There is a weak possible object near by the comet SOHO-328.
Difference in coordinates 16-17 pixels. Orbits identical. Possible general parental body.
Object not obvious. Found under machine processing (Program A. Mimeev @ F. Mimeev) the vicinities of comet SOHO-328.
Brightness is sailled decreases and seen on 6 consequent images.
(On the last frame an object in the manner of the single pixel already).
Difficult seen at cartoon in view of small contrast.
Better visible when considering a separate images under greater increase.
Heavy object for identifications.
For the comparison (parenthetically) coordinates of known comet.
(Possible I mistaken in interpreting a nature of object...
But this on computer conscience already.
These coordinates to to me computer gave...)

Hi Derek.
Regarding the C3 report I am in agreement with you.
For C2 report we have an X shift of 6 pixels and
Y shift of 7 pixels in 12 minutes between 01:54 and 02:06.
This mean that, if the motion is regular, at 00:54
the position of the object is (504,477), out of the C2 FOV.
Also, at 03:57 we have the position (413,371). At this
position in 512 pixels images I see a diffuse object, but
I am not sure on this.

I've looked at the most recent claims, the ones since the
confirmation of the Aug 4-5 comet.
I cannot confirm any of these recent claims. As Sebastian
says about the T. Scarmato claim for an object on Aug 7, the
suspected object doesn't seem reasonable.
For the S. Eraiah claim of Aug 8, there are only two points which
seem reasonable. The third, is obviously very different from the
first two. The edge of the Sun is actually far inside the disk
and no such glow has ever been seen for any comet.
The latest T. Scarmato claim, for Aug 9, seems unlikely. The
apparent motion is not linear.

It doesn't seem to be a comet. In the images of 6:06 and 6:30

Hi all,
I've checked all the recent reports and cannot confirm
any of them. None of them appear in additional frames which would
be required for confirmation. In addition, some of them are
bright in one image and not there in the image before (or after).
Just not reasonable.
A note about our observations. Beginning tomorrow, Aug 14,
we are taking full color filter sequences in the C3 telescope
every 2 hours for a whole month. We are hoping to actually catch
some comets. I don't think this will actually be noticeable to you
and it doesn't require anything special. Just the usual detection
of comets. But, the brighter the better.

A few notes:
First, the data gap on Aug 14 from 0100-1600 UT is real and will
not be filled in. Something happened to our on-board computer,
we don't know what. It appears to be functioning properly now.
See how suddenly this all could end?
Second, due to the difficulties and the lack of Deep Space
Network Telescope time for SOHO, we were unable to load the
plan containing the color sequences for C3. We did run a single
sequence at 1800 UT, but that'll be it until tomorrow. We're
hoping everything will return to normal tomorrow.

C/1996 J1 Evans-Drinkwater found in LASCO C3 images
It is in 190 (one hundred and ninety) C3 images from

I will post more positions at a later time and hopfully
produce a light curve. The above Mag estimate is provisional.
Joint credit for this find goes to Jonathan Shanklin.
Jon asked me if I could check the C3 images from
20 Dec 1996 to 9 Jan 1997 as he calculated it may just be
in the C3 field at the northern edge, but it may be too
faint to be detected. I downloaded and processed the images
for this period only to find it was not there.
I obtained the elements for the orbit from Jon and I
worked out that it that it should be at the left hand
edge of the images moving upwards slowly. Another look
at the images soon uncovered the comet.
C/1996 J1 is fairly condensed with a very slightly diffuse
coma. No tail is visible. It's brigtness does vary along it's
track.
The images for the period 29 Dec 1996 to 9 Jan 1997
are very sparse at the full resolution with about 2 images
per day.
Incidently, this is another 'Twin' if it can loosly be called
that, (very loosly, I know it's not really) the other comet
in the same field is SOHO-6

Additional information on my last report.
I tended to withdraw my report because the object changes very
much in shape regarding the 1024 images. What makes me hesitating
is that I could locate it in the 1024 images of 6:18, 6:42, 7:42,
8:18, 8:42, 9:18, 9:42 (+ 5:42 b/w) on a reliable trajectory with

I am unable to confirm the last two reports.
The report of E. Singh is almost certainly a star, as the
motion is consistent with all of the other stars in the image.
As always, anything moving left to right is most probably a
star or planet.
The report of T. Scarmato appears to be just cosmic rays. When
the data are as noisy as they are right now, one probably needs
to observe something in much more than 4 images for us to confirm
it. These solar proton storms just make the data difficult for
quite a long period of time. Nothing for us to do but wait for
the flux to go down. |

Dear Doug,
waiting the end of the strong flux from the Sun, I Have looking
again at the images of the report from Aug 13 2001
11:48:55 regarding an object in C3 images.
I find that the object seem visible on other images starting
form 07:42 UT.
Approximate Positions 512x512 (0,0) top-left corner:
2001/08/13 07:42 (360,349)
2001/08/13 08:18 (358,348)
2001/08/13 08:42 (357,347)
2001/08/13 09:18 (356,346)
2001/08/13 10:20 (352,342)
2001/08/13 10:42 (351,340)
This last position is different to previous post because
looking well on images I Have noted that the brigth point
is not in agreement. Instead, there is another point more faint
that is in agreement with the previous point in shape,
brigthness, and with the time interval.
Due to the time gap of the images, I Have extrapolated the
positions for the object.
If the motion is regular at 13:42 UT the object must to be
approximately at X=340 and Y=324.
I find an object at followings approximate positions:
512x512 (0,0) top-left corner.
2001/08/13 13:42 (340,325)
2001/08/13 14:18 (338,323)
2001/08/13 14:42 (337,322)
2001/08/13 15:18 (334,318)
2001/08/13 15:42 (333,316)
2001/08/13 16:18 (330,314)
The object continue to be faint.
Now,I want to work on 1024 images to verify this observations
and eventually to do positions more precises.
Regards,
Toni Scarmato

Toni, I checked the 1024 images on Aug 13 and again today. There
is absolutely nothing above the noise level. At the second set of
positions you spot in some images one of the Stars
SAO 98502 (8.6mag), SAO 98501 (9.2), SAO 98485 (9.1). They are
very hardly visible in 1024 images and at least the 14:18 position
is one of the stars. Also this secons set of positions contains
some inconsitances.

I cannot confirm Toni's object.
Chen's non-Kreutz comet must have a relatively large perihelion
distance as the tail points towards the sun in C2 and the movement
through C2 images is quite slow. |

Further to Sebastian's comments about Chen's comet, looks
like a possibility for ground based observations from the
southern hemisphere in a week or two. Hope we get an orbit
on this one before then!

Congratulations to Chen for this find.
If you look at the velocity of this comet, it has slowed right
down by 12:42. I suspect that it may be at the furthest southerly
point, and may start to move back toward the Sun shortly, moving
back along the path it came, but slightly to the left of it's
previous path. In other words we are looking at the orbit roughly
edge on, with a perihelion time at about 7:00 UT 26 Aug.
A very nice discovery.

Chen's comet has re-entered the C2 field at 18:50
Just as I predicted :) (Well it's either that or another one)
Much fainter this time round.

Mike,
it indeed is Chen's comet. I followed it in C3 and it faded
dramatically.

Possible ex-sungrazer in C3 images - 20010826_1842 UT
There is a bright point moving
away from Sun above the semi-bright
star above the dark "glitch" to the
right. Near the 4 pm position.
The area is bright and was hard to
get exact XY's but close to area.

Disregard my last post.
It's unusal that I can see the object
on 512 pixel images "but" after a long download
of the 1024 pixel images, it was not visible!
amazing.
I think my eyes are going bad now.
Hard to see things as I could last year
even looking at the sky is funny.
I could not even see the new soho comet
in C2 on it's "return" as said
by Oates!!

Hi all,
Sorry for the lack of posts. I've been checking the reports
but not posting myself. Other things are occupying my time.
Anyway, the Aug 21 C2 object reported by R. Kracht is still
being considered. I haven't made up my mind on this one.
The Chen Hua Dong find for Aug 25-26, the non-Kreutz comet
is of course, easily confirmed and did apparently do a C2-C3-C2
transit thing, fading rapidly. A short period comet inclined 90
degrees to the ecliptic? That's a strange one, I think. Still
waiting on more data. My positions below:

New! J. Shanklin has compiled a list of asteroids brighter
10.5 that could be seen in the C3 telescope. The list runs
through 2009. Let's hope the mission lasts that long.
Click on the "C3 Transits" page to find the list.
Now, how about some bright sungrazing comets sometime soon?
