Rob,
It's only a combination of cosmic ray hits. The object varies too
much in brightness and shape and is not visible in the image of
18:06. You are right, it's a bit too fast.

There are three additional Kreutz family comets which were
reported since Oct 19th. One of the comets is an archive
discovery. I am now caught up. I have considered all reports
up until this moment. The current comet count stands at 369.

I cannot confirm Toni's report. If you ask me it would be better
to wait (1) if a poss. object is on a non-Kreutz orbit AND
(2) if there are only one, two or three images AND
(3) they are only low-resolution b/w's AND
(4) it is not visible in on of the max. three images AND
(5) it seems not so well visible regarding the brightness
development.

For the weekend, LASCO is operating at a higher cadence because
the EIT instrument is 'baking out.' That is, we occasionally
heat the EIT CCD up to remove contaminants which settle onto the
CCD, degrading the sensitivity. Since LASCO and EIT share a
computer and telemetry, that means LASCO gets the EIT resources.
When baking out, EIT does not take any images. Though, when
the bake out ends, there will be a series of EIT calibration
images taken, causing a larger than usual interruption to LASCO.

It is about 1:00 AM, and for the last hour or so I have been seeing a comet over Vermont. All I have is an old pair of binnoculars, nothing fancy; but if you look to the East, and slightly South (from where I live), you can see it. To the naked eye it appears like a star speckling every color in the array. When you use the binnoculars, you can see the tail and everything...it's spectacular. It looks like a "cosmic sperm cell". Hehe
Hopefully there will be something about this in the news tommorow. Please email me if you feel the need to tell me anything important.
(PS, isn't it kind of weird how we had this the night after that spectacular Northern Lights show?)
Best Wishes,

2) THE MOTION IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE TIME INTERVALS

I cannot confirm Toni's report. Nothing except some noise visible
at the indicated positions. Furthermore the object would be far
to slow for a Kreutz comet at such a heliocentric distance.

Re: Toni's last report
This one is easy: One image shows noise to nothing, the two others
show noise. Additionally, the motion is erratic and not typical for a
Kreutz sungrazer.

Hi All,
Possible comet in today's C2 images, though it only
appears in 4 frames. Approximate coordinates:
1024 x 1024 color C2 (0,0 in upper left):
11/12 10:50 731,1001
11:06 715, 984 d -16, -17
11:26 701, 969 d -14, -15
11:50 676, 945 d -25, -24
Avg. velocity [-0.92x, -0.93y] per minute. Points 1, 2
and 4 seem okay, but the 11:26 point while in the right
direction appears to be at the wrong speed (about 4 minutes
behind).
Prior frame to this sequence was 10:06, which would put the
object (if real) off the frame. Nothing visible at 12:06.

Before I get to all of the reports submitted over the long holiday
weekend, I wanted to make sure everyone was aware of the special
operations coming up. The SOHO spacecraft will be undergoing a
series of rolls on Wednesday, Nov 14. These are for calibration
of the various SOHO instruments. LASCO will be observing at
different roll angles throughout the day. I'm not sure what sort
of regular data we'll be getting. Any data we do get will be
oriented at unusual angles. SOHO will be rolled in intervals
of 30 degrees, taking about 54 minutes per roll. It'll run from
about 11 UT to 22 UT.
You can see some of the SOHO details at

I have confirmed 2 of the comets reported from the weekend. Both
were reported by X. Zhou. Both were seen in C2, one on Nov 11 and
one on Nov 12. Both were faint and appeared point-like. Rough

As for the other reports, I cannot confirm any of them. The claim
by X. Leprette for a comet in C2 images on Nov 6th has a motion
which is consistent with expectations. However, due to the lack
of a 'cometary' morphology and the high cosmic ray count, I can't
accept this as a definitive comet. One could probably find lots
of 'objects' with linear motion in these images.
The claim by R. Matson for an object in C2 on Nov 12th has an
inconsistent motion, as stated by Rob. Also, the brightness
variation is not consistent, with the object brightening in the
last frame.

Regarding Rainer's object:
I don't belive this to be a comet because it shows strong
varieties in brightness and shape. E.g in the 19:54 image it is
modestly bright and highly condensed and in the next image it`s
very diffuse and faint. Furthermore it changes shape somwhat
randomly.

I watched the shower from outside New York City, and it was quite splendid; from 0815 to 1100 UT I was seeing well over 100 meteors per hour despite half the sky being obscured by trees, with many bright fireballs (though none to rival Mike's); it was by far the most spectacular meteor shower I've ever seen.

Martin,
please read the rules for posting.
- First, one image isn't enough.
- Second, if its such an obvious object, it should be in the
neighbouring images, too. A average comet in C2 on its way to the
suns center should be visible in at least four images, a lot more
if it is that bright.- Third, if you would have looked at the examples for common
mistakes you would have noticed that this is clearly a cosmic ray hit.
- Fourth, if you are not sure, look at the 1024x1024 images.
- Fifth, if you are still not sure, don't post it.
And last, but not least, the images are so intensively checked
by a lot of people... they would have reported such an obvious
object minutes after the images would have been available.
Look at the other discoveries, try to re-discover it by yourself
and get some experience. With some perserverance you should be successful.
Cheers

I not have found
others images at 1024 pixels, but an elaboration
of the images used show that the object is like
probably a comet moving on a Kreutz orbit.

I see Alexander's object and I believe
it is Messier ( M 4 ) in Scorpius.
The Sun in now in that area sice Delta
Scorpii is noted as well as the other 2
stars Beta and Pi.
Note, there will be more Messier
objects going through the C3 field
soon and Sagittarius shows a few good
ones like M22.

I saw the comet at 16:45 on November 23. It was traveling from the North to the South. The front of the comet looked like it was burning, the comet also had a long tail. The color was bright orange when the sky was blue. It was hard to miss.

Off Topic sort of for new hunters...
The "fuzzy" object just in view on the
right side of the strut that holds the
occultation disk is the gloublar cluster M4
in Scorpius, and not a comet. I would think
that M80 "might" be visible in the 1024 sizes.
As the Sun progress into Scorpius-Sagitarrius areas
one will see more Messier objects like the
Lagoon Nebula, M22, and other know objects.
Use a star map to see what objects may be seen
in the coming months.
happy hunting

The first small jubilee...
Program FEDERICO has found (detected) already 50 comets (2001).
All, who interesting...
I has checked Leprett comet (20011126) in the program
FEDERICO (á. and F. Mimeev).
Program easy found this vastly to weaken and ill-defined comet.
Regrettably, program did not be able to find
a comet in "6 coordinates".

Hello,
I just wanted to say that I have looked at the recent claims
and confirm two of them. They are Zhou's claim of 11/22 and
Leprette's claim of 11/26. Did not see any positions in C3 for
either. Rough positions will follow.
Yurij, I have looked at your positions and they are just
random noise. In fact, as you said, the points are very weak with
all 4 points just about at background noise level. Also, the
morphology of the points (especially the 1st relative to the
remaining) are not consistent.
Derek
