is actually SOHO179. SOHO is rolled by an angle of ~75 deg at
this time.

Comet discoverer Hyakutake dies at 51
Kyodo News
April 11, 2002

KAGOSHIMA - Yuji Hyakutake, an amateur Japanese
astronomer who discovered "Comet" in
1996, died Wednesday evening in Kagoshima
Prefecture, due to internal bleeding caused by a
heart aneurysm, his family said Thursday. He was
51.

Hyakutake, a native of Nagasaki Prefecture, won
international acclaim after he found the new
comet, using a powerful pair of binoculars on Jan
30, 1996, in the town of Hayato in Kagoshima.

I was going to report an extremely bright comet in C2,

but I see Rainer has beat me to it. Congratulations --
it's a whopper! Unfortunately, given that it is so
bright, it must have been visible in C3 -- and perhaps
this is the C3 comet that was reported earlier... --Rob

Hi folks,

The comet first reported on Friday by XingMing Zhou is
brightening up quite nicely. According to the ephemeris produced
by Brian Marsden in MPEC 2002 G51 the comet will be in the LASCO
C3 field of view until Saturday. It should continue to brighten
for the next couple of days. Expect lots of newbie reports
for a comet like this. For all you newbies, the comet I am talking
about is the one moving from the bottom center up towards the left
side of the images. The comet won't make it into the C2 field.

I haven't yet checked any of the other recent reports.

Off topic --- Solar material

falling back to Sun in C2?

Images from 20020415_1406 to 1606 UT

At positions 85, 340, & 95, 333, ect with my
0,0 at 460 in lower left corner and using
the 512 images there seems to be
some ejecta falling back to the Sun near 8 pm
position?
Looks very interesting, rest is moving away
from Sun but this part is moving "towards"
the Sun.

Coronal Inflows have been seen quite often. We didn't see them at

all during solar minimum, but we see them frequently at solar
maximum. They tend to occur in the same place over and over again.
The current thinking is that they are the result of magnetic
reconnection/reorganization in the corona, associated with coronal
hole boundaries. There was a hotshot on this back in November.
(Note, the current hotshot is the X.M. Zhou comet C/2002 G3).
The inflows also appeared on Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD)
on Nov, 29, 2001.

Hi Claus,

The comet you are reporting is the same one that was
first reported last Friday. The comet has been officially
reported and is designated C/2002 G3. The comet will continue
to be visible in the LASCO C3 images until Saturday. By the way,
you did everything exactly right except for two things. One is
that you don't need to report so many positions. The first post
you made was more than sufficient. Second is that you reported
something already identified. But, this has always been a weakness
of our current system. I suppose we could include annotated
versions of recent images to indicate the objects.

Off-topic! : need help...

Sorry that I send this to form but I have possible
problem with pixel measurment. From three C/2002 G3
images I have a x,y vaues (upper, left):

16-04-2002 08:41 259,607
16-04-2002 12:18 269,572
16-04-2002 12:42 270,568

I using Paint Shop Pro 5. Is these values correct??
Existing any low-memory program (better) which can
measure pixels coordinates?

Again sorry and thanks!!!
Best regards,
Maciej

Hi all,
I've checked all of the claims up to K. Cernis' report
from earlier today. Here's the latest list of recently confirmed
comets.

SOHO # Observer Dates Telescopes
-------------------------------------------
422 X.M. Zhou 02/04/11-now C3
423 R. Kracht 02/04/12-13 C2
424 R. Kracht 99/03/17 C2
425 K. Cernis 02/04/17 C3 so far

Rough positions further below.

It's now time to organize the contest for predicting the perihelion
date of SOHO-500. The prize is to be determined. Probably a choice
of dinner at my house (where you can sample my home brewed beer) or
dinner at a reasonable restaurant of your choice. For the overseas
folks, you'll just have to wait until we're in the same place. Of
course, it also means I'll have to reveal when I'm travelling and
to where I'm headed. The guesses can come in anytime between now
and the earlier of the discovery of SOHO-450 or May 31, 2002.

Not quite sure what to do if SOHO-500 is archival. My preference
is just to give the prize to whoever is closest, no matter what.
Thus, the earliest date is likely to win in that case. However,
there is always the chance some unscrupulous person could have
an archive claim that they hold on to until SOHO-499 comes along.
But, the prize is not really all that great, so who'd want to
cheat?

Comet SOHO-422 anti-tail?

I was looping images of SOHO-422 and I
noticed on the images what I thought was
a thin line at the front of the comet or
anti-tail.
I also reversed the images to black on white
and it was still there.

Is there a faint anti-tail or is this some
pixel effects?

I was using todays 512 images from 1118 UT to 1242 UT

Sorry for off-topic

Thanks

You guys take all the fun out of this. Every time I

Just I was out from my computer and Xavier found one... :)

It may be useful and clearing post on this page ;)

I've now added, on a trial basis, an annotated LASCO image which
shows the 'latest' comet discovered. On the forms page "Found
Something?", you'll find the link just above where you enter
your name to report a discovery.

I'll probably make it two links. One for C3 and one for C2.

Re: last raports

Dear all,
I slight don't understand last raports. I suppose that these was
created by automatic searching program. Raport from Mark looks
strange because X,Y not changin at all. About Silvia's last raport in the
first part looks like a star but then I see chotic X,Y changes.
Also time from these raports are hard to guess.
Best regards, Maciej

First two reports by Mark:

this seems to be a stationary point, since the coordinates don't
change. Not very likely for a comet.

Second report by Silvia:

Most definitely a star, since Y does change only slightly.

General for newbees:
* Please do the reports like you can find it on this reports
page.
* Look for examples of comets in Dougs pages. Read these pages!
Look for common beginners faults. Another good address is
http://members.aol.com/sfhoenig/find.html
* Don't post large lists with positions. At least four (fulfilling
all criteria) but at maximum 10 should be enough.

Hi all,
Regarding the latest reports, which by the way were
created using the Java tool on the LASCO webpages.

The object reported by S. Alonso-Perez is a star. Stars are
visible in every single image. In normal operations, they are seen to move left to right. Stars are easy to spot when images
are viewed as a sequence or movie. There are many stars in each
image. Usually about 200 in C3 and about 10 in C2. Note, the
stars all move at the same speed and in the same direction.

For the report from M. Ledingham, the artifact here is just a CCD
defect. A bad pixel in the CCD which is dark. Note that it
doesn't move. Ever. The only real object in LASCO images that
shouldn't move is the Sun. And that's because we keep SOHO
centered on the Sun.

Please try to familiarize yourself with the data as much as
possible before submitting reports. And make sure you read the
common mistakes section of the "Found Something?" page.

That said, I always enjoy hearing from new folks on these pages.

Hi everyone!

Thank you, Doug and Maik, for your excellent advice - and patience - in assisting newbies like me. The search for new comets and stargrazers is immensely exciting, but in puruit of these, I need to yield to greater learning of how exactly to do this. I have studied earlier reports hoping to be somewhat more cautious next time before sounding the alarm :) Thank you once again, and good hunting!

Best wishes from 70N,
Mark Ledingham

Due to a large solar flare on the solar west limb (which is
magnetically well connected to the Earth), a proton storm
is now evident in the LASCO and EIT images. Due to an unrelated
problem, not all movies are being updated at the moment. For the
uninitiated, this is the 'snow storm' in the LASCO images. It is
due to high energy protons accelerated during the solar event.
These particles are also known as solar cosmic rays, or sometimes
just cosmic rays. The more typical cosmic rays we see in the
LASCO images are galactic in origin.

Just a quick note to let you all know that the Java measuring

tool (the one there is a link to at the top of the Report Forms
page) now shows date and time in a more pleasant format. YYMMDD

Well,
Some interesting news from the SWAN instrument on SOHO.
They've discovered their second new comet, this one also in
archival data. The comet is designated C/2000 S5. Since we
(meaning me) include SWAN comets in the SOHO count, that makes it
SOHO-429. Further information is available in MPEC 2002 H41.
It was visible from September to November in 2000.

Also, I've been able to confirm R. Kracht's archive
Kreutz family comet in data from Apr 26, 2000 in LASCO C2. It's
fairly obvious, so I'm quite a bit surprised it was missed the
first time around. That is SOHO-430.

Regarding the contest for predicting the perihelion date
and time for SOHO-500. I'll think of a list of possible
prizes and let the winner choose from the list. One item on the
list will be the Solar Max video (available in several different
formats). It originally appeared as an IMAX movie in theaters
around the world. Note, the comets C/1998 K10 and K11 (the twins)
make an appearance.

More details about the contest soon. Entries should be
e-mailed directly to me at xxx@xxx

Hi All,

I can report 2 confirmations and 1 definite maybe.
The confirmations are R. Kracht's archival comet in C2 from
2000/04/28 and M. Meyer's real-time report from this morning
in C2. The definite maybe is X.M. Zhou's report from today.
This one will require further deliberation. So we're now up
to SOHO-432. These two confirmed comets are definitely worth a
check of C3 data.

Rough positions below.
