I have checked your report and I have two reasons against a comet.
1. The shape varies not really predictable in the 1024 images.
2. The relative movement varies very much (0.19 pix/min, 0.43,
0.42, 1.71)

to the new people looking, the fan shaped
object on the left side of the C3 images is
the planet Jupiter begining to enter the
field.
Check Doug's web page for transits of
objects that will enter the fields.

Possible sungrazer comet in a real-time C2 B/W images now
It is visible on 2001/06/02 from 21:30 till 22:30 UT in 3 consecutive frames,
at South-East quadrant on the left of the logo.
It is visble at 21:30, 22:06, 22/30.
The suspect object is moving towards the sun.
I'm not sure, so I'm waiting color images to confirm my report
and to give coordinates.

I can confirm my previous report. The suspect object looks like a faint, fuzzy data point without tail. It is visible on 7 consecutive images from 21:30 to 23:54.

Hi all,
I've reviewed all of the claims from the last week. That is
to say, I've reviewed all of the claims which were not rescinded
by the originator. That left 10 claims from May 25 - June 4.
I can confirm 4 of them, the T. Scarmato claim from May 29,
the X. Leprette claim from June 3, the M. Oates claim from June 4,
and the S. Hoenig claim from June 4. Approximate measurements
for these 4 are all given below. The C3 data have not yet been
checked.
There is one which is doubtful, but I could change my mind,
which was reported by both M. Boschat and M. Oates. But, I've
only seen 3 points which I believe, which isn't enough.

Regarding the report of P. Laquale.
At the positions reported, there are no objects visible. However,
in case there is an error in the positions given, I include
below the positions for the comet currently visible. Positions
are given in both my standard format (0, 0) bottom-left corner of
a full-res image and in the usual internet posts of (0, 0) top-left
corner of half-res images.

I can confirm that there is probably a real comet at the positions

one more image before calling it a comet for sure.

In reference to my last post (Jun 04 2001 14:58:17), i had
many problems with my computer and net. (today too).
Only now i see my error of 50 pixels in Y positions (0,0
top-left corner in the usual internet posts of half-res images).
If you subtract 50 pixels from Y positions (B/W images), you have
the same positions that Doug give me !

First, let me say, don't get carried away with posting fewer than
4 images. Only do this when you can feel very certain about it.
Which means, it had either be very bright and extended or following
the Kreutz trajectory in a perfect way (and 3 isn't really enough).
That said, T. Scarmato's latest C3 claim (with only 3 images) is
definitely not a comet.
Also, the earlier C2 claim can now be confirmed, having appeared
in a large number of images. Observed positions, thus far, given

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all the posts. Except that I think things are
starting to get out of control. Way too many posts with fewer than
4 images. Hate to say it, but covering all the reports since my
last post on June 5th, I'm only certain of one object.
That's the object reported on June 5 by M. Oates in C2

The only other likely candidate among all the posts is the one
posted by M. Oates on June 6 @ 10:47:37. I saw the same points
in the images before I read Mike's post. However, after much
scrutiny by several people, we can only come up with 3 images.
This one doesn't meet the standard of 'exceptional' so we can't
call it a comet.
Everything else seems to be a bust. Please, try to make sure you've
got something reasonable first.

Possible sungrazer in C2 images - 20010608_1406 UT
Fuzzy object on 1406 image to lower
left of LASCO logo. I'm not sure about it,
it may be noise I'm waiting for new images.
***BUT***, I want to post this to see if my
flipping the images 180 degrees as I have to
now gives my XY start point in upper left
making it 0,0. I want to check if others can
match my XY's up this way.
So, I'm posting the XY of the object
and 2 bright stars above the LASCO logo.
Here are the (approximate) XY coordinates of
the object and 2 bright stars for the 1406 UT
image only.
Remember, my image is rotated ***180 degrees****

Hi Mike B. and Tony,
I think that it's not fair play towards Doug and other Soho
comet hunters to report a non obvious object with only one image.
Doug has repeated many times the good rules about it. Post a claim with only one
image is not serious.
May be there is a suspect object at 13:54 or 14:06, but it is not obvious, so
we must wait and see before to send a report.

Also, my decision to post was to see if
any other SOHO observer could get close
to my XY's I posted to help me decide if the
new method of my rotating images would help
in my accuracy.

Hi everyone. Glad you are able to work these things out among
yourselves. In fact, I generally ignore 1 position posts.
Just to let you know. I am about to leave for Africa. There'll
be a total solar eclipse there that I'm planning to see. Let's
hope there are no clouds. I don't return until June 24. Derek
will be here, so he'll deal with your reports. Anything that's
questionable will wait for my return, otherwise, he'll make sure
to do the CCD measurements. Note, we're hoping to image a comet
during the eclipse. So, please, please, please, pay particular
attention to the data on June 20, and June 21st until about 12 UT.
After that it is too late. Please report anything which looks real,
but try to keep the noise to a minimum. Derek will be checking the
data and the posts to try to verify any comets we will be able
to see during the eclipse. If it's in C2 on June 20, that's too
early. If it's in C3, then we have a chance. If it's in C2 on
June 21st, then we also have a chance.
See you in a few weeks.

ACK! - I don't believe I see
a fragment form Oates comet. Ahh well.
#2. My post was not in "fustration", I was
typing quick and if it seems that way to
some it is not.
#3. Toni. Oates found 2 comets last night, you're
seeing his 2nd one. I can't see anything following
it, but hey...I don't have the eyesight like Doug
and you younger people :)))
#4. I think me, yep, me and others are starting to go
overboard with posts again - gee..I'm doing it now!
I'll end in saying -- check the form first before reporting
a comet in case it has been found, and hit reload 2-3 times
to be sure nothing new is posted..that is why I did not see
Mike's post till after I posted again even though I hit reload
twice :(

I could not find any (real) object in the reports of
John Seach (June 8 17:29:19 ff.), Mike Boschat (23:07:42) and
Toni Scarmato (June 9 05:52:55 and "Second object" in 06:23:06
report) comparing with the 1024 resolution images.

Possible sungrazer in C2 images - 20010609_ UT
It's right in that solar streamer and
hard to get accurate XY's. It's near that
small "dark spot" mid right going towards
Logo.Not the object but the dark spot. Hope the ascii
drawing helps.

It is visible on 2001/06/10 from 07:31 till 08:06 UT in 3 consecutive frames at South-West quadrant on the left of the logo.
The suspect object is moving towards the sun.

After an accurate check of color images, I cannot confirm my report (object seen on B/W images) posted at 10:33:52. This is not a real object. But the suspect object reported at 10:50:35 seems real. It is visible on 11 images from 00:06 to 0:430 UT.

I think it may be part of a faint
solar streamer to the left of he main streamer.
I managed to get 2 of the 1024 sizes and
loop them, the streamer connects to the "fuzzy"
blob when looped fast at 8 frames/sec.

This is a "very" diffuse object. I'm
see something coming off the frames
when I loop both manually and automatically
and it curves towards the Sun.

Possible comet directly under the Sun, moving toward it in the C2
images. 3 positions seen, another image after 18:54 needed to

Regarding Dave Johnson's Report.
What you seeing here is just noise, the points are also too
close together for the time differences between the individual
images. But more importantly you are reporting images that are
not next to each other. There are many other images between the
times you have stated. If the object was real it would appear
in all the intermediate images as well.

This comet was report previously on 25 July 2000. It was
designated an X/Comet as there were not enough images,
(the last 3 above).
I have been going through some of these X/Comets and I was
able to process the 512x512 PW Seq images. These are not
shown as real time images, and I have never before been able
to process them as they have widely different exposures, filters
and polorising filters. Today I have worked out to do this.
In addition there are more positions for SOHO-185 discovered
by Derek. This makes the pair another 'Twin'

I can confirm one claim since my last post. This is M. Oates'
archive claim on 5/31/97.
Mike, I remember the original claim and I must say I am confused
as to why Doug or I didn't use the polarization-sequence images
to confirm the original claim, as this is our standard procedure
for comet-looking objects with less than 4 images. Job well done.
As for comets that have four 1024x1024 images, we normally do not
use polarization images as the decreased resolution and intensity
result in increased uncertainty of the data points. Additionally,
the images only span ~10 minutes so including these points would
most likely hurt the accuracy of the orbit calculation. Hence, we
leave them out.
Positions for the comet are below. This does complete a 'twin'
comet with Soho-185 (C/1997 K4). Note the first 4 positions are
taken from 1/2 resolution images and converted to full resolution
positions.

OT -- I am out of comet hunting. My computer
has died and somehow the registry was lost and
now I have no way of communicating, or getting images.
We tried to re-load Windows 95 but to no avial.
I have lost ALL my email address, and my astronomy programs
that were on teh PC.
If I can save up to buy another computer I'll
be lucky and hopefully back on.
Now I'm using an old 486 laptop via modem to send this
out.
I can access my email but it will be
slow in replying...

Confirmation of Sebastian's comet in C2 with a report that
it can also be seen in C3 images. It is faint, and passes
through a bright coronal streamer.

Comet in achive C2 images from 27 Mar 1998
This IS a comet, but as it's only in 3 images, I suppose it
will get an X/Comet classification :(
It follows on right after SOHO-202 on the same path, fainter,
but still has a tail. The time gap before the next image is
too large and it has faded.
I found this while checking out one of Maik Meyer's X/Comets
just prior to SOHO-202 on 27 Mar 1998.

UPDATE: I believe I was wrong in my last report.
It looks like it's the same comet. My spread sheet must
have an error that determins the pixel/min (I was in a rush),
working it out manualy works out correctly.
An additional images have come in. So the updated positions

there is absolutely nothing definite in the 1024x1024 images but
noise (and in some images not even noise). I find it a very far
guess to post such "possible comets" and then only with three
images. Remember, 512x512 images can produce aliasing effects,
which show something that isn't there.
If something in 512x512 is already "very faint and diffuse" it
would be better to re-check with 1024x1024 before posting and
producing "report noise". I see definitely NOTHING at your
indicated positions.

The suspect object is fairly bright on the first and second images.
It looks like a round blob without obvious tail.
It is clearly visible in 8 consecutive images, except on the image 22025203.fts
that is is very noisy.

Toni,
Nothing visible in C3 images at the indicated positions except
some noise. 3 things:
1.) That is not the positions Kreutz comets are visible at this
time of year.
2.) Faint in C3 close to the noise producing pylon?
3.) To all: Please only report clear objects today. Recheck in
1024 images as Derek is still tuned for eclipse comets. It
won't help him getting a mass of false reports. Perhaps a real
one will be overlooked in many false reports.

Unfortunately the total eclipse has come and gone without even
the slightest hint of a comet. Oh well, maybe we'll have better
luck next time.
A few notes...
1.) Toni, I agree with Maik. You should not be posting with less
than 4 positions unless there is an OBVIOUS comet. For no reason
should there be a post regarding faint objects. As a guide to
what obvious really means, I would regard Sebastian's claim on
6/16 as obvious. Unless it is as bright as this comet, you should
not post unless you see an object in 4 images.
2.) Mike O. I agree that the 3/27/98 claim may be worthy of an
X/Comet designation. However, I will wait for Doug's opinion on
this.
3.) Below I have SOHO comet designations for all the accepted
claims in the last 2 weeks....

I've spotted what appears to be a comet from the LASCO C3 IMAGES ON 6/20/01 13:42 thru 6/22/00 00:00hrs. It begins just above the 9 oclock position from the left corner field of view and travels to the right.

Additional notice to my last report:
First of all: it is definitely a comet.
Second: I definitely couldn't find the object in the last 4 of
Toni's 6 positions even in 1024 images. There is possibly a hint
of the object in the 4:30 image but that's not above the noise
level. The object - in my opinion - is only visible from 1:31 to
5:06.

1.)I confirm the claim by T. Scarmato of yet another June
sungrazer. I did not see the object in C3. Rough C2 positions
below.
2.) Donn, to make a comet claim you must use coordinates to
identify the object. An official description of what is needed to
claim an object is on the website in the 'Found Something' section.
Also in this section we list the common things people mistake for
comets. Please take a look at it as it sounds to me like your
reporting a star. Another helpful hint: try identifying past
comet claims to get an idea for what the motion, appearance, etc.
of the sungrazers are.

The positions you inidcates don't follow a Kreutz orbit at any
time of year.

DISREGARD LAST POST.
I can't get good XY's on it's position, it is a "point"
in 3 images but "may" probally be noise. I enlarged the 512
images 1:2 but have no time to get 1024 size, too long
to download with a modem.

Comment: the motion of the object is in agreement with the

absolutely nothing can be seen in the 1024x1024 images. Only in
one image I can see something at the indicated position, the
other images show definitely nothing. You must have eagle eyes or something. Not good for your report:success ratio, I think...

Should have checked C3 before C2.
Btw, Toni, the comet fragment reported by Rob is actually
Xaviers comet (C/2001 M8 (SOHO)).

Toni reports C3 and his current object in C3 is different from
yesterdays comet - yesterdays comet was reported my myself in C2.
And I call it fragment, because SOHO comets can hardly be called
comets at all, since they are all just small fragments. Okay,
thats philosophical...

necessary... :) )
2.) Rob's claim definitely indicates the positions of Xavier's
find. If one doesn't believe just download the images.
3.) Toni, sorry but I think Maik looked at the wrong positions.
I couldn't find anything down to the noise level at your
indicated positions.

could you or anybody else please solve this mystery?
I detected the bright C2 comet, which I think it was Xaviers
one from yesterday. Then Toni posted something in C3. I looked
at C3 without checking Toni's positions and saw something.
Now I see that Toni's positions don't match the one of what I saw,
namely (1024x1024, 0,0 upper left)
