Note that I have gone ahead with my plan to shuffle the numbers
slightly. XingMing has been promoted to 674, while Jim has gone
down to 673. I don't intend to make a habit of shuffling the
numbers like that -- it just seemed reasonable here. Also note
Mike's comet which I'd previously skipped inadvertantly. It was
his other unretracted claim that I looked at and decided was an
X-comet (8/25/03 12:17:18).
Comet 683 gets joint credit. Both Mike's and John's initail
reports contained errors, but I'm reasonably confident they were
both looking at the comet itself. Jim was the first to follow the
guidlines and post four accurate positions. PLEASE NOTE: In
future I will not be as lenient! Inaccurate postings will lose
you any split decisions! Please take an extra 30 seconds to check
your post before hitting "submit". Posts that claim "I hit submit
by accident" will be treated with contempt and suspicion!
On a happier note, I'm less than a year behind on the measuring,
and I'm catching up nicely with the confirming too!
Email me with any questions/comments/complaints/compliments...

Also...
Thanks to Jonathan Shanklin for reminding me -- I meant to comment
on the other unretracted claims for that period. Rob Matson's comet
(Oct 16th) is an X-comet. There's definitely a comet there in the
first two images, but after that it's just noise and guess-work. Jim
Danaher's report (Nov 03) of the fragment in the tail of Mike's (?)
comet, is a little too optimistic.
By the way, I hope you all enjoyed the irony of my 'accuracy of
postings' lecture containing two spelling mistakes...

UPDATE on new Kruetz comet in C3 @ 20040121_1020 UT
Unrotated = 'wrong' way up (occulter arm in top right)
Jim's comet is the bright one in C3 which is nearing
the occultating disk.
This new comet is far behind his, and I have traced
it back to 0842 UT.
I hope the above Unrotated will not mess up my XY's.

Rob Matson made a claim 12/05/03 20:30:47. I'm pretty sure
there's a comet there. Unfortunately there aren't many 'useful'
images around that time and I couldn't get consecutive positions
without resorting to guesswork. So it's an X-comet.
I looked for Maik's Meyer comet in C3 but couldn't find it, and
the same goes for Rainer's Kreutz (712) -- that one I suspect is
hidden by the occulter arm.
I'll finish off the December confirmations next week -- I'll have
processed the level_05 data for that period by then.
Martin: What you reported was almost certainly stars and/or
cosmic rays. New comet hunters are more than welcome here, but
please take time to look around at the site, particularly the
"Found Something?" page and some of the links on the "Other
Links" page. The java tool on
http://lasco-www.nrl.navy.mil/javagif/ is ideal for measuring
xy's.
