LASCO images. All SOHO questions can be directed to :

However, if you have any LASCO/comet questions, a website has been
established at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sohohunter/ by
the persons who regularly post to this form. They are usually
quick to reply to anyone's LASCO/comet questions and are very
knowledgeable. If they don't know the answer exactly, they
typically are able to direct one to the location where the answers

Contrary to Mike B's comment I cannot confirm any of the reported
comets by Xingming.
The first one doesn't appear in 1024 images of 23:26 and 00:26,
the others 2 images only show streaks with different shape and
brightness.

The comet was orbiting jupiter. It was a large streak that was a blue-ish color. even though it was smaller than jupiter its appearance was larger than usual do to it probably breaking from its orbit. I looked at charts on were the listed comets should be and didn't find a comet orbiting jupiter during the spring season. |

SOHO/LASCO images. All other reports should be sent directly to
the CBAT. See their requirements before you send them a message...

this is SOHO 596 = C/2003 G3 (SOHO).

this is noise. First, the speed is not consistent. Just calculate
the incremental velocities in x and y between the images. They
are not constant, but should be if real. Second, don't post if
you are not sure or even think that it could be debris or noise.

Congrats, Rainer, on your non-group find! Maik wondered if it
might be related to my (questionable) C3 post of yesterday. Now
that preceding C3 frames are available, I don't see anything
above noise-level at the extrapolated positions, so I would
consider my claim doubtful at best.
At first I was excited by the timing and general direction of
Rainer's find in C2, but a few "back of the envelope" calculations
show that Rainer's comet comes earlier than mine would have in C2
at his positions, and the track of mine would have been well left
of Rainer's. An amusing coincidence, but I don't think there's
anything more to it than that. --Rob |
