Hi, Andrew--

Your coordinates suggest a motion that
would be much too fast for a comet in C3. There also
is a "hardness" to the points, while a comet would
be be more diffuse; what you've reported is noise,
perhaps cosmic-ray hits.

Tony Hoffman

Andrew,

what you have reported in your last posting is a star. Stars
move horizontally from left to right. Please try to make yourself
familiar with SOHO comets, how they look like and where they
appear by checking earliert findings: almost over 85% are moving
on Kreutz trajectories, 10% belong to the Meyer, Marsden and
Kracht groups and 5% are non-group comets. All the information
you need is contained on the report page (links to the
trajectories). A nice hunting tutorial can be found at
www.sungrazer.org and newbie questions are answered at the
yahoo "sohohunter" list.

Kind regards, Maik

P.S.: For future postings please also indicate the image size and
position of 0,0 mark.

Andrew,

my last posting was written in regard of your C2 claim. Now you
have posted another claim in C3. Again you have reported noise.
I strongly recommend to stop posting one claim after another and
try to really become familiar with SOHO comet hunting. Try to
follow the rules:
(1) predictable brightness behaviour (your claim does not)
(2) predictable movement (your claim does not)
movement in x per hour: 18, 3, -6
movement in y per hour: 18, 20, 32
No physical object moves like that!
(3) consistent shape (your claim does not)

You will always find chance alignments of noise. I again strongly
advise to check earlier findings.

Hello, I've had a look at the recent claims.

Obviously, Rainer's non-group comet is good and I agree that there
is a trailing fragment. The ruling on whether we consider this to
be a separate comet essentially belongs to Brian Marsden. In the
past such comets have been considered separate because the orbital
elements of each component can be used to compute the when and
where of the comet breakup. For now I will assume the separate
piece to be a comet. After all, if we didn't consider comet
fragments as separate entities, then there wouldn't be much
point in "discovering" any Kreutz comets.

Rob, your two reports are very dim. I was ready to declare the
first report an X-comet because I didn't believe your last
position. However, I found what I believe is the comet at 20:50.
Still unsure, I had a look at the polarized sequence that had
ideal timing and sure enough I saw the object at the right position
for all 4 of the half-res images. I don't believe the last
position for the 2nd comet but it I still belive it's real.

John, as you've declared, I do not see anything at your positions.

Andrew, the advice that Tony and Maik gave you is absolutely
correct. Also, and this applies to all new people, the comments
that the experienced people and myself give is not meant to
discourage anyone, we are really trying to help you. Ocassionally,
a message may seem blunt, but that is because I encourage everyone
to be concise with their messages...of course I'm not good at
following my own advice.

Rob, regarding your claim for an object beginning on May 5 at
17:26, I can only see it in three images but it does look real.
Therefore, I am designating it a SOHO x-comet.

Also, everyone has correctly realized the recent reports of Ceres
and Mercury. Please remember that if an object moves almost
exactly horizontal it is most likely a star, planet, or asteroid.
Check the "C3 Transits" list and any ephemeris program to identify
the object. Ken-ichi, by simply comparing the movement with
respect to other stars one can see your object is also a star...
check an ephemeris program to learn which one it is. Perhaps you
were fooled into believing it was something else because Ceres is
moving directly above your star at a slower rate.

Hi, Al--

Your positions would indicate a motion far too rapid
to be a comet in C3, and also a speed that varies widely.
Consider that in the hour between 1618 and 1718, the
Y-coordinate changed by 12 pixels, while in the next
24 minutes, it changed by 49. Some of the other positions
are even more wildly inconsistent (137 pixels change in Y
in the 24 minutes between 1818 and 1842). The points
themselves look like noise, not particularly cometary.
You would do well to study the reports of confirmed
comets to get acquainted with their appearance and motion.
Also, it's important to indicate at which corner the
0,0 point is located.

So why do you post if you know without having seen it on a second
image? Forgive me but I think this is nothing more than picking
something out without andy chance of knowing movement and - on
the
edge - even shape and hoping for a fluke.

Hello,

I can only confirm one comet...Rainer's claim from Friday.
However, as is my unwritten policy, if another report arrives
within a very close period of time (2 seconds here) and that
second report contains all the information I ask for in a report,
then dual credit is given. So, John also gets credit for this
comet.

Everyone, please act responsible when reporting comets...remember
that claims with less than 4 positions must be obvious comets and
you should be right 99% of the time (you're at 20% since my last
post!).

Regarding Xavier's and Mike's reports I can't confirm them. The

object can't be seen in previous images although it is bright
enough. The shape is also not consistent. These are again two
position posts which could have been avoided by checking
carefully. In this manner the 99% positive reports Derek is

remember, 512x512 b/w are HALF the resolution AND unprocessed.
It should be clearly visible in 1024x1024 but instead there is
nothing. Additionally the velocities are not consistent

Hello, just posting to confirm the recent claims.

XingMing, because you did not post at least one position in your
claim, there is unfortunately no way I can give you credit.
Perhaps the only rule that we have ever really instituted
says, 'We need to know the date, time, and position of the
object for at least one image', which has always existed at the
top of the "Found Something?" link. The next post containing at
least one position was Rainer's.

I have tried to confirm Heiner's claim but I was not successful.

In some images there is "something" but it is gone in the next
images and reappears in the next or the next after the next. The
points are so close to the noise of the images that I tend to
conclude that it is such. Additionally the coordinates given by
Heiner are not consistent, especially in y (5 pixels for the first
four hours, but 10 pixels for the following 3.5 hours). Maybe someone
else can double-check.

your latest report moves close to (10) Hygiea.

Concerning your first faint object: It cannot be an asteroid due
to movement in the wrong direction. It really seems to be a highly
inclined comet (estimted i~160).

2003 May 26 -- Haven't been able to confirm Heiner's second dim

object, but I can say that it isn't Hygeia. This dim asteroid
(m11.6) would be located well to the left of Heiner's coordinates,
in the vicinity of [104, 449] at 15:18 on 5/26. Can't convince
myself that I can see Hygeia here, however.

Possible Kreutz comet in C2

(1024 x 1024, 0,0 in upper left corner)

2003 May 30
0154 682,1023
0206 684,1016
0230 687,1001
0354 697,949
0430 702,926

Considering the noise and the gap in images, I felt this might
be a stretch, but then I tried calculating the velocity of an object
with these positions, and was surprised to get the following:

From 0206 to 0230, the x/y displacement is .125/.625 pix/m
From 0230 to 0354, it is .12/.62 pix/m
From 0354 to 0430, it is .14/.64 pix/m
(The 0206 position is iffy, at the very edge of the field, and the
short interval of time makes it statistically weak, but the displacement
between it and 0206 is .16/.58 pix/m)

I had meant to say, in the parentheses at the end of my previous post, that it was the 0154 position (rather than the 0206 one) that was iffy--sorry for the error.

not May 30 (sorry again). (I shouldn't post at 3 a.m. :-)
