I was watching the LASCOC3 images covering the last several days.
A small bright spot appeared in the lower left corner around 15:00
on 02/08/03. It moved quickly toward the sun, and I think it
developed a tail near 12:00 on 02/09/03. The spot appeared to
evaporate around 18:00 on 02/09/03! Has this been confirmed as a
new sungrazer? How cool!
Is it at all unusual to have so many comets fly so near the sun,
even into the sun, in such a small span of time? In just a few
weeks of each other, three comets will pass close to the sun, and
for all I know there have even been more than three.
Thank you,
Jeff Koehler

Hi, Jeff--
Yes, that was a real sungrazing comet, first reported by David
Evans on February 09, 2003 11:29:26. If you want to hunt for
comets, you should learn to measure coordinates so you can check
against reports yourself. We have a discussion group at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sohohunter/ that you can go to with
any questions.
To date, 584 SOHO comets have been found, going back to January
1996; that averages to one every 4.3 days. Most of them are quite
faint, but occasionally a few bright ones will be seen in succession.

Tony Hoffman |

Hello, there are 2 more Kreutz comets to cofirm...one extremely
bright (SOHO 584) and one extremely dim (SOHO585).
SOHO# Discoverer Date Camera
------------------------------------------
584 D. Evans 03/02/08-09 C2,C3
585 R. Kracht 03/02/10 C3
We have made initial plans to observe C/2002 V1 (NEAT).
One problem is that if the comet does indeed reach the C3 FOV at
the predicted magnitude [~0 initially, ~-1 at perihelion], we are
not going to have any unsaturated images in the clear filter. The
reason is that there is a minimum of ~3 seconds for the exposure,
which is too long for this comet. However, we are discussing the
possibility of manually operating the shutter which allows us to
take much shorter exposures. So, if V1 enters C3 at the predicted
magnitude on Sunday do not expect to see many clear filter images.
We'll probably replace them with orange filter observations. Also,
we're toying with the idea of ocassionally adding an H-alpha
filter image. This is all in addition to short & long red and blue
filter images once per hour (tail observations). Within hours of
perihelion, we're dumping the long exposures, and will take color
sequences using all the filters for photometrty purposes. Of
course, at least once per hour, we'll have the typical 20 second
exposure, C3 image. Too much info? Just thought I would prepare
everyone.

I stumbled upon a new comet while downloading images for an animation of SOHO C3 images from Comet X5 transit thru Comet V1 transit. While animating these images in my screensaver I noticed another comet. I quickly sent an e-mail to xxx@xxx on Feb. 10th to report this. I have not heard anything and have not seen anything posted on this comet. It is not comet X5 or V1 or SOHO B1. It is visible in SOHO C3 images 20030208_0942 thru 20030209_1818. I'm sorry I have not found anywhere yet to explain the x,y pixel co-ordinates used to report these, but this comet comes in from the left at about the 8:00 position and heads straight into the sun.

what you have reported is a mix of noise and a star. Your first
three positions are just a chance alignment of noise and the
fourth position is the star coming from the left.
Donn,
this is C/2002 V1 (NEAT) a widely ground-based observed comet
since November 2002.

Hi,
I was just looking at the C3 sequences of C/2002 V1 for my astronomy class, when I noticed a sungrazer going in. It's
visible on 22 frames on the current C3 java sequence, and would
have been visible previous to this. I'm sure other people have spotted it, but thought I would report it any way. The
output from the Java position tool is below. This is much
easier than our astrometry software for our asteroid searches!

I have not had a chance to confirm any sungrazer reports since
my last red post, although it looks like John's claim was
confirmed by a few people. The reason is that a rather severe
snow storm has crippled most of the city for the past few days,
preventing me from going to work. It has also prevented us
from altering any of the C/2002 V1 comet observing sequence. So
if the short exposures are saturated we're out of luck until
tomorrow. Well, it has certainly gained much attention from
several amateurs based on reports to this page...that's always
nice to see. I do thank the more experienced SOHO comet hunters
for responding quickly to some of the claims that have been made.
Well, hopefully that CME on the solar north-west limb from
earlier today will strike the comet...that's something that has
certainly never been imaged before. By the way, this comet is by
far the brightest comet SOHO has observed. It should reach a
magnitude of ~ -2 .....the previous record holder was the Macholz
comet from January, 2002 which peaked at about -0.5...Hyakutake
peaked at about 1. |

Michael Boschat,
If you have 0,460 in lower left corner, What do you have in the
upper right corner? 1024,-564?
Debbie Kinloch,
I recently had the same problem of not knowing how to report in
coordinates. You can download XnView freeware at http://www.xnview.com/
Once you get it and install it, goto View and select Display Color Information.
Your cursor will turn into an eyedropper and a small box next to
it will display the x,y coordinates for the pixel you're on. Or
in my case I already had Adobe Photoshop 4.0 but was not aware
of a feature. Under Window, select Show Info and a box will
display x,y coordinates and color info for the pixel you're on.
I prefer the cursor on Adobe, if for your tools you select
Line Tool then you get a nice small cross-hair instead of an
eyedropper.
It would be helpful if this help would be provided on this webpage
for people like you and I.

Hi Debbie and Carey,
...and anyone new to Soho comets.
Discussions of the kind you raise should not be posted to the
Finders Page... This page is purely for reports of possible
discoveries only! Having to sift through general discussions to
get to the actual reports not only makes Derek's job more
difficult but also prevents fast access by observers to see if
anyone else has previously posted a similar claim.
Sometimes a comment or two is justified on this page, if highly
topical concerning a current claim for instance, but in general
all other comments should be posted to the sohohunter club site
message board. This can be found at -
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sohohunter/
Indeed, much information can be found at the club site and
perhaps you would both like to actively participate and also
contribute to its discussions. Anyone new to soho comets will
find help there in abundance. All are made welcome... Indeed
anyone with even the slightest interest in soho comets would
benefit if they took a few moments to follow the above link
and join.
Kindest regards to you both and best wishes with your searches,
- Dave

Hello, that was an impressive showing from C/2002 V1 (NEAT). There
are several interesting events that occurred throughout its path
so I am looking forward to the data analysis. However, I have not
forgotten about the sungrazers. Obviously, John Sachs comet
from Feb 16 in C3 is real, and should make a decent movie as
it was visible during NEAT. This is SOHO 587. I have not looked
at John's most recent claim...I usually wait until at least 10
images are in before I decide on a C3 comet. All other claims
have been checked and were not confirmed.
Dave, I still owe you an explanation for why I decided against a C3

John, this is possibly noise...
I can see something faint at the positions quoted but based on
your measurements, the difference in the x's and the y's, in
pixels per hour shown in brackets, suggest that the movement is
not constant.
12:18 to 12:42 (24 minutes) x = 4 (10.0), y = -2 (- 5.0)
11:42 to 12:18 (36 minutes) x = 4 ( 6.7), y = -4 (- 6.7)
11:18 to 11:42 (24 minutes) x = 5 (12.5), y = -4 (-10.0)

Hello,
Bruce, to make a comet claim you need to send me the x & y pixel
positions of your suspect object in at least 4 consecutive images.
This info is listed in the "Found Something?" section along with
some other info regarding typical mistakes that beginners make
when claiming a comet. Please have a look.
Konarch, this page is for comets found in SOHO images only.
