Mark,
it seems unlikely that your object is real, since the velocities
from 15:18 to 16:18 are 43 pixel/hr in x and 75 pixel/hr in y,
while from 16:18 to 16:42 the velocities are 4 pixel/hr in x and
8 pixel/hr in y. This is physically impossible.
Kind regards, Maik

Re: Reports by Travis, Chris and Arturo:
Travis - Comets are found on C2 and C3 images. The EIT images are
too near to the sun. This is just noise. And please do post
coordinates (and more than only one, at least four) as is advised - no one will be able to find your
object without coordinates.
Chris - Please post coordinates as is advised for reporting
suspect comets. You haven't even posted the camera (C2 or C3).
Additionally, all stars are moving from left to right - did you
have checked for this possibility.
Arturo - Your object moves not steadily; just calculate the hourly
velocity in pixel/hour between your positions. They have to be
nealy uniform. But yours are extremely increasing. This is not
expected for a real object. (Besides, never ever you can see
meteors - meteorites are only found after a fall - in the images.
The streaks and dots are just noise of high energetic particels
hitting the detector.)
Please look at common mistakes and already found comets to get a
feeling what you have to look for. Besides these pages I also
recommend http://www.sungrazer.org/ for a step to step guide.
I hope these hints help. Maik

Hi, when looking at the current real time video of LASCO C2 I thought I saw what I believe to be a comet. Perhaps I'm wrong, please validate for me. Latest 25 sgf Images (approx. 4500 kb) as of Tue May 7 09:14:06 GMT 2002, images labeled 2002/05/06 800-1700. In the upper right corner of the image is an object that appears in all images, appears to move from left to right. Here are the requested points:

There acctually appears to be two comet's in LASCO C3 from 2002/05/07 00:42 they are both in the lower hemishpere of the picture. One approximatly 1.5 inches below the sun in 1280x1024 resoution with a trajectory directly into the sun and the second appears to be about 1.5 inches below the first with a trajectory around the lefthand side of the sun. I have put up a version of this image with these to susspected comets on my website at http://ucsu.colorado.edu/~ryanp/pictures/SOHO/20020507_0042_c3.gifthe original is at http://ucsu.colorado.edu/~ryanp/pictures/SOHO/20020507_0042_c3_org.gif Well take a look and tell me if I'm right :).

First a correction on my part. In my last post, all of the
positions given are correct. However, in the table posted, I
put in the wrong date for a confirmed comet. The corrected
table is given below. We'll try to make a decision on the
pending comets as soon as possible.
Also, regarding the report by F. Moser and a few of the other
posts. Cosmic rays are evident in all of the images and take
on many shapes and sizes. The way we distinguish them is that
they do not appear in the previous or following images. Comets,
asteroids, stars, and planets should appear in sequences of
images. If you don't see your potential object in at least 4
frames, moving with a consistent velocity, and with shapes and
brightnesses which vary in reasonable ways, then it's not going
to be considered a real astronomical object. Don't post unless
your object meets these requirements.

Regarding M. Ledingham's report in the C3 telescope for May 6.
This is definitely cosmic rays. Why? The comet appears out of
nowhere and disappears too quickly. As bright as it is, we'd
expect it to be visible in the neighboring images. Also, there
is a rather abrupt change in velocity.

Hi,
I have found an object that I believe may be a comet.
I cannot find any references to the object with my
planetarium software. I am looking at the sky with binoculars.
The approximate location is:
RA 13 3/4
Dec -40
(best estimate via binoculars)
In the constellation Centaurus. On a line formed by M83 and
Iota Centauri, approximately 4 degrees away from Iota Centauri
toward the horizon. Observing location is Santa Fe NM.
I have noticed it both last night and tonight. I initially
thought it might be M83, but the location is not matching.
I am comparing the observation to Ikeya-Zhang which I have
also been observing for the past several nights, and the
characteristics appear similiar to me.
Can this sighting be confirmed or denied?
Thank you for any assistance,
Sincerely,

Re: Two latest reports
Clifford:
you have poisted a claim for a comet discovery on the board for
SOHO comet discoveries. This is not the right place to do.
Please look at
http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/cfa/ps/CometDiscovery.html
for making such claims.
DJ:
Without looking at it I can decide that it is not real, but noise.
Comets should move with a very constant velocity in subsequent
images. If you calculate these figures for your claim you'll see
that the velocities in x and y change:
Velocities in pix/hr x: 72 -> 40 -> 26, y: 10 -> 5 -> 8

Regarding the post by D. Hanson, the points are widely spaced,
which always makes confirmations difficult. In this case,
the apparent changes in speed and the fact that there is no
corresponding point in the intervening image at 00:26, make it
clear that these must just be cosmic rays.
Regarding claims for non-SOHO discoveries, there is no way
that I can deal with such reports. Please do as Maik suggests.
We have confirmed the R. Kracht claim from May 3, 2002,
in the C2 telescope. Still working on the 981108 claim.
That takes the current count to 439, with the numbering as follows:
SOHO # Date Tele. Discoverer
---------------------------------
436 020503 C2 R. Kracht
437 981103 C2 R. Kracht
Also, just to note an interesting artifact in the data. In C2
images from May 9, 2002 at 03:26 UT, there are a series of
straight lines. These all appear to emanate from the bottom
left corner, just off the edge of the image. If you trace
each of the lines back, they all intersect at a single point.
A classic example of spallation. A cosmic ray striking some
part of the detector and throwing out other particles.

I would like to make the following information available to the
public through the courtesy of Mr. Green of Harvard-Smithsonian.

Mr. Green,
I want to thank you for taking the time to reply to my inquiry.
I have made additional observations tonight using the information
that you were kind enough to provide to me. Your statement is
exactly correct; and I accept completely your identification of
the object I have observed as being that of omega Centauri.
I can see now that I also had the object located at a greater
elevation than is correct. It is also of interest to me that
the planetarium software I am using does not show this
object, but I was able to find it within my atlas.
Thanks again, and I will disseminate your identification
to all parties that indicate an interest in the matter.
Sincerely,

George,
comets are found in C2 and C3 images, not in the EIT images. The
EIT images are too close to the sun. Additionally real objects are
not only visible in one image but at least in four. Please make
sure you have read the instructions and hints on the page with the
report form. Also, without giving any coordinates and image size
no one will be able to locate your object. I recommend
http://www.sungrazer.org for a step-to-step guide for finding
comets in C2 and C3 images with examples of previous ones so one
knows what to look for.

There is an apparent comet, quite bright, close to Hercules. The comet looks about 5-6 magnitude compared to M13. The size of the nebulosity is about 20-30 minutes. The approximate coordinates are RA = 16h 53 m and Dec = +42 deg 30 min. This object is close to Hercules and NGC 6239. M92 is also close by. I first saw this object as a very bright like globular in the sky when looking for M92 with my 9x63 Orion binoculars. I have subsequently looked at it with 12X60 visioneer binoculars. It is not M13 or M92 or NGC 6239. However, it is close to NGC 6239. Conditions are 8/10 steadiness and 4.5 transparency. Temp is 77 F. I first spotted the object 5/13/2002 at 05:00 universal time (5/12/2002 and 11:00 PM CDT) with binoculars.
I am now looking at it with an 8" reflector telescope and 15 mm vixen lanthanum eyepieces. If it is not a comet, what is this object? I thought it was a globular at first, but it will not resolve into stars like M13. |

Hi all,
Please note that first of all this is not a chatroom.
Check out your posts before posting to see that they are in a
similar format to the proper previous ones.
No descriptions in words - numbers and coordinates are required.
No comets in the sky either - these have to be reported to CBAT not here.
Regarding Mark Siddoway - congratulations, you have just discovered Comet Ikeya Zhang.

Wow! This should be a good one. We're gearing up to observe this
one with everyone available. Arecibo, LASCO, and maybe UVCS.
I'm doing the measurements for the CCD reduction now. Look for
an orbit solution tonight. Also, we'll do a refined solution
early tomorrow morning. This is the bright C3 Kreutz comet in
the May 13 images.
I've spent the whole day dealing with e-mails regarding the

Regarding discussions of such things as mother ships, UFO's, or
other such phenomena, please let this be the last word. I don't
want this to be discussed here. That said, we occasionally get
lots of bad PR from folks claiming that we are covering up
conspiracies. Everything from missing blocks, to door closed
images, to saturated planets, to data gaps of hours to days,
has been interpreted as us covering up alien spacecraft and
the like.
See some of my favorite websites such as:
http://www.cyberspaceorbit.com/rogues.html
http://www.enterprisemission.com/
http://www.cyberspaceorbit.com/
http://www.ghostweb.com/
Please take any discussions of such matters to newsgroups like
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sohohunter/
where hopefully there can be a reasonable discussion of the
sometimes farcical claims.

I saw the comet on 3 images (then also at 17:50) in 512 format, but then unfortunately I have downloaded 2 bad images in 1024 to check my report (16:06 and 16:26 UT) and obviously I have not been able to see the object. So I sent a second message to withdraw the first.
Perhaps Doug will understand my mistake and will give the credit for this one to me and you ?

Hi all,
I've been busy, which is why you haven't heard much from
me. We got lots of good data on C/2002 J3. Anyway, catching up
on the reports. Other than the reports listed below, all other
reports have been found to be something other than a comet.
First, I have finally confirmed a pending decision, that of a C2
comet from 98/11/08, first reported by X. Leprette and then by
R. Kracht. That one has been designated SOHO-438.
Other confirmed comets are the C2 comet of 02/05/13 07:27-08:50
reported by K. Cernis, also the C2 comet of 02/05/14 16:50-18:50.
That one was first reported by X. Leprette. It was retracted by
himself and then reported by M. Oates. This brings up a point
about retractions. I treat every report the same, even the
retracted ones, as I feel obligated to check all reports. Thus,
I will still give Xavier credit. I hope that Mike is okay with
that.
Pending comets are the C2 report for 00/02/04 11:30-14:06 and
the C2 comet from 02/05/12 23:50 - 02/05/13 00:50.
Thus, the confirmed comet count is up to 443, plus 2 pending.

Emanuele,
your object moves too erratic for a comet and I guess it changes
shape and brightness, too. Comets move with a very constant
velocity in x and y directions - your object moves on trajectory
which cannot be explained by physical laws, even the velocity
changes. It accelerates and decelerates. Together with fact of
changing shape and brightness we can conclude that this is just
noise.

Comets move in a predictable way, i.e. the don't go zig-zag, but
this is what your "object" does. They move almost straight. The
changing shape and brightness shows us that it is just noise.

Hi all,
You may notice that one post from May 20 has been removed. That
is because it contained no information relevant to SOHO comets
and it contained language not appropriate for a forum which is
both public and serious.
Also, I don't know if I'll get to any reports this week. I'm
in the Central European Timezone (Marseille, to be exact) and
as I'm here for work, I have other priorities at the moment.

This is Sebastians C3 comet. If you look a little bit below

Rie,
this is again a cosmic ray hit.
Comets move. The are visible in successive images. Not only in one
image.
Please look at the report form for common mistakes. You will see
that cosmic rays are described there. Second, make yourself
familiar what a comet looks like in the images by looking at the
confirmed reports. Third, look at the requested format. You will
see that several positions are needed. The following recent comets
may be instructive (all are Kreutz group comets).
May 18 C2 by R. Kracht (C/2002 K3 (SOHO)
May 22 C2 X. Leprette (Archival find April 2001)
May 23 C2 M. Meyer
May 24 C2, C3 S. Hoenig
May 25 C2 D. Chen
May 25 C2 R. Kracht (Archival find March 2000)
May 27 C2 R. Kracht (Archival find March 2000)
You'll find positions for these claims at this board and can check
for yourself how a comet looks like. Another starting point is
http://sungrazer.org for a step-to-step guide for finding SOHO
comets.
Kind regards, Maik

A spacecraft status update. In order to perform momentum
management (to adjust the speed of the reaction wheels) and to
perform station keeping (to keep SOHO in its orbit), spacecraft
activities will begin Friday night and last through early next
week. Due to the thruster firings and the fact that the Sun
pointing can't be guaranteed, the LASCO doors must be closed.
They'll be closing about 24 UT Friday night and re-opening
about 12 UT on Wednesday. You can follow the spacecraft action
by watching EIT movies.

Please disregard my last posting - I mistook a close-by reference star as
the moving object!!! The actual moving object, gradually brightening,
is as follows........ my humble appologies.
Not all points have been included in this report, however the object is
visible on all C3 frames within the observed time span.

Hi I think I may have discovered a comet using the SOHO images. The time that I found the comet was listed under the image and it had this time on while I found the comet,(2002/05/24 02:26) that was the currant time that it had when I found the comet. I need you to look at the image to see if I discovered a comet; but I'm preety sure I did. Just e-mail me at xxx@xxx to tell me if I discovered a comet. Bye. |

David: This is Mercury. Brightening and moving just as predicted.
Christian: One image isn't enough. It should be visible in at
least four consecutive images, move in a consistent way and also
the shape and brightness should change in a predictable way. So,
if that is not the case - then its not a comet.
Martin: A star.

I hate to say this, but surely your wrong!
That object is certainly not a star! It moves a lot faster than the background stars and moves diagonally downwards and to the right, discounting it as a star... (speed the moving GIF images up and you'll see)
Also not being nasty or anything, but reading a previous post on this board, I would like my confirmation verified by Doug or Derek...

I'm back in the office, though only for 2 days. Note, we will
update the current count of comets whenever we are able. Also,
the only definitive confirmations can come from Doug or Derek.
That said, I certainly appreciate that the posters to these
pages are generally keeping things under control.

Upon careful rechecking it might be possible that Martin also refers
to Mercury. (The coordinates don't match in y)

Martin,
just wanted to help and avoid confusion for others following
false claims. For discussion I'd like to refer and invite you
and others to the sohohunter yahoo mailing list.
The thing is that Mercury has been posted now about 5 or 6 times
although it is listed in the transits list.
