I believe it likely that Mike Boschat's C2 claim
of Dec 01 2003 10:21:39 is a real comet; I'm able to track something in six positions:
20031201_1506 173,893
20031201_1450 173,909
20031201_1426 172,931
20031201_1406 171,949
20031201_1350 171,963
20031201_1327 170,983
The problem is that the 1406 position is very weak (at the background noise level), and the object abruptly disappears
after 1506. If a real comet, it seems to go through a brightening
while crossing the coronal streamer at 1450 and 1506, but then it
vanishes utterly. Although I can't definitively confirm it, I think there's a good case for it as at least an X-comet.

Hi, Heiner--
I believe it is Vesta. Guide shows Vesta to be
quite near there, and don't forget that SOHO's
perspective is not from Earth but from about
1 million km from us. It often causes a slight
but measurable displacement in position for
solar-system objects, even a minor planet
at conjunction with the sun.

Roberto and others asking for this:
Here it is *not* the appropriate place to report SWAN objects.
This was discussed several times on sohohunter and there are
various statements from the former officials not to do so! If
somebody is conviced he has found something in SWAN data this
should be *checked carefully* (perhaps with the help of more
experienced people who are contacted *privately*) and then
submitted directly to the official places like CBAT and MPC.
Only *they* can give you whatever credit, here no one can do so
(neither SOHO personal nor other comet hunters).

Hi all,
Thank you all for your ongoing patience over the past few weeks.
I have spent that time going over the software/procedures used
here and have looked at many of the results left by Derek to get
a feel for what is / isn't a comet. I'm now in a position to
start confirming (and denying!) comet reports.
I'd just like to emphasise some of the rules, and perhaps add a
couple...
1) I will not spend my time checking reports of comets with less
than 4 xy's UNLESS someone else confirms it as a VERY obvious comet!
2) Please try not to be too hasty in posting claims -- there has
been an increasing amount of 'junk' posted recently.
3) Please don't 'confirm' a person's comet if there are less than
4 xy's UNLESS it is VERY obvious.
4) Please be as accurate as you can when giving your xy's -- it
makes my life a whole lot easier! Always clearly state your (0,0)
position.
5) For the next few weeks, until I've really caught up with the
substantial backlog, please err on the side of caution when
reporting. If in doubt, don't post it! You all have a lot of
comets to your name, so it wouldn't hurt to go easy for a bit.
I do not want to see any of these "could be noise" posts!!!!
I think the theme of the above post is fairly clear. I have a lot
of comets to catch up on, and to enable me to do that as quickly
as possible, I need your understanding and cooperation.
Having said all that, I look forward to 'working' with you all!
I'll hopefully be posting some confirmations by the end of the
day. Please don't hesitate to email me with any questions.

Mike Boschat made a second claim on Aug 24th. I could see
something in one or two of the images, but I was by no means
convinced -- I'm going to put it down as an X-Comet.
A word as to my procedure for confirming/measuring. I am going to
try and split my time evenly between doing these confirmations
and measuring the comets to be sent of for official designation.
I will be confirming in numerical order, so the claims you make
today, for example, probably won't be confirmed for a few weeks.
I am going to be working exclusively from Tony's list until I
reach the current claims (~SOHO705). You should all check this
list (it's on the yahoo sohohunter pages) and make sure your
*valid* claims are on there. If they're not, let me know or they
won't get checked!!!

Please note: the Soho numbers are not final. I have been trying
to find the comet reported by Rainer Kracht 8/26/03 11:11:48. I
have been looking and looking and looking... I can't see a thing
there, but as it's an alleged Marsden group comet I don't want to
give up on it just yet. If I can find it, it will become Soho656
and all the others will move up one. However, time restrictions
mean I can't spend much longer on it, so the numbers will
probably stay as they are.
On a separate note, we have a SOHO roll coming up. LASCO will
close Monday 29th Dec ~22:00UT and open again Wed 31st Dec
~21:00UT. So you can all have a nice 47hr vacation! Enjoy!

Brief description:
Bright fast moving object, not very bright to be

across the stars.
Positions: 256x256, images: 2003/12/23 18:18 -

The brightness of John's Dec 28 2003 16:34:35 comet
excludes that this is a small fragment of XingMing's comet,
which should have been seen in the C2 images of
20:20 and 20:40 even if it arrived about 19:00 as I had
expected. So the most simple explanation is that there
is only one comet (discovered by XingMing). It entered
the C2 field 21:20 UTC.
