I tried to find the latest posts by Toni, Mike and Pavel:
I wasn't able to see any object at Toni's position (by the way:
the 14:18 image is missing in the report). Seems like it's
something down in the noise.
I also didn't find anything on the positions Pavel posted (I also
checked the 13:42 image).
I can't say anything about Mike's report. There's something faint,
possibly also in the 13:42 image but I wouldn't tell it comet so
far.

I've examined the images indicated by P. Laquale and would say
that the points are classic examples of cosmic ray hits. First,
the apparent motion of the object is erratic (moving first towards
the left, and then a sharp right turn). Second, the appearance
(morphology) of the points changes randomly.
Finally, a brief comment. The sensitivity of both C2 and C3 goes
way down in the region of the images close to the occulter edge.
This is due to the vignetting caused by the occulter. This is
advantageous for observing the corona, as it allows observations
at a wide range of heights without needing an instrument with a
huge dynamic range. This is because the coronal brightness falls
off very rapidly with height. However, this vignetting means
that we are less likely to see comets close to the occulter. So,
my point is, be suspicious of anything you see close to either
occulter.

I am unable to confirm either of T. Scarmato's latest claims for
comets in May 3, 2001 C3 images. Note, the second claim has
positions which fall smack in the middle of the pylon. If you
draw an imaginary line from the bottom left corner of the images
to the center of the image, the sensitivity of C3 is zero (0)
along that line. The image is fully vignetted there by the
presence of the pylon which holds the occulter. Therefore, any
points you see there are guaranteed to be cosmic ray hits on the
CCD.

Doug and all,
just a question: I am not so intensively into comet hunting in
SOHO images anymore. But I was following the discoveries over the
last few months nevertheless. Although it is clearly stated that
at least four images are necessary for a discovery announcement I
have seen more announcements after two images than after four.
If the object is clearly a comet (i.e. tail or very diffuse) I can
understand postings after two images. But if its only a point than
it is a wild goose chase. And sometimes one may have luck. But
others, who have waited for at least four images may lose their
credit.
Same for me this morning when I saw two images and was waiting
desperately for the next ones. When I was sure after the fourth
image that it is a comet I saw that Kazimieras had already posted
after two images. I think its a kind of sport and there are some
rules to follow.
Kazimieras, this is not against you, I am fine with my findings
before, but I think it is a basic question here for all searching.
Sorry for my rant. ;)

Hi all,
Due to other work commitments, I am unlikely to have much
time this week to check out the reports. I have forwarded a few
comments to Derek to check out. I may be able to do something
Wednesday. Or possibly Friday. Thanks for sending in your
reports.
Please, once you've reported an object with positions,
even if it is only 2 images. Wait until there a enough images, at
least 4, before posting again. Don't post after every single image.
There is no new information in that and it makes it more difficult
to track the posts. Also, you've already got the one post in for
credit, so there is no need to keep posting. One follow-up with
the final details is sufficient. Also, we have frequent data gaps,
for a variety of reasons. If you think you see something in the
last image or two before a gap, that certainly isn't sufficient to
post a report. Wait for the gap to fill in. Please.
There, I've written a paragraph that starts and ends with
the word 'please'. I'm sure there must be a law against that.

I've examined all of the reports and here's my take on them. But
first, an announcement. Please. Four points is a minimum. Yes,
we accept fewer, but only when it's such an obvious comet even
my Mom would recognize it. Please, don't guess. Don't speculate.
Don't hope. Watch comets which have been confirmed before trying
to report one yourself. Sorry, this is a big post. Please read it,
all of it, and consider the points that I raise. These are
cursory discussions. Not meant to be talked out here as a
discussion group. E-mail me if you want more information
Doug
1) M. Frohlich's report on May 3 is indeed a star. No, I've
not bothered to identify which one. No time.
2) P. Laquale's report on May 4. The object appears in only 4
frames, and changes in brightness quite rapidly. We can not
in any way verify any object if it appears in only 4 frames and
does not fit an expected profile (either an extended object, or
with a tail, or on a Kreutz trajectory and changing in brightness
as expected.)
3) M. Boschat's C3 claim on May 4. Only 2 points. Should not
have been posted. Nothing more than cosmic rays.
4) K. Cernis' May 5 C2 claim. Still under consideration. Probably
a real comet.
5) T. Scarmato's May 5 claim. Nothing there. See comment below.
6) E. Schwab's claim for May 5. The main point to make here is
that the points are so far apart, that there is essentially no
way to relate them to each other. It's a statistical argument. The
cosmic ray count is so high, if you consider any range of allowable
'velocities', you will always find something. Also if the
comet is near the Sun, the apparent velocity is too high. The
maximum velocity a body falling from infinity to the Sun will have
is about 600 km/sec. And that's at the Sun's surface. It's slower
than that in the C2 FOV. For those who want something to do.
a) Calculate the exact escape velocity of the Sun.
b) Determine the maximum number of pixels/hour that would be in C2
and in C3.
7) M. Oates claim on May 6. Interesting. Still under consideration.
8) M. Frohlich (I hope I'm spelling that correctly) claim for May 6.
This is a case of connect the dots (cosmic rays). The object
makes a right turn which just isn't natural.
9) E. Schwab claim for May 7. Hey, it's only 3 points. You've
managed to catch this 'disease' as well. And, as I'm sure you've
since realized, there's nothing in the subsequent images. Cosmic
rays.
10)T. Scarmato's claim for May 7. Definitely cosmic rays. But let
me add a few comments.
a) If you have a ? next to one of the data points, then you
effectively only have 3 data points. If there is a questionable data
point, it doesn't count towards the 4 image minimum
b) Toni, I still believe there must be something wrong with the image
processing you are doing. For example, in the latest post. At
14:42 you say the point is bright. But, I've checked the raw data
and that point is only 40 total counts above the background. That
is less than 2 counts/second. Bright comets are 100's to 1000's
of counts per second. As for the point at 14:18 UT. In the whole
area around the point you give, there is nothing exceeding a change
of 5 counts from the background. Dividing by the typical C2
exposure time gives 0.2 counts per second. That is so far in
the noise that there is no way to say there's anything there. Here's
my suggestion, if it's not at least as bright as the 4th point in
your post (which you label as bright), then ignore it. It's probably
not real. |

This is an extreamly faint one, you may not accept it Doug,
but I think it worthy of reporting nevertheless.
This is a preliminary post to get my claim in, I will work on
this more this morning and post again with better positions,
and state it if I still think it a possible comet

I have always given credit to anyone, no matter how few images and
or positions they report. That's not something I wanted to
publicize too widely. Lest, I get lots of spurious claims with
2 or 3 positions. Of course, I already get lots of spurious claims,
even with the minimum of 4.
Generally, if a comet is bright enough and extended enough to look
cometary, then fewer than 4 images is okay. Though, not really
desired. Also, some observers are better at distinguishing comets
from the noise than others. So, I don't mind so much if they submit
an occasional report with fewer than 4 images. Some people post
virtually every day and are wrong over 99% of the time. Others
are accurate to that sort of level.
This latest comet was probably right on the edge. I wouldn't have
believed it with only 4 images, but I would certainly have watched
it closely.
With all of this in mind, let me give you all the first warning.
Beginning June 1st, I'll be recording the number of posts for
each observer, as well as the number of comets discovered by each
observer. At periodic intervals, I will be posting on the web
page the success rate of each observer.

This is in 3 images so far. It looks like a comet it's
in the right place and has the right motion. It is diffuse
with no tail evident in the 512 images. I don't need to wait
for 4 images, as it's quite evident that this is a comet.

Hi all,
This is just to make sure everyone is aware that all of the
reports made so far today refer to the same comet, which was first
reported by myself. Apparently only by a whisker.
Also, for those not aware, I do not strictly follow the
rules, as I don't list the image size or origin for the measurements.
But, as I've said before, unless stated otherwise, all observations
are for full-resolution images with (0,0) in the bottom-left
corner. This is the LASCO convention. When other people post
positions, I convert them to match this convention.

First, I can confirm the M. Oates claim for the first object on
May 23. The preliminary positions are given below. I'm waiting
on at least one more image before confirming the trailing object.
As far as the I. Peretto claim goes, it's tantilizingly suspicious,
but does only appear in 4 frames. Also, it appears in the middle
of the image and is bright in the first images, so the question
is, where was it before then? So, I do believe this to be one
of those fortuitous arrangements of cosmic rays which closely
mimic a comet.
I am unable to see anything at the location of the T. Scarmato claim
for C3.

I cannot confirm P. Laquale's latest claim. The velocity of the
reported positions and the variation in brightness both fail
to meet my criteria. That is, the 4th point is far brighter than
any of the other points. And, the velocity in the horizontal
direction is inconsistent, changing as follows (1 pixel/minute,
1.2 pixels/minute, 0.7 pixels/minute, 1.6 pixels/minute). Just
not realistic.

Hi all,
Yes indeed, that is a star. Sorry, don't know which one.
This message is to inform everyone that both Derek and I will be
on travel next week, plus this weekend is a big holiday weekend
for those of us in the USA. So, we will be checking e-mail,
but don't expect any action from us until we return June 4. Any
actions we are able to take should be considered a bonus. Please
try to police yourselves and don't let the posts get out of control.
And please, be polite to each other.

John,
Just checked your report. Seems to be a combination of noise and
(perhaps) a star. One thing is the same Doug mentioned at some of
the other reports: The relative motion of the object varies to
much. Indeed it deccelerates very much.

I hope that some of "us" observers

like Doug says on the form - a comet

say to others re-read Doug's

This is a very odd one, very diffuse and getting fainter
may not even show in the 4th image. The path is consistant
with a kreutz for this time of year.

Well, as being independent in this case I would say:
1. Yes, there is anything.
2. The object is not visible in the 16:26 UT image. If you compare
the relative movements it must be narrowly out of the FOV.
Indeed I could not identify it in the 1024 image (comparing
with brightness, shape, etc. There's a piece of noise in the
area but that's not the object)
3. Mike B and O, don't care about who will get credit. The object
isn't visible in the 17:50 UT image and therefore it violates
the 4 image limit for real objects. So this might be called the
3rd X/ comet this year.

UPDATE: Possible comet in realtime C2 images
Looks like Mike Boschat and myself have reported the same
object. But the image at 17:50 only shows a very faint smudge
where the comet should be, Mike Boschat indicates a position for
16:25, but that is not the object, it's too sharply defined
compared to the diffuse object and is noise. So I doubt very
much that this will be accepted as a comet as it does not meet
the minimum critera of 4 positions.

UPDATE:
Just a quickie, the comet is still visible in image 18:06
at X=818 Y=83 (0,0 bottom left in 1024 images)
Note in my report, I had the Y cooridinates inverted, sorry.
So there is a chance this may be excepted. It also looks like
Mike Boschat's original post is before mine.

Update also:
Wow! talk about close. I took all the images
and reversed them to greyscale then to black on
white. I could see the "fuzzy" thing only on two images
even after enlarging the 512 to 1:2. But, as Sebastian
mentioned it's not there after 1750 UT and I also cannot
see it after that either.
Now, as to my 1626 UT observation, when I loop
images my eye catches the object, then I stop
and do a "manual" loop using my arrow keys, back and forth
like a blink comparitor, when I followed the object back
it looked like it was on the frames edge, that is why I
put the 1626 UT. Also I enlarge the 512 images 1:2
to see better, to get 1024 takes too long download with
a modem.
Please accept my apology for this long post...
One thing - it got rid of my migrane headache :)

I'm totally confused now!
Is it a Comet or not?
I just saw Mike Oates report saying - "yes"?
and I re-looped the images,
I see the fuzzy comet? nearing a star in the area but at
the 1806 UT image I can't see it. I just cannot download the
1024 images to look and get better quality and I am still
using the 512 enlarged to do this...
Mike Boschat - extremely confused as to what's happening!

Bharat,
I haven't got any idea what images or camera you think of and
where the origin of your coordinates is but although there are
some reasons why you haven't spot a comet:
Your relative movement varies very tough. If - and I think so -
the images are consecutive this is very unphysical for a real
object. There's also a inconsistance in the trail. Your last
x-position "jumps" very much to the right.
