I can't confirm Toni's report without even looking at it. Again

the velocities (in this case especially in x) are not consistent.
Please, since this is the easiest thing to do: Calculate the
velocities in x and y before posting a claim.

Hello, I am able to confirm X. Leprette's claim of a Meyer-group

comet in C2, October 4 images. I did not see anything in C3 that
I could definitively say is this comet, especially with the
large amount of CME activity occurring in this region. This
discovery is SOHO527. All claims have been checked.

Also, you'll notice the newest MPEC(T25) contains an error. I've already alerted Brian that the reporter of C/2002 S7 was R. Matson, not R. Kracht. It was a Kracht-group comet which perhaps
may have led to the confusion.

Pat,

your object moves not uniformly to be real. If real the relative
speeds between successive image are expected to be almost constant.
If you calculate the velocities between each image in x and y you
will see that these are by no means constant. Although your object
moves not on a Kreutz trajectory and non-Kreutz comets and the
comets of other groups have been observed to change velocity and
direction this happens not on such a short timescale to such extent.
So, without even looking at the actual images I can say that it is
noise. Hope this helps.

Possible comet asteroid?

0142 431, 203

1042 443, 205

This object seemed to be in every frame for 10/17 and moved steadily. It did not seem bright enough for a planet, so perhaps an asteroid?

Could someone answer two questions I didn't see on this web site?
1) Where is a good online empheris that will show asteroids and known comets? I have a basic planetarium program that shows stars and planets, but not smaller objects.

2) How wide is the LASCO C3 field? This will help me verify items in the emphemeris!

Thank you,
Daniel Cornwall

Daniel,

I am not sure if there is really something. The 1024x1024 are
also not conclusive. Are you sure your positions (date, 0,0, etc)
are correct? However, there is a minor planet near the
indicated positions: 16 Psyche. But it should be at 11m6 - too
faint for C3. The answers to your questions:

1) You can check for known asteroids and comets with the MPChecker
at http://scully.harvard.edu/~cgi/CheckMP
2) The C3 FOV is about 8 degrees radius.
A list of C3 asteroid transits is posted at the sungrazer homepage.

Kind regards, Maik

I have noticed that your x positions are coincident with the star
SAO 139235 (9m1) but your y-positions are systematically off by
+6 pixels (I guess you use the Java tool to measure positions).
Maybe you are referring to this star.

Rainer, Wonderful :) Lets hope this now gets accepted.

Just for the record I show here my original report for this find
which is pre-web reporting and was made by email on 28 June 2000

---------------------------------------------------------------
Doug,

Archive sungrazer in C2 images from 24 June 1999

This is only in 3 images, it may be visible in a fourth,
but is very faint, it is missing from a 5th due to a bad
data block.

I found this yesterday, but thought I would leave it till
you got back just in case you don't think it is a comet,
I did not want to upset the numbering.

Hello, I can confirm 3 more comets. I have only made decisions on

reports up to and including Rainers' Oct 20 2002 11:36:37 claim.

I hope Rainer will not be too upset but I have given credit for
the 99/06/24 comet solely to M. Oates becaue he originally
reported this object in C2. The object showed characteristics
of a Kreutz comet but was visible in only three C2 images,
therefore it was deemed a SOHO X-comet. Now, Doug and I have
always checked each camera for every comet, but what can I say, we
stunk on this one! The comet was fairly obvious in C3 images.

531 M. Oates 99/06/24 C2, C3!

*Haven't checked both cameras.

By the way, I will be gone for the next week so there will be no
new MPECs or confirmations during this time.

I have measured positions for the C3 comet I have found yesterday

with 512 pixels and 0,0 in upper left and compared them with Mike's:

Date and UT Mike XY's my pos. diff.
20021026_2318 418, 393 417,423 +1,-30
20021026_2342 416, 390 415,421 +1,-31
20021027_0018 413, 388 413,419 0,-31
20021027_0042 411, 386 411,417 0,-31

They agree very well if Mike has 0,31 in upper left
(and with 0,460 in lower left his images are 430 pixels high)

The comet looked double in b/w 512 images at 2118 and 2142
but I couldn't see this in 1024 images.

C3 comet looks double "nuclei" at
1642 UT to 1742 UT images Oct.27 in

1642 = 347, 322
1718 = 345, 319

I am at home and using modem take too
long download 1024 pixel. I used Photoshop
and reversed the images to black on white
and enlarged them looping manually it
looks like a "double comet". If not
how does pixels combine to make such looking

The comet you reported is the one that was first reported by
Rainer Kracht Oct 26 2002 17:44:39. Two basic things:
(1) Always give (x,y) positions for an object you believe to be
a comet. Otherwise nobody can check it and knows what exactly
you think of.
(2) Always check whether your object has already been discovered.
Multiple reports are futile.

Sergey,

this is simply an effect of the image processing and not a real
object. You'll find several of similar thing in the images. Some
dark stationary spots are "bad pixel", the bright ones may be
"hot pixel".

Sergey,

please do not post claims with only 2 images if you are not
extremely sure that there is indeed a comet. You will always find
noise that can be taken for a comet. The rule is to post at least 4 positions! What you have posted is most likely noise. You can't
judge from two images that it is a real object. Please obey the rules
only to post when:
- the object is seen in at least 4 consecutive images
- it moves uniformly (velocity in x and y)
- its shape and brightness are constant or predictable
- you've made sure that it is not already known or noise

Hello all, I just wanted to let you know that I will be back at

work on Friday to look at all the recent posts (quite a few!).

Dana, that object is a star. Stars will move almost exactly
horizontal from left-to-right in C2 and C3 images. A typical
C2 image will have between 10-20 stars visible and C3 will have
a few hundred. Planets will also move horizontally through the
images but can also move from right-to-left as well. The "C3
Transits" link will tell you when we expect planets to be visible
in the field of view. Also, on the "Found Something?" page, we
provide some exmples of objects that are frequently mistaken as
comets. And by the way, your first post was fine, a written
description can be provided but is not necessary. All we need
are at least 4 positions, size of the image, telescope, and
where (0,0) is in your coordinate system (e.g bottom left,
top left). "How to" tutorials for finding SOHO comets can be
found at http://www.sungrazer.org and a chat site for the SOHO
comet hunters exists at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sohohunter/

Good luck to all the recent newbies.

Please disregard my post below.

It is an image artifact.

Please try to post at least four positions! One is not acceptable,

two only if it is obvious.

Mark, besides giving a wrong date, have you checked if it is
visible in the previous images? If real it should be, because it
is already nearly 200 pixels away from the edge. But I guess it
is not visible there. Please try to do such checks by yourself -
it saves (poor) Derek a LOT of unneccessary work.

Sorry, my times and positions should read:

Date Time x y
2002/10/31 18:26 C2 (681, 849)
2002/10/31 18:50 C2 (676, 836)

Maik, I have been looping through recent images
since 16:26 and none of these show any indications
of what I am reporting. Even though only two positions
are reported here, I do intend to follow up on this.
Other objects, too, do occasionally show up further inwards from
the edge of the images - from what I have seen from
earlier reports.

Please disregard my recent posts. I was fairly certain

this time - but obviously not as precise as I should have
been.
