I can confirm Xavier Leprette's non-Kreutz comet.
It has a very similar path to two of my finds but
they were in the top left corner (SOHO-103 & 298)
It also has the same appearance. Nice find.

Sorry guys, I am going to stick my neck out here and say that
I think that this is part of a CME and not a comet.
It is moving far too fast for a comet, and it has about the
same velocity as the rest of the CME. Also the first image 08:06
in is very bright just at the edge of the occulting disk, and
then gets fainter as it moves out, quite the opposite of a comet.
We have never seen a comet with such an apparent brighness so
close to the occulting disk.

I'd rather agree with you, the object seems going to fast to be a comet.
So I was mistaken in thinking it was a comet (I should have checked
on 1024 images). I'm looking forward to reading Doug's opinion about it.

Mike O says it gets fainter moving
away and not typical of a comet.
Is this not the actual case in comets:
1) approaching the Sun get brighter.
2) moving away get fainter? ( unless there is an outburst ).
I also note, doing a "manual" loop
with the arrow keys on my computer
( like a blink comparitor ) that the "object" does
move in same velocity as CME and note
the bright "knot" piece near the 4 pm
area, doing the manual loop it and the
"object" move at same speed.
And finally, there was a similar occurance
last year (?) with a piece that was bright and had
a tail, it was coming off the bottom part of the
C2 image looked like a comet and went into the C3
images also. Anyone remember that?

I have looked at the recent claims and I do confirm the
reports of a non-Kreutz by Xavier on 10/9/01, and today's comet
by Rainer (positions will follow).
I have looked at XingMing's report and agree that the
object is associated with the CME based on velocity and
brightness changes, although it is very rare that a structure
this dense and compact exists in the tenuous corona.

Regarding the last reports:
At first mine of yesterday: I followed Derek's positions of Rainer's
find and what I reported obviously is the same comet visible
at the same time in C2 and C3.
At last Toni's: I have the same images and also some previous and
I could not see any cometary object.

Hi all,
It looks like R. Kracht's find for October 15th is probably
a good find. We're still waiting for more data to roll in here.
We're working on restoring access to real-time movies. It's
likely that you'll have access to them directly from the SOHO
website http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov. There was a major
security issue, hence the lack of access to data. We
don't know how long this will take to get cleared up.

Yes, I agree that Xavier has found yet another one. Good going.
I believe that takes our tally to 358. That's the one in C2 on
October 16th. Still have to check the C3 data for this one and
for the October 15th comet.
If you think I've been quiet lately, it's about to get worse. You're
unlikely to hear from me before Oct 25. I'm busy with work, but
unfortunately, it's not the sort where I'm doing any science.

Yes! The two comets that I Have reported are the same
Sebastian's comets.
But, for honesty, I saw the brigth comet on b/w images at
07:42 abd 08:18, but I not have reported only two positions.
Many time, for this, I Have received a rebuke.
I think that the credit for one comet is for Sebastian and
Xingming, and for the second comet for Sebastian and me.
This is my opinion.

Just a comment on Toni's suggestion:
Perhaps reporting less than 4 positions has to do something with
reliability. Count my false reports within the last 6 months...
Doug wrote in April and May:
"I have always given credit to anyone, no matter how few images
and or positions they report. That's not something I wanted to
publicize too widely."
"Yes, we accept fewer, but only when it's
such an obvious comet even my Mom would recognize it."
"Generally, if a comet is bright enough and extended enough to
look cometary, then fewer than 4 images is okay. Though, not
really desired. Also, some observers are better at
distinguishing comets from the noise than others. So, I don't
mind so much if they submit an occasional report with fewer than
4 images. Some people post virtually every day and are wrong
over 99% of the time. Others are accurate to that sort of level."

I have only seen that comet close to the sun in only
two pictures, Get the third picture when coming out
I have reported to it , I saw the report of Sebastian too
at the same time. Because nearest several it finds to
be darker comet, attention of I only in disc nearby,
I have not found another brighter one. Two comets are
both that Sebastian was found, this is undoubted.
The position public lecture lacked very much causes a
lot of mistakes, this is really a question, Everybody
does not hope to see too much information of no use, it
is believed that Doug can deal with this question better.

I just read the confusion of these comets.
I think Doug should restrcture the discovery
procedure as this:
No matter "how expert" an observer is at finding a
comet on 1 image, the new implemented form will require
4 XY coordinates, "not 1, not 2, not 3" but 4 coordinates.
Any less will not be accepted.

Confirmation of likely candidate.
The 11:18 UT image shows another point in good agreement with the
positions given by Sebastian. I think Mike is actually referring
to this. The next image should be confirmatory.
OT: Congrats to all to the flood of discoveries. Especially
Xing-Ming's find is exceptional and not as "boring" as all these
Kreutz comets.

with all retentiveness - this is ridiculous. Two images, separated
by two hours and one is only a small and unprocessed B/W image -
there is not the slightest reason to post such a claim.
Even if there might be a short flood of comets, we should still be careful to hold down noise and to apply scientific methods for
inspecting and reporting. This is no Olympic Games in finding
comets and there are more important things in the real life than
to lose credit for a comet that is nevertheless called "SOHO".
When I look back at the last days on this board I see that at
least half of the messages could have been avoided if one had
a look at first at the board before posting.
Just MY 2 cents. (and my contribution to noise :-( )

The Planetary Science Institute and Jarnac Observatory request
your assistance with an observing project we are conducting.
For the past four weeks, we have been observing the Kruetz
sungrazer track a considerable distance from the sun with
groundbased telescopes. The intent was to extend the observation
arcs on these comets enough to better determine the orbits.
The fields we started to observe four weeks ago would now have
comets entering the SOHO coronographs (starting this weekend).
Unfortunately, we have not had any detections to date.
Our request is that you, as observers, be especially diligent in
regards to finding comets in the SOHO data until approximately
the end of November. PLEASE do not flood Doug and Derek with
possibles. Go about your normal discovery routines. We will
only use (and only be able to use) the comets reported and
confirmed via the normal channels. I just ask that you be a
litte extra careful in your searching.
The data from our survey work, as well as the discoveries made
here will eventually be published in a journal article. As
we have not yet detected a comet in our more distant fields,
the paper may concentrate on how the Kruetz Comets
brighten as they approach the sun vs. farther away. I will keep
you posted as to the progress.
I appreciate your work and effort. You have more patience than
I do to look for these tiny specks in the coronagraph images.
Once the period of observability has passed, I will contact you
individually regarding your involvement in this project.

Comet found in bottom right picture of LASCO C3 Image dated 22/10/01 13:52. If the image was a clock, the comet would appear at 4:30.

Archive comet sungrazer in C3 images from 08 November 1996
The suspect object is faint, fairly elongated and fuzzy without tail. It is visible in 10 consecutive C3 frames.

Yes, that's SOHO-367 (unconfirmed) - among the brightest SOHO
sungrazer ever observed.

Without even looking at Toni's positions - there can't be a real
object since the movement is erratic and not typical for a Kreutz
type comet:

Looking at my star maps of were the Sun
is now, the bright object in the lower right of
C3 images is not Mercury but Alpha Virginis -- Spica.

Hi everyone,
It's been a really long time since you've gotten one of these
reports. There's a large backlog of reports I'm still sorting through.
This e-mail covers 6 comets reported between October 13, 2001 and October
17 at 20:00 UT. Five of the comets are apparent Kreutz sungrazing comets.
One is obviously not following the Kreutz comet trajectory (SOHO-359).
Not all possible data have been checked yet. Thus, it is possible the
comets reported to be in only the C2 telescope may yet be found in C3
data.
As many of you are no doubt aware, there are quite a few more
comets which have been reported. I hope to get those out to you early
next week.

Object moving right to left C3 images - 20011027_1742 UT
Not sure what it is. It looks like a faint
star, but is moving opposite to them from
right to left.
It's hard to get accurate with 512 sizes and the
coordinates are as close to were I can locate it.
Just to the left 4 pm position of the faint black
"noise" and a star.
Here are the (approximate) XY coordinates of
the object and an image of the area.

Please forgive the lack of proper formatting, I just wanted to
report this. Tuesday evening I sent an email to DR SOHO
regarding two comets I had observed on LASCO C3. They were in
animated GIFs for:
2001/10/18 ~22:00 - 2001/10/19 ~19:00
2001/10/22 ~01:00 - 2001/10/23 ~17:00
The email was sent not long after the occurrence of the second
of these. I didn't know how to report these, that's why I
sent it to DR SOHO. Friday morning I saw the second of these
reported on CNN and wondered if I had actually been the first
to see it.
Tonight I was rechecking the animated GIFs for:
2001/10/17 ~05:00 - 2001/10/18 ~01:00
and observed one I had missed before. BTW, all of these are
easily seen in the GIFs and move from lower right toward the
sun, which probably means they've all been reported, but I just
want to get this in, in case any have not been.
Following is the email I sent to DR SOHO, BTW I never got a
reply:

I have downloaded two of the animated GIFs for LASCO/C3, and
on each of them I saw an object that came in from the lower
right and seemed to impact the sun. These objects had the
appearance of comets, but were small. I would like to know
if they were, in fact, small comets or some other type of
phenomenon. The objects I'm asking about are in all frames
after they first appear, and travel directly toward the image
center (sun) frame-by-frame. Am I discovering small comets,
or what?
If yes, perhaps I should report them in case I'm the first to
see them. If so, how would I go about doing this? Is there
any recognition for discovering a comet that is destroyed by
impacting the sun as soon as it's discovered? Thanks for any
info.

This covers all reports up through the end of the day on
Oct 19, 2001.
First and most importantly, I need to correct an error in my last
report. The non-Kreutz comet in the C3 telescope on Oct 14-15
(SOHO-359) was incorrectly credited to D. Chen. D. Chen was
thoughtful enough to point out that the credit for this report
goes to X.M. Zhou.
This report includes 4 more comets, all apparent Kreutz family
sungrazing comets. The table below lists the SOHO #, discoverer,
telescopes and dates visible for each of the comets. Note,
SOHO-365 was fairly bright with a nice long tail.

I don't know were Ranier got 0030 UT image
as I cannot find it on the SOHO site or the
other site. I don't know if Rainer is
talking about black and white images or the
red SOHO ones....!
But the new image just came in at 0206 UT and the object
is there and is a comet.
So......to heck with it.... I'LL CONFIRM Rainer's
find in C2! ^^^^^^^^^^^^

Tentative object visible in only three frames of C2.

Next frame is 19:31, but nothing visible. Previous frame
was 17:30, but the object if real would have been out of
the field of view. Speed seems a tad high, but the
direction is correct.
