This is more of a question. Aug 30 2003 was a very clear night in Normandy France and I was looking at the sky especially Mars, with simple binoculars when I saw what appeared to be a comet. I don't know how to situate it exactly but it was in the middle of the Eastern sky a little North at the apex of a serries of stars that formed an acute angle pointing upward and to the NE. Now that I have everyone laughing, does this correspond to any recent sightings? Just curious. (It was just barely visible with the naked eye once I had spotted it with the binoculars).

Monte,

this is Mercury. Remember, if something moves horizontally it
is almost every time a star or a planet. The transit list can
be accessed at http://ares.nrl.navy.mil/sungrazer/ or you may
simply use a planetarium software. By the way, more than 5 to
10 positions are not neccessary to post.

Congrats Kazimieras!

The apparent track (and velocity) in C2 is similar to the
tracks (and velocities) of the low inclination SOHO comets
C/1999 R1 and C/2002 R5.

Disregard my post of Sep 15 2003 18:43:45

After further study and correspondence
with others we conclude that "noise"
was the result.

Fast moving object, brightening in time, until it is out of the

field of the wide-field camera, Lasco C3; no coma seen; no tail;
does not appear to be an "extended" object, but, interestingly,
like a point-source; very bright, but not saturated; motion is
westwards (retrograde). I measured the 1024 x 1024 images rather
roughly, using a cardboard straightedge which I calibrated in
pixels. I try to use your standard reporting format below. I
obtained rough RA and Dec of the object from the images, and
checked the MPC "MPC Checker" for know objects: object does not
appear to be known; I hope it may be new. I hope you will extract
the accurate astrometry and check the status of this object.

Pixel coordinate measurements, with (0,0) at the bottom left of the
screen, are given below for the object on four days between 2003 Sept. 11 and Sept 14.

Thank you!

Joe--

What you've reported seems to be Mercury; it's displaced
about 15 arc-minutes from its position in Guide but otherwise
behaving as the planet would in motion and brightness; I think
the positional displacement is due to SOHO's halo orbit
1 million km from us, combined with the planet's position
at inferior conjunction. Interesting observation; I wasn't sure
what it was at first.

Negative, Tony; that's Mercury on the LEFT, badly saturated and sporting saturation tails (blooming) in the x-coordinate direction. See how it's (Mercury's) moving slowly in the increasing Ecliptic Longitude direction (approximately Eastwards), approaching a Stationary Point on Sept. 19 (2003).

The comet-suspect I noted is on the other side of the Sun in the images (right-hand), and moving in the opposite direction from Mercury, and, moreover, is not saturated (by a long shot), but it becomes steadily brighter between Sept. 11-14 (2003), and becomes about as bright as the brightest field-stars imaged on those days.

Granted, although Mercury (on the Left...) is only some 8 degrees elongation from the Sun, that is elongation enough for Mercury to display sufficient sunlit surface toward us (and Lasco C3) to constitute a lot of reflected light (and enough to more than saturate, evidently).

Please have another look, try to identify Mercury, (at about "9:30" position from the Sun), and then find the fainter fast-mover I found, running, on the earliest date I noted, from about "6:00", to the edge of the field (and over...) at about "3:30", on the latest date.

Let's see what the fellers at the SOHO office say on Thursday, daytime (there).

Maybe my suspect is a small natural near L1, where SOHO is, but slightly nearer the Sun? An orbital period just slightly different from SOHO's could carry it across the field of view in a few days, as we see has happened. Far as I know, no such (natural) objects have been discovered (nor at L4, nor L5, although ground-based searches have been made: of course, ground-based searches at L1 cannot be made, except during total Solar eclipses!, and, then, for just a few minutes, at most; this suspect's inclination, by the way, appears to be non-zero, and slightly positive).

But I'll be happy if the object is a comet.

Cheers!

There seems to be some confusion here. The C3 transits page says there's a two month long "Right to Left" transit of Venus just ending -- so the "big saturated image at 9:30 position" is Venus. The fainter "left-to-right" transit from Sep 7-15, the object reported by Joe, is Mercury. Both were fairly obvious on the MPG of the week, and I made sure to check them both out before "reporting" them.

Re the object in the last post: Does anyone have access to a good asteroid almanac? I noticed this object yesterday and tenatively assumed that it was one of the big ones (Ceres, Pallas, Juno or Vesta; think that the last two aren't near the Sun right now, though).

All that notwithstanding, I sincerely hope that it really IS something new and strange!:) Good luck.

Hello guys,

just saw your dicussion on the "comet" reported by Joe. Since I am
the creater of the C3 planet transit list this year let be warn you:

SOHO is rolled for a few months now but images remain as they were,
so all directions in the list are wrong. "Left to right" means
"right to left now, and vice versa.

Questions on the list may be directed to me or discussed on the
sohohunter yahoogroup.

THESE objects have just LEFT the field.

VENUS --- at the 9 pm position
MERCURY - near the 5 pm position

And that is the fact of it all. No comet
but 2 planets.

"Beginner's Luck", I suppose, in having two inner-planets in the C3
field. What I believed to be "Mercury" is in fact Venus, and my
comet- or asteroid-suspect is in fact Mercury.

Thanks to all of you for your help. False alarm. I' m sorry I
