Hi Martin,
Your positions are not those of Xavier's C3 comet; however,
you should know that Jupiter is just about to enter C3 from
the middle left, which seems to correspond with the same
general area of your coordinates. Indeed, the scattered
light produced by Jupiter's bright image is already leaking
onto C3 as of the 09:18 image this morning, as seen around
row 531 in the 1024x1024 images (measured from top left).

Just to make sure, you have checked my coordinates?
The reason I ask is because you say "you should know that Jupiter is just about to enter C3 from the middle left, which seems to correspond with the same GENERAL AREA of your coordinates. Indeed, the scattered light produced by Jupiter's bright image is already leaking onto C3 as of the 09:18 image this morning.
I also say this because the object I picked out was not this scattered light you mentioned. I did clearly see this light from Jupiter that you were talking about, but my object is clearly not part of it.
The object appears to be moving slower than the background stars and looks convincingly like a comet to me hence why I thought it might be Xaviers...

Hi Martin,
Okay, now I see the object you're tracking. It's moving in the
plane of the ecliptic, and is too dim to be a planet (other than
perhaps Neptune, which is not in this part of the sky). This
can mean only one thing: it's an asteroid. I checked my

Was watching the screen saver believe it or not and this image came up on 20020712_0518_c3.gif
You will notice that bright dash on the upper left corner of the image. I don't have good statistics as to what pixel that is, I only have the cheezy windows image viewer on my work computer here.
Can you tell me what that is? It's right above Jupiter in the upper left quarter of the image.

The thing you are seeing is noise... background noise, nothing else. It looks like a stray ray crossing a bright star, hence why it looks like a comet with a tail!
But rest assured, it doesnt seem like a comet to me! |

The 05:18am image shows Jupiter all alone, but the 14:18pm C3 image shows Jupiter with an equally bright star with it???

Sometimes there are gaps in the data. (You may notice that the black-and-white images are sometimes riddled with blank patches.)
In the color images, instead of leaving them blank, they are "patched" with the same part of the frame from a previous image. It would seem that there is such a gap in the 14:18 image to the left of Jupiter, and it is filled with part of an image from earlier in the day when Jupiter was actually located in the gap.

I can confirm Mike's archive claim. That is SOHO discovery
482. I haven't checked in C3 yet. Rough positions follow.
Martin: Regarding the double Jupiter image, Tony's explanation is
correct. The 14:18 image has a small slice of missing data, which
just happened to correspond to Jupiter's position in the previous
image (5:18).
Penelope: your object is just a cosmic ray.

The object appears in the 10:20am image and is moving from left to right. It appears at the far left, center edge of the image.
Just a hunch that this could well be moving slightly faster than normal, hence being a comet, need some more images to come through though.

I was going to hold off on reporting on the possible object
that Sebastian just reported until a 4th image came out,
particularly since the velocity does not appear to be
consistent. Here are the (1024x1024) coordinates I've been tracking:

I searched in C2 for the dim fragment leading the bright pair
which was visible in 8 consecutive frames of C3, but it does not
appear to survive to its expected C2 entry around 9:15 - 9:30.
Here are the approximate positions for it in C3 late yesterday

For your information: Vesta entered the C2 images on the left
hand edge at 14:06 on July 19. A position from an image today
follows so that you know where it is.
Also as a point of interest you can also see one of Jupiters
moons - Callisto to the right of Jupiter.

I can confirm the recent archive claims of Rainer (01/11/02) and
Mike (01/12/15). Rough positions to follow. These discoveries push
our total to 491 SOHO comets.
Also, the measurements are now current. You should see
comets 480-491 in the next MPECs.
Arturo: your positions correspond to Mercury. The "C3 Transits"
link will tell you which planets are in the field of view.

you may notice that your first point is also in the 01:31 image.
The 02:06 UT image has missing blocks which are filled up with the
blocks of the preceding image. So your first point is not valid.
Second the velocity is too fast for a Kreutz comet and the apparent
track is somehow shifted to what is expected for this time of year.
Third the velocity is not constant. The velocities in pixel/hour
change as follows:
x 95 -> 105 -> 260
y 80 -> 80 -> 195
Just noise.

Has this one has been overlooked? Visible in 11 images. I have not found reference to the object in the reports for June.
A possible Kreutz comet in recent C2 images of 2002/06/16.
At its brightest (11:25) the total area of the object is
10 pixels... The object then gradually fades.

Dave, are you really suprised nobody found your 02/06/16 object
before? This was a very faint object, just barely above the
background. Nonetheless, because it's visible in such a large #
of images, we can confirm it. Excellent find! Rough positions

Please check this report page or the archival reports before
posting a claim. You would have seen that these comets have
been reported almost immediately on July 16 by S. Hönig and
R. Matson. In fact there were three comets and were already
designated as C/2002 O1, C/2002 O2 and C/2002 O3.

Here is another 'missed' C2 Kreutz to add to the list. It is
visible over 9 images. I cannot find a reference to it in either
the SOHO Comets 2000 List or the monthly reports for April. So
this is perhaps one that, at the time, got away...
2002/04/23 (recent C2 images)
This comet is relatively bright and was perhaps originally missed due to a proton storm (giving the appearance of a heavy snow storm within the images) at that time.

of course be the 2002 list (something quite obvious I know) :o)
I think I'll give the proton storm images a thorough check. I'm sure there must be 3 or 4 missed Kreutz's within them.

Kreutz in C2 images of 2002/04/23 - 2002/04/24
All measurements from 0,0 TOP LEFT
In the 4 images between 2002/04/24 00:50 - 02:06 there appears
to be a small companion object situated approximately x=0, y=+9
Coordinates for the companion object are -

Although point-like in appearance, I thought this was worthy of
mention as the companion is visible in the minimum requirement of
4 consecutive images.

Update to post of Jul 28 2002 14:32:19 concerning the companion
object to the now confirmed SOHO493. Although not part of the
run of aforementioned consecutive frames 00:50 - 02:06, on the
preceeding side of the damaged GIF file containing the duplicate
image block (00:26), I would like to report that the companion
object can also be found at the following coordinates -

The above may help to provide a little bit more evidence that the
companion object may be real... If this is true, then I wonder
if the distance of the tiny companion would be sufficient for it
to be given its own identity and recorded as a separate find?
Whatever the outcome of this very minor claim, it certainly
looks like SOHO500 may now be just a week or two away !!! :o)

Dave, SOHO designations should not be declared until Doug or
myself can confirm the report. That being said, we do confirm the
first of your reports of a comet in April 23-24, 2002 images. We
cannot confirm your second report of a trailer. Finally, missing
data blocks are typically not the result of a "SOHO Instrument
Fault".
So, we are now up to 493 SOHO comets with number 500 just around
the corner. That was fast. Like most of you, I did not
anticipate Rainer's huge success finding non-Kreutz comets. Well
done. And yes, congratulations are in order for Sebastian's
non-SOHO discovery.

Sorry Derek if you felt I had jumped the gun with the
designations. Both confirmation and designation did however
appear prior to my post of Jul 28 2002 16:14:51 on Sebastian's
comet hunter website! On Jul 28, 2002 he wrote...
"Furthermore, David Evans found two sungrazers in
LASCO C2 images of Jun 16 and Apr 23,2002 (SOHO-492 and SOHO 493)."
I remember thinking at the time "That was quick." Point taken
though for future reference... No mention of any designation
until we get to see that lovely splash of red ink :o)
