There is a possible comet in the mpeg C2 images of July 4, 2003. Like the other report, this object can be seen moving south to north in only 2 images. The object doesn't appear to have a tail. I found the object today (July 5, 2003) at 11:23 U.T. The object is seen in the upper left limb (0,0) of the sun in these two images: 2003/07/03 00:54 and 2003/07/03 1:30. In the second image the object looks blurry but it is still noticible. The x and y coordinates are: X Y

Hello, I can confirm one comet which is listed below.
Pavel, I can see your C3 claim but not with enough confidence to
call it a comet. I believe the 13:18 and 14:42 images are
not consistent in appearance with the last 4 images (15:18-16:42)
that are point-like and represent the best argument for a comet.
However, 4 point-like objects just above the background is hardly
enough evidence considering it's in C3 images. Therefore, I am
designating it a x-comet.
Christian, your first claim does not tell me what time your
positions represent. Also, do not tell us when you first id'd
your suspect comet...just the image times is important. Second,
based solely on the positions you give I can tell they are not
comets. The comets we observe move with known speeds throughout
the year, and your positions are way off. I am concerned that you
have not taken time to study past comets and to review the
information for new people on the "Found Something?" link. You
need to review this information if you are going to have any
success finding LASCO comets. Also, do not post a comet claim with
less than four positions until you are successful at finding new
comets. The reason is that new rules will be soon be put in place
that ban those people who submit false claims with less than 4
positions. Please email me with any questions.

Christian,
haven't you read the advise Derek has given? If not, please be
sure to read his red post!
Regarding your post: First I can not see how your coordinates fit
in an 256x256 image. Assuming that you have used 512x512 images
then the velocity is way to high for a comet and the direction
does not fit the Kreutz path for this time of year.
Again, try to obey Dereks advise.

Hello, I have reviewed all of the recent claims and I can only
confirm John's C3 comet.
Bo, welcome to SOHO/LASCO comet hunting. There is no real object
at the positions you give. In fact, I can only see noise (cosmic
rays) near your first two positions. Since you are new, please
review all of the information provided at the "Found Something?"
link on this page. This information is written specifically to
help new observers. It is difficult to explain to a beginner why
their claim is false until you begin to observe past comets so
that you can familiarize yourself with the typical speed,
appearance, and location of the comets we observe. Once you have
observed past comets you will understand why your object is not
a comet. Please email me with any questions. Good luck.
Dave, the object you are referring could never be distinguished
above noise and doesn't even move uniformly over the period in
question. As you know, there are limited resources available for
the comets so please do not waste this limited time on these types
of extremely faint archive claims which could never yield any
real scientific value, but only add to an already large dataset of
Kreutz comets. Last, please review the correlation between your
claims which use the phrase "requires high magnification" and the
resulting number of real comets confirmed. It will be near zero
and it's not a coincidence.

Please remember that SOHO is rolled by 180 degrees.
Therefore, stars and planets will move from right-to-left and the
expected position of our comets will rotate by 180. SOHO will
be rolled for probably a few months until it enters the next
"blackout" keyhole of its orbit (SOHO moves in a 6 month orbit
about the L1 Lagrangian point). The good news is that the expected
blackouts will be less dramatic than originally thought. You can
follow the status of SOHO through the "SOHO Home Page" and
"SDAC Home Page" links provided at left.
Please email me with any questions.

Bill,
please be sure to read the rules for posting possible comet
suspects. This means at least _four_ x and y positions in
_consecutive_ images. The suspect has to be _consistent in
shape and brightness_ and has to move in 90% of all cases on
known trajectories depending on the time of year.
If you had read the page from where you posted you would have
seen that often planets and stars mimic comets and that the
very bright object entering the C3 field of view is Venus (which
enters the FOV from right to left) by following the link
"C3 transits". I guess you meant Venus but without coordinates
no one can check anything.Be sure to follow the rules before
making another posting. Please direct questions and discussions
to the "sohohunter" yahoogroup mailing list.
Thank you and good luck, Maik |

John,
this is John Sachs' Kreutz comet, reported yesterday. Remember,
b/w images are flipped by 180 deg. The processed images are
oriented correctly. Your coordinates agree with John Sachs' comet
when multiplied by two and substracted from 1024.

Hello all,
Welcome back to the website and I apologize for the delay. If you
were not following the comet confirmations at the yahoo comet
group site then you missed three confirmations....
SOHO# Discoverer Dates Camera
=================================================
643 J. Sachs 03/07/18 C3
644 J. Sachs 03/07/20-21 C2,C3
645 X.-M. Zhou 03/07/24 C3
In addition, I can confirm another Kreutz comet claimed first
by M. Boschat, who reported this comet well ahead of John,
XingMing, and DongHua.

646 M. Boscaht 03/07/25-26 C3
I am waiting for more images to confirm/deny John's report of a
C3 comet in today's image. Mike, even if John's claim turns out
to be real, I believe a confirmation was premature considering:
(1) it's a C3 claim with only 4 positions, (2) it seems quite
displaced in the y-direction for a kreutz object at this time of
year, and (3) the object that is being claimed is very dim.
