I apologize,
I should have noted that T. Scarmato's archive claim of

made when Doug returns. Therefore, the SOHO numbering is currently
uncertain.

Hi everyone,
I've confirmed Sebastian Hoenig's find of a comet in C2
data from Dec 2, 2001. My positions are given below. I'm back,
in town, if only for one week. I should think this one is visible
in C3, though a check did not reveal it. This time of year we
should be able to see them in C3.

Having been prompted by the post from earlier today, I want to make
the following comment. From now on, I cannot guarantee that I will
even bother to examine the data when fewer than 4 images are posted.
If the post seems to be speculative, I'm probably going to ignore
it. If further data comes in to confirm it, then post again. Of
course, the first speculative post should never have been made in
the first case in instances such as these.

Hi All,
I've been scanning through archive images of C2 and found
an odd little sequence that's perhaps worth a look. There
are only 5 frames, unfortunately, so it may not be possible
to distinguish noise from a real object. Approximate
positions are given below (1024x1024 - 0,0 in upper
left corner):
08/11/2001 21:54 669, 733 (very diffuse?)
22:06 668, 728
22:30 666, 718
* 23:06 660, 712 (tail?)
* 23:30 653, 709 (coma)
Prior frame is 20:30, and next frame is 00:30. Frames
marked with an asterisk are the most compelling. The
object, if real, is moving in a tight arc, suggesting
a trajectory with a significant velocity component
toward the camera.

noise and the "orbit" is no Kreutz track at all...

Regarding my last two report:
For C2 object:
in the last images seem to be visible a little deviation,
but the Y shift is regular:
in 12 minutes ~22 pixels and in 24 minutes ~44 pixels.
For C3 objcet:
in 1024 images the object is visible also at
2001/12/05 15:18 (631,951), but change in brigthess and shape
in random way, also if the X and Y sfift is regular:
in 36 minutes
X shift ~8, Y shift ~9
in 24 minutes
X shift ~6, Y shift ~7

Hi all,
I've not been able to confirm any of today's reports. The
only suspect one is T. Scarmato's claim for a C2 comet between
1354 UT and 1430 UT. Unfortunately, with the point-like appearance
and only 3 images, this does not meet the minimum requirements.
For R. Matson's claim, the object's shape is inconsistent.
It varies quite dramatically. That is indicative of random cosmic
ray hits.

Re: Jim Danaher's object (Post of Dec 07 2001 16:25:32)
This is noise. Some arguments support that:
1) Where was the object before 17:54?
2) Where is it at 18:30?
3) The shape changes in almost every image
4) The tail-like structure changes
5) The velocities in x and y change erratically (accelerating and
decelerating):
x (pix/hr)
60 -> 25 -> 45 -> 95 -> 30 !
y (pix/hr)
55 -> 29 -> 39 -> 125 -> 40 !

Found a possible object in C2, but have only 3 solid images
to go on. Emissions from the sun drown out the track at the
predicted location for a 4th point and beyond, and I can't
pick out anything convincingly above noise at earlier points
(which are also affected by high solar emissions).
I only post these points because the object follows a
predictable trajectory and has a reasonable "shape". It
moves left to right just above the solar disk, with a
slight curvature toward the sun:

Dear Alex, dear all.
Thanks to have an archive of all comet discoveries this year I was
able to look at the gif-images of Apr 26 where Alex reported a
strange object. There was nothing real visible at the indicated
positions. Alex, maybe you only saw noise that occured when
processing the fits images.
I also do not think that the last non-Kreutz comet was visible
before "crossing" the disc. Occasionally comets have their
perihelion apperently above or below the disc and if they are only
visible close around perihelion they aren't visible long before.
Regarding the other archival finds of Toni:
I also processed the images some weeks ago (short after the first
report was posted). Derek already mentioned that it is under
consideration and I know why: anything is visible in 3 (4?)
images but after that there's no more satisfying position
available. "Diffuse" objects don't change spontaneous to "point of
lights". Regarding the second object: Remember, archival comets
also respect the physical laws. So if you see curved objects,
forget it! Please for everybody who wants to search through the
arcive: Mike O and Xavier have looked at almost every C2 image and
one doesn't have to expect to find even one per year. Perhaps
there are some left in 1996's C3 images - but not many more as
C3's were scanned through by Doug's automated search program.
Regards and happy weekend.

Hans,
please use coordinates and times for indicating an object. Additionally,
your indications let me think you mean Venus, which is the extremely
bright object at right. Please be sure to read
http://sungrazer.nascom.nasa.gov/cometform.html and also
http://sungrazer.nascom.nasa.gov/transits.html
as well as http://members.aol.com/sfhoenig/find.html and look there
for typical mistakes as well as examples of real comets.

Hans,
I just looked at your positions. What you reported in the 9:18
image is a "bad pixel" that doesn't move anyway. I also looked
at some earlier images but could not see anything. Perhaps you
may look at 1024 images so you can see what I describe.

Hans,
the coordinate you gave is right on a cold pixel, which is always
at the same point, so all your coordinates should be same, right?
There are several such not functioning pixels in the field of view

Hi All,
Does anyone else find it a little odd that of the 12 confirmed
comets found since 11/22, 8 have first appeared in the times
between 5:54 UT and 12:30 UT. That's two-thirds of the comets
concentrated in a little over 1/4 of the day. And 10 of the
last 12 have been in the 11-hour stretch from 5:54 to 16:54 --
83%. Us westcoasters in the UTC-8 timezone have thus been
severely handicapped by the mismatch between waking/working
hours and comet appearances in the last month. I guess it's
just a little frustrating when you spend 4 to 6 hours a day
searching image sequences, and have nothing to show for it
but blurry vision. --Rob |

I think it unbelievable to be regarded as a comet
by only two possitions and sometime it is wrong by
3 possition(plot) as I reported the last report.
if report like this there will be two comets here:
(one

Hi all,
It's been a while since you've heard from me.
I've spent parts of the past 3 days trying to catch up on all of
the reports. First, I need to re-iterate that the amount of
'noise' is extreme. Way too many posts of 1-3 images are being
made. These are almost always speculative. Only post with
fewer than 4 points if you really, really think it's a comet.
If it appears point-like, there is no way you can think it's a comet
based on 2 or 3 points. If I find the time this week, I will
do a calculation of the number of posts as a function of confirmed
finds. Of course, I need to eliminate 'confirmation' or update
posts, so it is actually time consuming.
Now, I've confirmed 6 of the recent reports and I am
reserving judgement on 2 of the reports. These are all listed
below. All other reports have been rejected. E-mail me directly
if you wish to dispute any of these rejected claims.
Note, the C3 archive claim of X. Leprette was also found
in C2 data.
SOHO # Dates Observer Telescope
---------------------------------------
380 011208 M. Boschat C2
381 961230 X. Leprette C2,C3
382 011212 S. Hoenig C2
383 011212 A. Mimeev C2
384 011216 X. Zhou C2
385 011216 X. Zhou C2
The two reports still under consideration are:
The T. Scarmato claim of a C2 comet on 01 Apr 25 about 11 UT
The X. Zhou claim of a C2 comet on 01 Dec 18 about 6 UT
About claims still under consideration. Any report where
I have even the smallest bit of doubt I like to review multiple
times. In most cases, I wait until Derek and I can review the
comet together. Believe it or not, due to travel and exams and
whatnot, Derek and I have not had a chance to review anything
together for quite some time. Likely, these reports will have
to wait until sometime early next month.

Toni,
please stop posting one claim after the other. Nobody is able to
distinguish between real messages and false claims anymore. The
"message noise" is nearly unbearable now. Why do you post a
message with positions and saying in the same post that it is
probably noise? So don't post it. Period. Additionally, comets
already confirmed do not need to be posted again with positions.
The confusion is steadily increasing.
It might be worth again to READ and UNDERSTAND what Doug said:
"Way too many posts of 1-3 images are being made. These are
almost always speculative. Only post with fewer than 4 points
if you really, really think it's a comet. If it appears
point-like, there is no way you can think it's a comet based

I think we all know what the result may be.
Slightly annoyed, Maik

Hi everyone. Here is a long promised summary of the web postings.
I have attempted to total up the number of posts and the number
of comet discoveries for all of the highest volume posters. For
those of you who check here regularly, the numbers won't surprise
you. However, I would like all of you to take particular notice
of the results. I am including here all posts, including
'confirmation' posts and 'informational' posts. Trying to exclude
such posts would take too much of my time. From Jan 1, 2001 through
Dec 15, 2001, there have been 1590 posts to this webpage. Eighty-two
percent of the posts came from the top 9 posters. These 9 are listed
below, in order of number of posts. Also, I quote the number of
posts per comet credited. That's probably a more important number
than the total posts. Take heed. I want to give special notice
to Xing-Ming Zhou, Xavier Leprette, and Mike Oates. Why? Check out
the number of posts/comet. Remember, low numbers are good. Now,
for the shaming. I would consider any number of posts/comet of
over 20/comet to be excessive. Those offenders are Scarmato,
Boschat, Biesecker, and Mimeev. Of course, most of Biesecker's
posts are informational. Hey, I run this thing, remember. The
rest of you should really consider cutting down on the number
of posts. Even the 'informational' and 'confirmation' ones.
I tried to include real-time and archive claims, but the real
numbers may be off slightly.
