Hello,
I have looked at the claims since my last post and only the
two archive comets reported by Rainer are real. Approximate
positions are below.
Kazimieras your "pending" claim of 02/05/13 is now officialy
confirmed as C/2002 J8. This gives us 454 confirmed comets with
1 pending (Leprette 02/05/12-13).
Hope these comments regarding the recent false claims help...
Xu:
You are reporting cosmic rays. Please see my comments on 5/30
for tips on learning the difference. Also, comets appear in
consecutive images. They will not disappear in one and then
reappear in the following image. Also, please indicate which
"left corner" you are referring to (bottom or top). I'm assuming
you were referring to the top corner based on cosmic rays found
at your given positions. Also, make sure your times are correct.
The first time you give is incorrect (01:18). Be skeptical of
objects not following the tracks referred to in my 5/30 post.
Fan:
These are cosmic rays. Again, please see my comments on 5/30
to learn the difference. Also, we require 4 positions for a
comet claim unless it is absolutely obvious it is a comet. If
you have any doubts wait for a 4th image. Also, the coordinates
you give suggest a large increase in speed, based on your x
coordinates. Comets do not change speeds significanlty on the
time scale of hours. Be skeptical of comets not following the
tracks I refer to in my 5/30 post.
Martin:
This is star HD 31382. You should not post if you think it's a
star. i.e. We expect you to determine if a star is expected here.
Toni:
These are random cosmic rays. In only 36 minutes your object
significantly changes shape and brightness. The object does not
move with Kreutz speeds for this time of year. You should not be
posting 3 position claims (especially an archive) with such an
ambiguous object. We don't always expect new people to know what
"obvious" means, but we hope you know the difference at this point.

Well, as most of you noticed, the LASCO doors reopened
today and we were graciously greeted with another comet...I too
confirm R. Kracht's C2 comet from earlier today. Approximate
positions follow this message. This brings our total to 455 with
1 pending.
Mike, claiming comets with only 2 positions? In C3? Surely you
didn't think the object you reported was obvious.

Hello,
I can confirm both C2 comets visible today. Approximate
positions follow. Congratulations to DJ for his first SOHO
discovery. The other comet belongs to Maik. We're up to 458
confirmed comets, with 1 pending.
Xavier: You are reporting the comet identified earlier by Maik.
Dave: Your object is just random noise (cosmic rays). The reason
we ask for 4 points is that, if one looks hard enough, you can
almost always find three points (noise) that will line up OK.
Also, if the object was real you would have certainly seen it in
earlier images. Plus, a real object would have been visible in the
10:54 image. Last, notice that the shape of your object dramatically
changes in appearance in each frame. This is not typical of comets
we observe in LASCO.
Regarding missing images: We do not have constant contact
with SOHO through the Deep Space Network (DSN). Upon regaining
contact after a period of silence, it takes time to download the
data, then manually process and distribute the final product on
the web. The scheduled times of contact can be viewed at...

Hi Mark,
I haven't checked your prior report, but your most recent one
is not a comet. Whenever a candidate object is moving in a
non-Kreutz (or Meyer or other) expected trajectory, you should
raise a warning flag that the object's velocity and brightness
must be very compelling. A cursory glance at your coordinates
quickly reveals that your object (if it was real) would have
to be moving in a non-linear fashion:

I believe there is a chance of a sighting here - although there are a couple of cosmic rays or something nearby so I'm not too sure.
(0,0) is top left, viewed in the LASCO C3 1024x1024 images.

Hi, its me Christian, listen I may have reason to believe that I may have found a comet using my 3 foot telescope. I had to use a 3 x Barlow lens with a HI2.5mm lens combined to see the comet with detail. I found the comet at 8:30 P.M. EST time, and I found the comet in between the constellation Cancer and Hydra. And I have reason to believe that on the 17 or maybe 18 of June it will be in the head of Hydra. And the object was moving very quickly through the lens, and I've watched it for at least 2 days. other features to create a pair or even three points which line
up nicely. Especially for new folks, guessing after three is not
really appreciated. When you've gained experience, then
occasional posts with fewer than 4 posts are okay.
Also, if you didn't find it in SOHO data, then this isn't
the place to tell us about it. Please, SOHO comets only on these
pages.

I've examined all of the posts from the past week. I can confirm
2 additional comets, with 2 posts still undecided. The two
confirmed ones are the R. Kracht archive find from Dec 3, 2000 and
T. Scarmato C2 find from June 11. Rough positions below. I believe

Since the comet is almost invisible to the naked eye, I would estimate that the magnitude would be about 11 or 12.3 around there. And when I looked at the comet through the telescope it looked like a moving white blob with a coma around it. Write me back at "xxx@xxx" after you have spoted the comet yourself in between Cancer and Hydra put make sure to spot it quick because maybe around June 17 or 18 it will move into Hydras head. Bye. |

designating them as X comets. For those who don't know,
X comets are those claims we believe have a chance of being
real but do not display enough conclusive evidence and/or do
not satisfy the minimum requirements (ex. 4 images).
DJ: We have confirmed your June 8th, 2002 comet.
Dave: Your recent June 13th claim is pending.
Therefore, we are up to 461 confirmed reports, with one pending.

it would be very strange if an object first straight on the
Kreutz path would suddenly make such a curve and deviate from it.
The other question is where it was before 19:06. So, I would
regard it as very questionable. The indicated points are really
quite faint and convincing, too, looking more like noise.

and R. Kracht (7/25/97). DJ, your claim is quite unpredictable
early on and thereafter lies at the background level of noise.
It is impossible to distinguish between something real and noise

Comet? Beta Tauri is out of the field.
I don't know were Rainer is looking but
at the 3pm position in C3 Saturn is just going out of the
field. At the 1pm position there's a BRIGHT glare and
it looks like the occulator is off a bit from the
Sun. My guess internal reflection.

UPDATE bright comet in C3?
Only a small part of the object is visible in images 1024 * 1024
It is well visible in b/w 512 * 512 images from the LASCO website
It appears more or less stationary from 15:15 to 17:00 UTC
making it very unlikely that it is a comet
The same images show a bright arc of light at the upper left of the
occulter disk.
My rough measurements for beta Tau are
time x y (0,0) top left
1331 777,105 with no bright arc/reflection
1515 782,104
1545 783,104
1615 784,104
1645 785,104
showing that the spacecraft pointing seems to be ok

I believe this is distinct from SOHO-285 C/2000 L6 based
on an extrapolated perihelion at least 6 hours earlier
than that of SOHO-285. Images and locations (0,0 in

I've searched through more archive images and found that C/2000 L6
does not begin until 2000-06-11 04:06 (22069887.fts) and is much brighter than the comet I reported, so my find is clearly a

Interestingly the orbit lies almost on the track for Meyer group
comets - but for Oct 1, not 19. There is a remote possibility
that it may be a "border member" of the group (although the
velocities seem a bit too high). If I find time until tonight
I'll try to get preliminary positions and an orbit.

Re-2: Rainer's latest non-Kreutz 1997-10-19
I made a mistake. The apparent track is for a Meyer group comet
(taken the mean orbital elements of all members) with perihelion
at the end of October. So the difference is only 11 days. I have
checked the movement and have to say that I am quite confident that
it is the 22nd member of this group, perihelion around 20.1 Oct 1997
UT.

A possible Kreutz comet in LASCO C2 real-time images.
Lower bottom right. Faint object. Just coming in at the
image border at 01:31. I'll try and confirm the fourth
position as soon as this comes in.

UPDATE to my report on a possible Kreutz comet,
as reported at 01:15 on 25 June. This object has
continued on its path. Please note that positions
can vary by perhaps 1-2 pixels.
Description:
Lower bottom right. Faint and diffuse object, but
clearly on the move toward the sun.

I've spent a few months here trying to learn the ropes before

I can confirm the comet which is visible now in C2 in 8
consecutive images on 2002/06/27 from 01:54 to 04:06. It is
fainting quickly.

A star or "noise"? Object is at the top near
11 pm position.

Congratulations Rob.
Concerning your 2 comets: Those two you indicated are clearly
seperated so it really might be confirmed as two distinct comets.
However: Even the first (bright) one seems to have two seperate
condensations (the second one leaping +2,-4 behind the main
condensation). But I guess there's not enough evidence for it.
