It is faint and visible in 4 consecutive images from 2001/04/02
from 14:06 to 15:06 UT in bottom left quadrant on the right of the date.
The object is small, faint, fuzzy without obvious tail.
It is more faint on the third and fourth image.

Concerning today's two posts:
1. Toni's onject is not visible in the images of 14:18 and 15:42.
The positions of 12:42 and 13:42 seems to spot a star.
2. I can confirm Xavier`s possible comet in C2 but I don't
congratulate so for (Nothing against you Xavier ;-)) ) The
problem is that it is definitively visible in only 4 images
and not more so possobly Doug won't call it a confirmed comet.
(If he confirms I will congratulate you, of course Xavier!)

I'm unable to confirm the T. Scarmato claims for a comet in C2 and
C3 on April 1, 2001. Note, only extremely bright comets can
be observed close to the occulter in C3 (such as the positions
indicated by Toni.) That region of the images is heavily vignetted,
that is, shadowed. So, any object you can see close to the
occulter should be visible further out in C3. Here's my
suggestion, never look for comets in C3 within about
150 pixels of the center of the image.

Report of Archive double comets from 7 Nov 1998
This is a serendipitous discovery.
I am writing an article and as part of this I am cataloguing
all the twin/multiple comets found with SOHO. There were some
comets for which I did not have the images for, so I downloaded
them, and while looking for the twin comets of 1998/11/07;
C/1998 V2 (SOHO-252) and C/1998 V3 (SOHO-253) discovered by
X.Leprette, I found quite by chance, a another double comet.
This pair are very close, the fainter one following on immediately
behind the first, slightly brighter one. Both are faint and
diffuse with no tails evident. They precede the known comets by
a short time, the known comets are in image 22037744.fts
0,0 in bottom left corner of 1024x1024 images.

VERY BRIGHT COMET IN C2 IMAGES!!!!
I just checked the b/w (telemetry) images on the LASCO homepage
and found a very bright comet in those images not yet published
in the normal resolutions.
The comet obviously was hidden behind the C3 pylon.
Images: at least 17:54, 18:06!!!
If normal pictures are out I will gif proper positions.

After making some estimations extrapoliting the positions I think
the comet must have entered the C2 FOV abround 15:54 or 16:08
today (Apr 08, 2001).
The fullsize animation on my webpages has around 300kB. So I will
show the comet in another animation using only a part of the
whole images. I will add new images to the animatian as soon as
they come in.
It's difficult to work with b/w images as there is no archive to
download earlier images. So this is really "realtime" ;-))

Congratulations Sebastian (and shame on everyone).
The very bright comet reported by S. Hoenig was indeed visible
in C3. Of course, the vignetting due to the pylon obscured
the comet enough to make it harder to see. Though I know most
of you have seen comets much fainter than this one. Oh well,
it's to be expected that the pylon will cause us problems at
this time of year.

Regarding Toni's claims:
I cannot confirm any of the reports: That one in C2 is a single
dot varying very much in brightness and the one in C3 is obviously
somthing down in the noise.

Regarding Toni's report:
The object he thinks of is just noise of the recent particle
storm. Two things against a comet:
1. Rapid change in brightness and shape
2. Inconsistant positions
I think we should be careful with reports through the snow.

Regarding my last report, finally this morning I Have
download the images at 1024 pixel.
I am partially in agreement with Sebastian.
I Have noted that, generally, the "tail" of the cosmic ray
are not diffuse.
On images at 512 pixel the tail of the object reported is
diffuse and on images at 1024 seem not visible.
Moreover, on 512 image at 2001/04/12 13:31 (103,487),
near the number 1 of the day (12) there is a brigth point that seem in agreement.
Yet, there is a remarkable variation in shape that is against
the ipotesis of comet.

There is a faint object in a 3 LASCO C2 B/W images at positions
X,Y : 164,195 (01 Apr 13; 14:30 UT)
X,Y : 169,192 (01 Apr 13; 15:30 UT)

In the second image (15:30 UT) the object is bright and diffuse
because enter in the solar flare. It is a comet ?

I am unable to confirm any of the recent reports. Note, many of
these contain fewer than 4 images. If it's not in 4 consecutive
images, it's porbably not real.
As for P. Laquale's claim for April 13, there is no flare or CME
at 15:30. I checked the images assuming the origin of the
measurements was in both the top left and the bottom left and
could find nothing convincing.
For T. Scarmato's claims in C2 and C3 on April 12, I also can find
nothing convincing.

I have examined T. Scarmato's recent claims. I don't believe
any of them to be real objects. In the case of the archive claim
of 99/08/17, there are only 3 obvious points. There is no reason
to believe the object would have faded by the 4th image.
In the case of the 01/04/17 claim, I can see nothing at all in
the images at the locations indicated. That is, there is
nothing above the level of the noise in the images.
Finally, I heard on CNN this morning that various US Gov't.
agencies are monitoring web users using cookies. Apparently,
NASA is one of those agencies. I do not use cookies to try to
track any usage. Thought you'd like to know. Personally, I'm
more than a little offended by this news.

I found a slowly moving object now in the C3 1024 size
animation, in the lower part of the picture about 50 pixels above
the clock numbers. It appears to be the minor planet Juno
at mag 9.5.

A recent observation puts comet 45P/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdusakova a

A flurry of activity today. While I'm fairly certain of all 4
claims, you'll have to wait for final confirmation. However, I thought I
should send this out considering this is a 'first' for SOHO. Consider all
of this preliminary information. All comets seen in C2. I have not
checked C3 yet, but due to the pylon in C3, I don't expect to find more

An object on right side of pylon,
parallel to it move towrads Sun.
1/4 way from occultat disk.
Here are the (approximate) XY coordinates of
the object.

Comet reported yesterday is also in C3 images

Update:
First, I can confirm that all 4 comets reported on Friday have
been confirmed. The 3rd object, reported by M. Oates was seen
in C3 images. Also, the 2nd object was also reported by T.
Scarmato, though with errors in the image times. Upon further
review, I have decided to give both Xavier and Toni credit for
this one.
As far as reports since then. I am unable to confirm the reports
of M. Boschat or P. Shkreby. T. Scarmato has withdrawn his claims
for April 22 and April 23, so I have not reviewed those.

I've checked E. Schwab's report and can't confirm it as a real
object. It appears to be cosmic ray hits. The motion is not
consistent and the object doesn't appear in subsequent frames.
Also, the points are widely separated, which makes correlations
difficult. These are a classic description of false candidates
due to cosmic rays.

Yes, the latest report is very definitely just random cosmic rays.
The variation of the reported object is quite dramatic and very
unphysical for a comet.

I can confirm the object posted by Toni. It is a medium bright
comet(?) with a hint of a tail. Pre-Congrats (until Doug confirms)
It is very wide so might be a twin? Let's wait.

Yes, that's a nice comet, the credit goes to T. Scarmato. Due to
calibration images being taken, there will be no LASCO images
between 17 and 20 UT. Also, there are lots of earlier images
missing due to a problem with a DSN antenna station. That data
can be recovered.
Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, nobody else is able to
repoint their instruments. It seems it could look quite nice
in C2. We'll find out. SOHO-309.

Nice find Toni. I note that the comet may be faintly
visible in images around 20-21hr on April 25th, however,
I dismissed it at the time as noise.

seems to "expand" to be wide diffuse?

The comet I reported earlier is in the bottom left region (I mentioned bottom right by mistake earlier).
The location of the center is at 301x918 on the C2 image taken
on 27th April 2001 at 01:31.

I can confirm the object reported by S. Hoenig as indeed a real
comet, apparently a Kreutz sungrazer. It's visible in 8 frames,
yeah for high cadence, beginning at 0430 UT on April 30. That's
in the C2 telescope. I haven't checked C3 yet. Rough positions
below.
Also, note, there may be a loss in network connection for a couple
of hours starting sometime soon. Can't be helped. So, you will
lose ability to post to the web page temporarily. Also, e-mail
to me will not get through, so just be patient. Thanks.
