Hello, I can only confirm Xavier's comet that was visible

in Feb 28, C3 images.  This is SOHO588. 



Dave, I can see the points you claim w/o magnification.  However,

they are among the background and it impossible to determine if its

real, especially since the points only exist in a few images.

Remember, four points is the minimum.  This doesn't 

necessarily mean that if you find 4 points that have realistic

cometary velocities, we have to declare it a comet. The 

claimed object must exhibit convincing evidence that it is real

and your points definitely do not. It's quite an effort you're 

giving but I think you are looking too deep into the noise.

I would try to keep your searches to at least 1-2 sigma above the

background.

I, too, can confirm Dave's comet find in C3 -- surprised I

missed it earlier given how close it was to the object I

reported (which is on a parallel track, just slightly to

the upper left of Dave's).  --Rob

Hi, I too can confirm Dave's Kreutz comet in C3.  This is SOHO589.



Rob, I see only cosmic rays and background noise at your positions.



Mark, in every image you will see streaks that are caused by

cosmic rays striking the detector. Please read my comments in my

post of March 3 14:10 becuase it provides useful information for 

beginners. If you are interested in SOHO comet hunting, the only

way to find them is by studying the position, appearance, and

speed of past comets and to make use of the chat site and 

tutorials described in my previous post. Good luck.

Mr. Sachs' C3 comet is SOHO591. Tony, if you subtract 100 from

John's y-position you get the same coordinates. John, for future

reference, it perhaps would have been easier to say (0,100) is

in the top left corner, but that's up to you. A few preliminary

I see an object inbound from the C3 images along the lens obscura post over the frames from 2003/03/20 from around 0600GST through 3003/03/21 0900GST, whereupon, it impacts the solar disk!  What do you make of it?

Hello everyone,



Usuki Ken-ichi, your peers have given you correct information.

Your claim refers to SOHO592 which had been claimed originally

on March 19 by M. Oates and confirmed by myself on March 20. Also,

for future posts, please tell me where (0,0) is in your 

coordinate system. Good luck.



Donn, first, I do not know what object you are definitely

referring to but I'm guessing its SOHO592, reported by M. Oates.

Please give at least a few positions so I can identify what you

are looking at. Second, LASCO does not image the solar surface.

In fact, it is a coronagraph which, by definition, suggests it

only images the solar corona. It does this by completely occulting

the solar disk (the occulter is a few solar radii larger than the

actual solar disk). So, you could not have observed anything

impacting the solar surface.  If you are referring to comet

SOHO592, then I observed this object to disintegrate in the C2 FOV

at about 3 UT on March 21. This was at about 5 solar radii in

apparent distance, but its true distance would have been around

6 solar radii.  Remember, LASCO observations are made in the 

plane-of-sky, so unless the comet's orbit is exactly perpendicular

the the SOHO-Sun vector, we are not seeing its "true" distance.

Hope that helped.



Jeff, the object you claim is Mercury. A list of expected

planetary transits is given at the link, 'C3 Transits'. If the

planet has an apparent declination of ~ +/- 8 solar radii then 

expect it to also enter the C2 field of view. Planets will always

move, almost exactly horizontal, from either left-to-right or 

right-to-left. Stars move almost exactly horizontal from 

left-to-right.  Should you see any suspect object exhibit such

horizonal movement, you can be 99.9% sure its a planet or star.

Stars, planets, cosmic rays, and debris are often mistaken for

comets by everyone when they first start, so we provide examples

of these objects on the report page ("Found Something?"). There is

a website for beginners to ask questions and pick up tips from the

more experienced SOHO comet hunters at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sohohunter/.  Also, S. Hoenig has

provided a tutorial on hunting for SOHO comets at:

http://www.sungrazer.org. Also, the best chances for discovering a

SOHO comet is study the appearance, speed, and position of past

comets.  This should get you going in the right direction.



Xavier, perhaps you are not setting a good example for the

beginners by making a C3 claim with only 3 positions using B&W's,

with some images deviated by as much as 2-1/2 hours. We all know

you are exceptional at finding SOHO comets but nobody is that good!

Xavier's recent Kreutz claim, visible in both C2 & C3, is SOHO593.



And a warning to everyone, by the end of this month this website

will be changed to a new address. Hopefully I will be able to have

this NASA site forward everyone to the new site (NRL), but I am

not sure this is possible as of yet. I will give more details in

the coming days.

It was approx. 12:49 a.m. on thursday, march 27th when I spotted the comet, in Lafayette, Indiana.  It apparently came down at an angle towards the ground and actually crashed into the neighborhood on left side of s. 18th street past the railroad tracks.  it looked exactly like a comet and when it crashed there was an extremely bright white light that filled the sky.  I'm definately sure it was a comet or it must have been some sort of meteor.  Anyway...do i get to name this thing if i reported it first?  I hope it didn't crash into anyone's house or anything...From the look of it, it seemed like that crash could have done some serious damage.

what you have seen was a fireball. A fireball is nothing else

than just a very bright meteor. Comets are different. Comets

move slowly day by day and bright ones can be seen for weeks,

months or even years!



Besides, this board is for reporting comets found in the data 

of the SOHO spacecraft and not in the night sky. If you still 

think you have discovered a comet the look at

which is then the right place to go.
