I thought I'd confirm Sebastian's find. It's easy to follow through 16:42 March 2 in C3, after which it gets caught up in CME activity--I didn't check C2. It remains rather stellar. Congrats, Sebastian.

I can confirm the claim of S. Hoenig of an apparent Kreutz family
comet in the C3 data from March 2, 2002. Due to the large CME,
the comet is lost as it reaches smaller heliocentric distances.
Inspection of C2 data did not reveal the comet. Rought positions
are given below. As far as the non-Kreutz claim of R. Kracht for
Jan 3, 1998, that is still under consideration.

Hi all,

Sorry you haven't heard from me in a while. As you can
tell from the publication of IAU and MPE Circulars, we have been
keeping up with things. Anyway, due to other commitments and due
to the fact that we are trying to determine what criteria to use
for these new groups, we haven't been posting confirmations.
To get us up to date, we can confirm the following C2 claims:
R. Kracht 03 Jan 98 comet, M. Meyer 16 Jan 00 comet, and R. Kracht
10-11 Jan 98 comet.

I'll be out of the office until March 22, spending some
time in the CET timezone. Derek will keep track of things while
I'm out, but only intermittently.

Hello all, the most recent mpec has been released and reflects

the current status of all your claims. There is only one exception, R. Kracht's claim for a comet on 1998/01/10(11) is still being scrutinized. Don't expect a decision for a few weeks.

I cannot confirm anything at the positions listed by K. Cernis (except for cosmic ray at pos. #2).

I am a very amateur astronomer and cannot give exact data, but

what I do know is that on 3-23-2002 @ 10:49pm I am observing an
object that is extremely close to Jupiter (line of sight) closer
even than some of its moons and is perpendicular to the line made
by Jupiter's moons. Can anyone confirm?

Update to my earlier email. Date: 3-23-2002. Time: 11:10pm.

The just off of Jupiter is definitely moving and appears even
closer to the planet than all four of its visible moons. I have
a very small telescope and it may be that Jupiter is simply
moving past a globular cluster or other and I'm just too
inexperienced too tell. But I would rather be wrong than to miss
this chance of reporting a comet. Please, can anyone confirm?
It may be difficult to tell for the next short while because
Jupiter may be moving in front of the object if it is simply a
deep sky object.

Disregard.....my "object" was simply a reflection caused by my

optics. Oh how I wish I had a better telescope....LOL. Oh well
maybe I'll have better luck next time. Please excuse this
amateur. Thank You !!!

The comet I and shortly after me Xavier have found is not visible

in C3 - at least I did not detect it (checked backwards until 0142).
It seems to have been hidden by the pylon.
