I am also in agreement. Please, if there is any doubt, don't post
with fewer than 4 data points.
Also, as we are now in our 6th year of operation, we can look at
prior data for some guidance. Due to the reduction in sensivity
caused by the presence of the pylons, this is a bad time of year
for us. In the previous 5 years, only 7 Kreutz sungrazers have
been observed in the month of March. So, don't expect too much
activity. Things will pick up next month.

there is a "star" that seem have a relative
motion respect the near brigth star at position

Toni and everyone,
I've compared the two objects and there is no relative
motion between them. Over a short time series, there are effects
which can cause some small apparent motion, especially in binned
images. The sensitivity from pixel to pixel changes. Also, the
objects are sometimes centered in a pixel and sometimes falling
on the boundary of 2 to 4 pixels. These can all cause image to
image variations which can 'fool' the observer into seeing
apparent motion or changes in brightness which aren't real.

I've checked all of the reports since my last post. I don't think
any of these are cometary objects. The posts are a mix of noise
and stars. Note, anything moving horizontally is likely to be a
star. Please rule out that it's a star before posting a report.
Also, for our newbies, never post something seen in only a single
image. Even if it happened to be real, we could never confirm it.
But physically, we expect real objects to appear in multiple images.

1) The report by M. Roman is just a cosmic ray hit or piece of
debris. I'm leaning towards the latter. See the general
information on http://sungrazer.nascom.nasa.gov/cometform.html
Also, please you returns when posting messages.
2) I cannot confirm the reports of T. Scarmato or M. Boschat.
3) There is a scheduled power outage for the building in which
this web server (and my computer, since they are the same thing)
resides. Thus, from about 9pm local time Friday night (0200 UT
Saturday) until as soon as Saturday night, but possibly Sunday
night (so early UT on Sunday or Monday). We don't know when
it'll be back up. You'll still be able to watch real-time data,
just not report it. C'est la vie.
4) FYI, I'm off to France on Saturday. I promise, I'll be in

Possible archive sungrazer comet in C2 frames from 08 June 1997
The object is clearly visible in 3 consecutives images (823 to 825).
In these three images the possible comet looks like a faint blob,
faintly condensed, round, with no tail. The aspect and the moving is
coherent.
Unfortunately it is no possible to see it before and after these images.
22014822.fits and 22014826.fits are in 832x256 format.
In 2201427.fits the object has faded quite a lot and I'm not sure
of my reported position for this one.
May be Doug will be able to spot it in 512 images (22014816 to 819).
I wonder whether the comet do not cross the path of a faint star in
these images. In 818 and 819 one can see a faint blob separate from
the star. But I'm not sure that it is really the same object.

Possible archive sungrazer comet in C2 frames from 19 June 1997
The object is clearly visible in 4 consecutives 512x512 images (429 to 432).
The possible comet looks like a bright object, condensed, round, with no tail.
I think that it is only visible in one 1024x768 image (442) about
three hours after. This one seems to show the same aspect, bright,
condensed and round.

I have just inspected all the C2 images from August 1996
This is what I have found...
Possible Sungrazer 1996/08/25
This what I will call an X/Comet i.e. it may be a
comet but there is not sufficient data to prove it.
It is a faint round diffuse object with no tail.

SOHO-2
I have found two images of what I believe is SOHO-2 in C2 images
This comet is only reported to have been seen in C3 images.
The first image looks like comet with a hint of a tail, the
second image shows an elongated smudge as if the comet has
disintegrated, the position of this image is only approx.

Concerning the recent "split off" report:
According to what Mike Oates said after the SOHO-294 item, my
opinion is:
Looking back at the last bright comets I would say that we all
must have won the experience that it is futile to post any
fragmented pieces close to bright comet. There are so many
effects that can appear as a fragment that no one can finally say
anything. Noise can be everywhere, in front of a comet and even
in the comet's tail or coma.
If anybody doesn't think so: okay, that'S just my opinion.

Mike B's comet seems to have passed its best times and is slightly
fading and bursting. So I expect getting fireworks in C2.

Boschat's comet is coming in C2 now. It's visible with a nice
tail from 3 images from 26/03 23:50 to 24/03 0:26 UT.
May be a second frament is following behind, but I'm not sure.

Dear Doug,
regarding my last report, the object seem to be visible
also on images at:
2001/03/27 13:42 (215,354)
2001/03/27 14:18 (217,352)
Is diffuse and moving toward the top. In the same zone
there is a faint star that move from left to right.

Possible "fragment" in sungrazer in C2 images - 20010327_0150 UT
It appears as a small "dot" in front of the comet
in these two images only..
Here are the (approximate) XY coordinates of
the object and an image of the area.
****** NOTE ******
x-coordinates are probably correct,
but y-coordinates may be off by
several pixels.

I've looked at the 'fragment' reports for the comet from Mar 25-27 and
and don't see anything the least bit convincing. A report with
only 2 data points? Please.
And I can't find anything at the positions Toni reported for
March 26 or 27. Toni, I think you're looking for stuff
down in the noise. We can't positively identify anything
at the level of the noise. We have to be certain of an object.
You've seen enough of the ones I have confirmed now to know what
sort of object to be looking for.
I'll try to get to the archive claims of M. Oates ASAP.

Oops. And of course, I'll be getting to the archive claims
of X. Laprette as well.

Looking through C3 Telescope image, I spotted a comet like image in at least four frames traveling just above the Southwest veiwing obstruction inward towards the Sun. The specific frame is 2001/03/26/15:18.

The object seem visible on 7 cosecutives images at positions:
2001/03/20 03:06 (86,499)
2001/03/20 03:26 (88,497)
2001/03/20 03:50 (91,493)
2001/03/20 04:06 (93,490)

The object is diffuse and seem too like the comet SOHO-282.
The positions are approximate.

Regarding the report by T. Scarmato of a C2 object on 20 Mar 2001.
I am not able to find a moving object with a consistent shape
at the positions reported.

Venus is just off the top edge of the C3 field now. You can see just a slight glow at the field edge.
