I do hope Derek will forgive me for using the Finders Page for
making a quick announcement to anyone who wishes to make a
real-time discovery - 'newbies' in particular.

Anyone new to this group will soon realise that the majority of
real-time C2/C3 discoveries are not made using the colour gifs
(1024x1024) but rather by viewing the Lasco B/W images (512x512)
which are often as much as 1 - 2 hours ahead of the gifs.

Indeed, many 'newbies' have begun to enquire about the Lasco B/W
images, where they can be found and how to download them. This
set me thinking about how much at a disadvantage newbies appear
to be when compared to the more expert observers within the SOHO
community, who are obviously more 'in-the-know'.

Anyone interested in viewing the Lasco B/W images may like to
take a look at http://www.dvso.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/bw-lasco.htm
- a web page I have designed especially for real-time discovery
enthusiasts, which - most importantly - should be viewed using
a screen resolution of 1280x1024 minimum!

Hopefully, the above web page should help to reduce the gap
which exists between novice and expert in the real-time detection
of SOHO comets. On this single page can be found the most recent
Fiders-Page comments, the 'official' form to report a new comet,
the latest Lasco C2 & C3 B/W images (which in I.E. can be saved
to disk by right-clicking on them and selecting 'Save Picture
As'), the image schedule list and the contact schedule for
communication with the SOHO spacecraft - and any or all can be
refreshed at any time. I have also included a live chat room
too! So, hopefully, newbies will now find it easy to view and
download the B/W images, and chat and learn from each other all
at the same time.

I humbly offer this as a small but hopefully useful Christmas
present all within the SOHO community... :o)

Kindest wishes for this special time of year!

- Dave

Maciej,

first, stars have almost constant y-coordinates, which your
claim does not have. Second, if you calculate the speed between
the images in x and y, you'll see that it changes: for x from 17.5
pixels/hour to 35 pixels/hour and in y from 7.5 pixels/hour to
25 pixels/hour. No real object changes its speed. Comets are
almost constant between consecutive images. So, it is noise.
Additionally it does not move on the trajectory of a known comet
group - so it is very risky to identify a faint spot in the
b/w images as a comet.

Dave, your last claim for an archive comet C2 from 2002/05/18

appears to be noise. I can see the first point, but no others.
What really gives this away, is that your first position is long
way in from the edge, so where are the comet images in previous
images?

Beware - Looking at images in high contrast also brings out the
noise.

Thanks to both Maciej and Sebastian for their comments.

Sebastian writes that my 09:30 position (see my last
post) is probably the star Tycho-2 star 682900177, but
if one looks closely at this image one will notice two
objects fairly close to each other. One of these (not the
"star" mentioned above), which is close to the sun, has the following position: 344, 913. I didn't think that this had anything to do with my initial report, but who knows? Am I way off line here?

Best,
Mark

Mark,

your report is just a combination if noise hardly
above the background level plus a star. The position
you mentioned in your last report also refers to
a star - Tycho-2 682900107 (V=9.24). By the way:
Giving a "?" as position is not necessary. When
a position is undeterminable the object doesn't
exist at this position.

Andrew,

your object is just noise and is situated at none
of the known comet group tracks.

As a newby you may first look at recently discovered
comets to learn where comets appear and how they look
like - perhaps following the Guide to comet discovery.
However, never report an object that is visible in
only two 512 C3 images far away from the Kreutz track (see the rules on the report page).

Hi all,

Another bright comet is heading for C3: C/2002 X5 (Kudo)
will be visible around Jan 25, 2003. Current estiimations
place it at 7.5mag - that means possibly -3mag around

Minor update... Possible faint comet in C3 - 2002/12/15

Lasco B/W images. 512x512. 0,0 Top-Left

Rectifying a slight error on the first position given.

07:42 207, 356

This is a difficult object due to its close proximity to the
occulting arm and the high profusion of noise already exhibited
there. Also the absence of any white pixels in the object casts
a further doubt regarding its reality.

Awaiting the colour gifs to arrive...

Update to my report of Dec 15 2002 11:59:40

Nothing substantial found at the locations quoted for the
corresponding C3 gifs... Please disregard.

With the position of the occulting arm now overlaping the
December Kreutz paths, the high noise level could possibly make
faint C3 finds very difficult indeed for the next few weeks. A
time to concentrate more on C2 perhaps?

Christmas wishes to everyone, - just 10 days to go! :o)

Please be sure to check your speeds before posting. Several false
reports could have been avoided by using this very simple check.
And I think I've heard this somewhere before(!)...please do not
post <4 position reports unless it extremely bright and obvious.
We've had over 50 reports since I last posted and there were only
three comets to show for it...that's not so good.

It looks like UVCS, and possibly SUMER and CDS, are planning to
observe C/2002 X5 (Kudo-Fujikawa) when it arrives in late January.
So hopefully it will put on a good show.

Finally, happy holidays to everyone. I will be away for the next
1-1/2 weeks so take it easy, relax, spend time with the family,
comets can wait until I return! Just kidding, good luck and when I
return I will have lots of time to catch up so things should begin
to look normal again in January.

OK, corrections are in order. First, a typo exists in the last

table...SOHO574 is Sebastian's comet. I have also decided to
give Xavier and Mike dual credit for SOHO573 considering the
close timing of their reports (1 sec) and that time was taken to
correctly include all the pertinent information. If Mike had
sent a "comet in C2, positions next post" comment with no
mention of the other images, date, etc., I would not have give
dual credit. It pays to be pedantic.

2002 December 19th -- have a possible Meyer group comet in

real-time C2. Difficult to be confident given the large time separation between frames. Here are the four points I've got
so far (1024x1024 coordinates with 0,0 in upper left):

earlier, so it may not have been visible (I'm still
checking). --Rob

Hi, I think I may have discovered an SOHO comet. The object looks like a faint smudge when I first located it. I dont know if it is a comet. But I think it looks like one. I found the comet at 5:55 P.M. U.T., the (possible) comet is located at (the center left edge from the picture of the sun). In the image of 2002/12/15 00:18 it looks like a smudge of light. I can see the object moving eastward towoard the sun in these images: 2002/12/15 00:18, 2002/12/15 01:42, 2002/12/15 02:18, 2002/12/15 03:18, and 2002/12/15 05:18. When you check all of the images e-mail me back and tell me if I may have found a comet. Bye.

Rob,

I have checked your positions and must say while the velocities
seem quite reasonable (for a Meyer group comet at this time of
the year) there is quite a change of morphology and brightness in
the last four images where I would expect to see these more
stable. I'm inclined for a no.

Christian,

without giving positions it is hard to find the object you mean
since there are A LOT of difuuse objects in every image. Most
SOHO comets look starlike and not diffuse, so you should try to
check known SOHO comets first. Additionally it is not on a
trajectory of a known comet group - you should inform yourself
about these on the report form page.

Maik

xxx@xxx
Christian,

the object you have detected is M8, a nebula. The Sun is currently
going through the Milky Way where a lot of nebulae and star
clusters mimicking comets. A check with a star chart will show
you this.

C2 Meyer candidate update: not sure if one more data point

significantly improves my case, but there is an exceedance
in the next earlier frame (13:31) at the expected location,
bringing the total # of points to 8:

YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM Col Row dX dY
---------- ----- --- --- --- ---
2002-12-19 13:31 452 228
14:06 474 194 .63 -.97

16:20 564 71 .67 -.89

I agree that the brightness/morphology is not very consistent
over these 4 hours, but the two frames closest together in
time (15:50, 16:02) look very much alike, and the following
frame at 16:20 is pretty close in appearance. Indeed, these
were the three images that initially caught my eye. --Rob

Merry christmas to all out there.

I looked at all recent claims and couldn't confirm
any. Except Rob's report all others can be ruled out
when looking at the relative velocities.
Rob, your claim should have been visible in at least
one previous image but it wasn't. Also, at this time
of December SOHO comets appear at much higher y-values
with x around 20 (see Mike Oates, Dec 25 2000).

A general note: C2 now becomes unfavourable for
Kreutz comets. No only-C2 comet had been found after
Dec 25 the last years.
