Because people are continuing to post <4 position claims without
caution, I believe it's time to make a false report rule that will
blacklist those that continue to submit false reports. As some of
you know, I will be leaving in September and I can't imagine
subjecting the new person to thi mess (not even my worst enemy!).
Well, I will be out of office until June 20 and I will inform
everyone of these unfortunate rules (I hate rules!) when I return.
 The clock starts now...

Hi John,

welcome aboard! your claim is obviously noise. While you are
correctly giving the motion in x as constant, the motion in y
should also be constant, but is not. Additionally the shape of the
point changes, especially in the third image. Not obvious, but
something you will find out with more experience is that it moves
too fast for a typical SOHO comet and if expected to be a Kreutz
comet it is not on the track for this comet group.

I hope this helps and good luck, Maik |

The "possible" comet appears to be only visible

such a sun grazer comet can flare up and exist for
only an hour. But here are the photos and descriptions
 observed.

Hi, Tim--
What you have reported is two spots of noise
or cosmic-ray hits. Such spots will often mimic comets
in appearance. A true comet will remain fairly consistent
in appearance from one frame to the next (and not suddenly
appear and disappear in the middle of the field of view).
You should have at least four spots moving in a consistent direction and velocity. It's a good idea to check all
recent comet reports that have been confirmed (see Derek's
posts in red), look at the images and note the appearance
and velocity of the comets. If you have any questions
about SOHO comet hunting, feel free to bring them to
the Yahoo Sohohunter list at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sohohunter/

I looked at 1230 UT image but

I have received several emails today, the latest
only some minutes ago. So the adress seems to be ok.

My latest C2 comet is about 130 pixels to the right of
John's bright comet and about 36 pixels above it
 in the images 11:54 - 12:54.

How the heck can Tony confirm the Chinese find when I had to fight
getting only 2 XY's then another 2 from a B&W site! I put the post in first,
yeah 2 XY's but it was a comet and I was 100% sure after the 0242 UT B&W image,
The SOHO site still has the old one as I typoe this at 0142 UT ( blue color).

I hope this will be resolved!

Mike has showed me a cropped image indicating
the same object that I had been following
(which I had confirmed for XingMing; I had
checked Mike's coordinates but couldn't reconcile
them. ) I, too, hope there is a good answer.

To find Mikes objects do this:
1024 minus 777 then add his x coordinates and
1024 minus 460 then add his y coordinates to this.

My FINAL UPDATE on Comet in C3

My apologies to Tony Hoffman if my email & post
was "hard" sounding. Here 1230am and
a bit cranky as I did not have my warm milk yet.
The 0318 UT image just came in at 1 am so that
is all I'm doing in the way of updates.

Hello folks,

Well, I managed to finally look at all the claims. However, there
was still some unfinished business in regards to a couple claims
by T. Hoffman and P. Shkreby (bot visible in 5/31 images). I have
decided to make them both x-comets. Reasons include large time
gaps between images, a proton storm occurring throughout, and no
significant cometary appearance to distinguish from noise, in
addition to the fact that the objects are not visible in many
images. Also, Pavels' object suggests a medium bright Kreutz comet
which I usually can spot in half-res color filter images. However,
I saw nothing in the 2:54 image when the object was at its
brightest. I never deny a comet due to absence from these images
but it does cast doubt...all of these reasons compel me to call
 both x-comets.

The confirmations are below...NEWS FLASH...Rainer is not too bad
at finding comets! Congratulations on #100.

And on a sour note, most of you now know that SOHO is encountering
problems when trying to move its high gain antenna (HGA). The
result is that approximately 20 days out of every three months
the DSN will not have contact with SOHO via the HGA and therefore
no observations will be available. The first of these blackouts
will occur today or tomorrow...the LASCO doors have been shut
since Monday due to an EIT bakeout.

Please email me with any qustions or corrections to the above.

I just wondered if this possible Kreutz had been reported
before. I have looked through the Archive Reports for May 2003
but I cannot see it mentioned.

The object is easily visible so would be difficult to miss.

With the limited time I have available on the computer just now,
I may have over-looked the applicable report.

Hello, I can confirm the first of Dave's archive claims. I could
confidently see the second claim (5/19-5/20) in only 3 frames but
 it did show Kreutz-like properties...therefore it's an x-comet.
