Dear Sirs;
There is a comet seen in many frames of Image 4 (and 5)
in the article "Sun Puts on a Show for Fall", in the 01 November
2002 GSFC Website. The comet enters the field of view around time
09:18 on 2002/10/27, at about -60 degrees (lower right quadrant),
and falls into the sun, last seen at 23:42.
Can I name this comet? >smile<

Sergey, this is definitely not a comet. If you look at your
positions, you claim the object moves in +x direction, then
turns back in the -x direction in the time span of one hour.
Comets will not exhibit such movement. The comets that SOHO
observes will have velocities that that do not change
significantly on the time scale of hours (i.e. the pixels/hr in
both the x and y direction will be fairly consistent on the
time-scale of hours. And typically the velocity remains
consistent throughout all observations). Also, under "Found
Something?" entitled 'Where should I look in the images to find
comets?', you will find the paths where over 95% of the comets we
discover are located. I suggest that, as a newbie, you
concentrate on Kreutz comets because they are the "easiest" to
find. You will only find comets when you know where they are,
what they look like and how they move. Familiarize yourself with
the typical appearance and movement of SOHO comets by trying to
find past comets. And please be patient. It takes
people weeks or months to find their first comet so be skeptical
of the objects you think could be comets. Ask yourself, is the
movement and appearance consisent? Thanks and good luck.
To everyone, I am trying to sift through all the recent claims
so please be patient, it could take a long time...years!

Hi Kiyoto
The sungrazer in your report is actually the same comet found by
Rainer Kracht on Oct 26 2002 17:44:39.
This comet first became visible in the C3 images and later
entered the C2 field of view on Oct 28 2002 04:06.
Bright C2 objects of this nature are usually always discovered
first in the C3 images - perhaps up to 35hours before.
So when checking to see if a bright C2 comet has previously been
found, it is always a good idea to first check the reports of C3 discoveries for the previous two days.
Hope this helps...

I am still reviewing Rob's claim on Nov 2.
Just a reminder for some of the "experienced" people. I require 4
positions unless the object is obvious...NOT DIM or FAINT. I
understand if an occasional false report occurs. But some people
submitted a handful of <4 position reports (in just 1 week) and all were
false! Since I have mentioned the "obvious rule" maybe a few
thousand times already, the only explanation is that you do not
care. Thanks alot.
For the new people, and I see there are quite a few, please do not
report a comet with fewer than 4 positions until you gain some
experience. After all, you really don't know what "obvious" means
yet. And do not worry about your previous false posts, it is
understood that it happens to everyone in the beginning. I just
ask that you make improvements as time progresses.
Email me if you would like to know why your claim was rejected.

0054 551,950 +6, -19 --> .21, -.66

Ciro,
what you spotted is an alignment of noise. Some reasons:
(1)The object is not present at the 09:06 image. Comets must be
visible in all consecutive images. Also, a comet with such a
brightness should be visisble much earlier
(2)This is not the direction of a sungrazer for this time of
year. In general "sungrazer" is a reserved word for Kreutz
comets. At http://www.ph.u-net.com/comets/c2paths.htm you can
see where they are visible at each time of year.
(3)Normally comets are not seen that close to the disc due to
variable reason.
For more information please read (and use) Derek's red posts on
this page.

The fact that I did wait for the follow up image can be verified
in the time of the claim. I beat you fairly Im afraid.
Actually I have been working hard on my image aquisition and
reporting speed. The method is now being used by my good friend
John Sachs and myself. With this method it is possible to report
a visually confirmed find of an obvious comet within only 30
seconds of receiving the second image from when it is posted to
the net! Im sure Derek will not mind one bit about the reporting
speed for this comet.
First one to see and report the find gets the credit I believe
and my report was posted 9 minutes before yours.
Better luck next time...

Hello, I have looked at all claims since my last post. First, I
took another look at Rob's claim of a comet in Nov 2, 2002 C2
images. I have decided to not accept this claim. I simply do not
believe the 4th point and there is nothing obvious about the first
three to warrant an X-comet status.
As for the rest, I have accepted three comets...
SOHO# Reporter Date Camera
-------------------------------------
539 D. Evans 02/11/09 C2,C3?
540 R. Kracht 02/11/09 C2
541 R. Kracht 00/04/10 C2,C3
? - I am waiting for the C3 data gap to fill in.
Among the other reports...
-Rob, your Nov 6 21:50:16 claim is indeed 2P/Encke. I actually
sent CBAT these Encke positions when it was first visible.
However, because...
(1)LASCO resolution is considered poor (for comets), and
(2)LASCO sees only a small fraction of a comet's orbit,
...Brian Marsden found our measurements to be unhelpful.
In fact, orbital solutions are possible for SOHO comets only
because they belong to a group whose orbital elements are well
established. I would guess that there are several possible solutions
for our non-group comets, although I really don't know the
statistics off hand.
-Rainer, your C3 positions reported on Nov 7 10:24:11 are
indeed SOHO-101 (C/2000 C4). Good find.
-Ciro, your Nov 9 13:17:24 claim is not real based on the speed
of the positions. If you look at the change in x between
14:42-15:42 & 15:18-16:18, you will see the speeds are not
consistent.
-Gregg, your claim is not real. I do not see anything at your
positions except background noise. Also, the speeds are somewhat
inconsistent between images.
-Chris, that is SOHO-422 (C/2002 G3). This comet does not belong
to any known group, so it can be found on the "Other" page.

Ciro, a claim which may be noise should not be posted
with only two positions which indicate that the
presumed comet is not even a member of a known group.
Links to the tracks of the known groups are at:

I think it is noise and you will find nothing in

Concerning the last two reports: I cannot confirm
bobth of them.
Sergey, your object`s motion is not consistant.
Look at the x and y positions: x slows down and
the last y position would mean an enormous
acceleration. All of this is something a real object
would not do.

Hi Sebastian,
Thank you for responding so fast. I have uploaded an animation
of the claim to the Yahoo sohohunter clubsite in the Photo
section and it shows the movement of the Kreutz comet quite well.
This is a very faint and difficult find.... Hope this helps.

Okay, I've had a look at all the recent claims. For now, I can
definitely confirm XingMing's claim in C2. I'm still debating as
to whether I see it in C3 however. Very rough positions below.
Toni, your claim is just random noise and even then the speeds
vary erratically between some images.
Sergey, I saw nothing above the noise level at your positions.
I still want to take another look at the faint C2 claims from Rob
and Dave before I make a decision. I find it's always best to look
at these extraordinary faint claims over the span of a few days.
By the way, Dave, I saw your movie on the yahoo chat site. I think
you may have picked up some noise from the gif processing as the
fits images do not reveal the two flanking anomalies shown in
every frame of your movie. I only see this structure in the 9:30
frame of the fits images. Nevertheless, I do see something near
the positions you give. Those gifs can be deceiving!

2002 Nov 20 -- UPDATE on the possible Kreutz fragment that I
reported earlier leading Sebastian's C3 comet. Now that more
1024x1024 frames are available, I have my doubts that it was
real. While something dim appears to lead the comet in 5 out
of 6 frames, it isn't bright enough to inspire much confidence. Furthermore, it doesn't show up in C2. But for completeness, here's what I have:
Hoenig's 2nd frag

Hello, the comet frenzy appears to continue. I have made decisions
on all claims. The results are below...
SOHO# Reported By Date Camera

Rob, your C3 positions for SOHO-546 do not match the trajectory
of the C2 positions. Looks like it was noise. Also, as you've
probably guessed, the C3 positions for your claim (SOHO-550) do
not match your C2 positions...plus I really didn't see much
at the positions anyway.
Dave, I looked at your pending claim with several processing
methods. Some looked better than others but, in the grand scheme,
none convinced me. Each processing method agrees on the same
coordinates for your object but they usually differed from the ones
you provided...albeit not by much. However, the deviation was
significant enough to suggest an inconsistent change in the
y-coordinate. It appears to be noise.
If anyone has questions or comments, please email me.

Faint objects should be reported only in 1024 images as

Just look at your coordinates and the times. This does not move

your report is definitely no comet. The positions
you gave change direction in an erroneous way.
Please start comethunting with trying to locate
known comets to see _where_ comets can be seen,
_how_ they move and how the look like. You may
also use the tutorial that is offered.

Hello, I have two more confirmations and a pending claim...
SOHO# Reported By Date Camera
------------------------------------------
552 X.-M. Zhou 02/11/25 C2
553 X. Leprette 02/11/24 C2
554? R. Matson 02/11/24 C2 [PENDING]
Gregg, your claim was reasonable...meaning I did see the object
you were referring to. However, after taking my own positions, the
change in x is suspect, especially at the 23:18 image. Also, the
object you are referring to is very dim and, if you take another
look in its vicinity, you'll see there always exists at least 2-4
other blobs or smudges that look identical to it. This is
an immediate signal that you're looking too far into the noise.
Also, your y-coordinate seems to be consistently short by 4-5
pixels. Please fix this for future reports as it is very difficult
to ascertain the exact object you're claiming especially if it's
very faint. Overall, your claim is just background noise.
And for everyone, once again, do not post with <4 positions if the object
is not obvious. Please stop. Sergey and Ciro, please do not make
<4 posts until you are more comfortable with comet appearances in
LASCO. Dave, it's absurd to think that you could, with 1 or 2
images!!, possibly identify a comet in C3!!, with the black and
whites!!, with 1/2 resolution!!. Nobody is that good. A successful
claim would be nothing more than a guess. Guesses are not acceptable
with <4 image posts.

Robert,
your object can be identified as a random alignment of cosmic ray
hits. Reasons:
(1) It changes shape and brightness unphysically (i.e. unpredictable)
(2) It is not visible in previous or following images although
it should with that brightness characteristics
(3) The x-movement doesn't correspond to the time steps
Another hint is that it is not on the track of one of the known
groups. For beginners it is best to first search only for Kreutz
comets (see http://www.ph.u-net.com/comets/c2paths.htm)
Regards, Sebastian |
