 750th comet!! Another great milestone! Next stop, 1000!!
Of course, I haven't taken a complete set of measures for it, but
there's no doubt it's real. I've plotted it from 7:53 to 11:25 on
2048x2048 images (I usually double the image size -- it makes
things much easier to see).
I haven't checked C2 for Rainer's kreutz (749) but Mike said it's
there so I trust that. I'll check it later today.

Hi all,
An abundance of newcomers this morning! I will add all the new names to the list soon.
I just noticed you retracted your claim, Mike. I'll check it out regardless, since it has been "confirmed" by another. However, I would like to say to the newcomers that I would prefer you to gain a little more experience with SOHO comets before 'confirming' claims. I check all claims unless they are retracted (Mike's will be an exception), regardless of whether they are 'confirmed' by a co-hunter or not.

Possible comet is very faint.
Also I have been told my Y positions maybe off by 4-6 values...I do not know why...I use the Java Console provided (?)

Just warning you about the upcoming SOHO roll on the 30th. The
current schedule is as follows:
- LASCO safes at 11 UT, Monday March 29th
- SOHO rolls on Tuesday March 30th
- LASCO recovery some time after 18:30 UT, Wednesday March 31st.
