SOHO-LASCO Comet Reports for 200102

Hi all,

	Sorry I haven't posted anything.  I agree I'm not able

to find anything at the positions T. Scarmato posted.  I spent

yesterday working with him to try to confirm that he's sending

proper coordinates and to reduce his number of false reports.

I forgot to post this yesterday.

I think that one reason for there being a number of 'false'

reports is that these are often based on 512x512 images. These

images are reduced versions of the 1024x1024 images and various

artifacts can be introduced that may look cometry, i.e. diffuse.

Also a lot of detail is also lost.



As many of the comets are rather small and/or faint it would

make sense to only use the 1024x1024 images. I realise that not

everyone has a fast internet connection and can't do this, but

if an object is suspected in 512x512 images in may be a good idea

to at least check some of the full size images before making a

post, thereby saving Doug and his team much time in checking them out.

What you saw is in my opinion a SINGLE image cosmic ray hit. But you

have to giv proper coordinates (if possible in more than just one image)

for confirmation.

Regarding the Feb 2 reports by M. Roman.



If he is referring to the long thin streak, which is really closer

to the 7 or 8 o'clock position in a horizontal direction, then

that is not a comet.  As Sebastian says, it's a cosmic ray.  A high

energy particle hitting the CCD, and in this case, at a very, very

shallow angle.  So in a sense, it is real, but it's definitely

not cometary.

Brief description of comet:



 Highly unusal, could be noise,

but because no more images have come

in I will post this. A point moving

parallel to the pylon but away from

the Sun, a bit in the ejection.

 I am now downloading the larger

1024 gifs for the same time frame

and if there is nothing I will post

that it was noise. If I am

still unsure I will post coordinates.

I see Michael Oate's comet Jan 3 22h - its around mag. 7 with

a hint of tail.  It should get fairly bright in 12 hours

or so. Still checking for the second fragment though...

 I see that either:



A: comet has developed a tail.



    OR



B: comet has "fragment" following it

   making a look like tail. 



I enlarged the 512 images 2x size and 

reversed the image to greyscale.



 I will say that this comet "will"

have a fragment following in C2.

The bright comet now entered C2. As it last very long to download 

the 1024 images I spied on the b&w images of the lasco hompage.

It looks like the comet broke in at least 2 or mayby 3 fragments.

The first fragment seems to be a thicker dot in the tail close

behind the core. The second is some way behind the comet.

Comet no gets totally pulverized. I think I could identify what I

called to be the second fragment in the following images (19:54 

and 20:06) but I doubt one can call this comets...



So far: No new comets in C2 images.

A fairly bright comet was reported by M. Oates on Saturday, Feb 3.

The apparent Kreutz sungrazing comet was followed from near the

edge of the C3 field-of-view and was eventually seen in C2 on Feb

4.  The comet was fading rapidly as it entered the C2 FOV.  It

developed a long, thin tail. There are quite a few data gaps

which should be filled in today. Preliminary measurements of

positions are given below.

A few comments about the comet reports from this weekend.



1) So far I do not agree with any of the claims of a second

fragment.  I don't see anything in C3 or C2 that convinces me.

Feel free to push me on this.  However, you must send in very

accurate coordinates.



2) Several people, Toni and Pavel, both posted reports for the

comet.  But of course, it had already been posted and verified

by 3 other people the previous day.  Please, before sending in

a report, check the http://sungrazer.nascom.nasa.gov/recent.html

page and verify that what you're posting is new information.

Yes, that's quite a comet found by Sebastian.  I'm measuring the

accurate positions now to send to the CBAT.  UVCS will try to

observe it tomorrow morning.  I'll be in bright and early local

time to help with that.  I'm predicting this comet will reach

a peak brightness of about magnitude 3.5.  That puts it in the

top 5% of all SOHO comets.  Sorry, I'm too busy to say much more.

I tend to agree with Sebastian, but after some image

processing I think that there may be two fragments behind

the main comet in the tail, not just one as Sebastian reports.

I agree with Mike, there are indeed 2 fragments. As I had a bad

resolution at the university's iMac I could only see the first

one. They are clearly visible in the 13:42 image.

The comet SOHO-294 entered the C2 FOV at 18:06 UT on Feb 7.

It's at a height of 6.3 Rsun. UVCS is currently pointing at a

height of 6.1 Rsun.  



We should see it in UVCS very soon!



Don't know about any fragments.  That'll be something to check 

tonight.

I have finally collected all positions for the fragment I

reported in C3 (and perhaps a bit fast) in C2.

Comments on the C2 positions:

In the C2-1954 image the fragment is best visible. You can see

that the tail of the main component seems to end or get fainter.

After this incision in the tail it becomes brighter again. This

incision with the brightening can be seen in every of the image.

So I took this as a reference.

There was a fuzzy object, moving left-to-right, from (appeared) Dec 28, 2000 to Jan 4, 2001 (disappeared), above the Sun at about 1:00.



It had a bright center and a dim fuzzy tail which appeared to shift left-to-right.



I looked at you archive and it might have been:

C/2000 W1 (Utsunomiya-Jones) 

(December 29, 2000 - January 3, 2001)



However .. I'm new at this and not quite sure of what I'm seeing

As for other comets (I hesitate to call them fragments) in

the FOV along with SOHO-294.  I did a quick check and yes, I

think I see something there.  I haven't had much time to check

all of the claims.  SOHO-294 and a meeting I'm attending are

taking all my time.



Yes, Tom Bruce, that was C/2000 W1.  If you check the archived

pages for December, there are positions for C/2000 W1 given.

Again, a reminder.  If you only see something in 2 or 3 images,

do not post it.  There is a difference between seeing something

in lots of images but only reporting a few positions to get the

information posted and something which is in only 2 or 3 images.

M. Oates has reported his discovery of an apparent Kreutz sungrazing comet

in LASCO C2 images.  This comet was visible in images from Feb 8, 2001.

The comet was not evident in a preliminary inspection of the LASCO C3

images.  The apparent position angle of this comet was such that the pylon

holding the C3 occulter most likely obscured the comet.  Preliminary

measurements of the positions are given at the end of this e-mail.





Also, a general note for all possible interested parties.  Many observers

have indicated that they feel the comet C/2001 C2 (SOHO-294) fragmented

while in the LASCO FOV.  I've not been able to find the time to

investigate this and I'm not likely to be able to look at this for some

time.  See the images Mike Oates has posted at

http://www.ph.u-net.com/comets/20010207_fragments.gif to see what he is

suggesting.  This note is so more people are aware of this and so anyone

who would like to can investigate this.

I have inspected the raw C3 images and found that 

the comet is present in quite a few images. The comet

is just at the edge of the pylon and some of the comet

images have been interfered with as a result. This may

make accurate obtaining positions difficult.



The mask used on the realtime GIF images covers these

comets images, so it was only visible in C2 images on

8 Feb 2001.



The comet looks diffuse with no tail visible.

SOHO-294 my thoughts...



I know I contributed to the 'fragment' theory about this comet

but to be quite honest, I think it should be dropped.



There is just not enough evidence to say yes or no, the object/s

is/are not consistent and certainly does not appear in nearly enough frames to be even remotely considered.



I have seem many other claims (mostly my own) that have far more

credibility as comets than this and been rejected, due to an

insufficient number of comet images.



It would be nice to think that this comet has some fragments, but

without conclusive proof, we will have to leave it at that.



One other thing that I forgot to mention when posting my

enhanced images, was that such enhancment can introduce artifacts

and we can fool ourself into thinking they are real objects. There

is so much noise in these images that we have to be very careful.

Very bright object in C2 taveling from right to left

towards the Sun. It does not seem to be a planet, what is it ?

UPDATE on last report:

I am quite sure that this is a comet, close inspection

shows it very slightly diffuse, and it is getting slightly fainter

as it gets closer to the Sun. I can't see it in C3 images. Have checked for any other objects that could be visible in this area

and can't find any.

There is an interesting feature on the lower right of C3, which 

emerges from the occulting disc at perhaps 22:00 on February 13.

This appears to be diffuse with a tail and is probably a plasma

feature, however it does appear to be moving faster than the 

local solar wind.  It is worth remembering that some comets do

disintegrate completely (eg 1999 S4) as they approach or recede

from the Sun and such objects could mimic solar events.

 I saw something similar in C2 last year, it looked

very much like a comet diffuse head and short

tail...caught me off guard really...but was part of 

the ejection.



This feature in C3 yesterday I noted is sililar 

and I would say part it is part of the streamer.

same that I reported in C2, at least that area of the C3 frame is

covered by the C2 field.

OT - My XY coordinate problem



 Most of you cannot match my XY coordinates

when I find a comet and I also cannot match

yours XY to see what you are looking at.



 When I loop the images I have to do

them in 4 sections because I cannot fit the 

whole image on my monitor. So, when I loop the lower

left section my XY is 0,460. If I loop

the upper left then it is 0,0 and the other

2 sections would have different XY's also. 



 I believe Doug mentioned this last year on this

form as to my XY problem and how to adjust to

get the "real" XY that you all could match up

to see were I am, so to speak.

Since Doug is away I have been trying to confirm/reject the recent

comet claims. It seems that you are doing a fine job by yourselves

but I must admit my disappointment in having such a large list of

"submissions" that only produce 2 new comets. We must remember

that the claim form is only for submission of comet claims.

It should not be used for general comments. Also, once a claim has

been posted it is neccessary to have only one confirmation

(without coords) unless an unusual circumstance arrises. Finally,

the 4 image limit should not be violated unless the comet is so 

obvious in appearance that even I could detect it!

that's just a SINGLE image cosmic ray hit and not visible in any

previous or following image.

I am unable to confirm the report of T. Scarmato for Feb 27.

Maybe as additional images come in things will change.



On another note, please don't post claims based on a single image.

One image just isn't enough to say anything about anything.

I don't think that the object you posted is a comet. Two reasons:

1st It has a high variety in brightness and shape and 2nd it is

not visible in the 21:18 image. Regarding the brightness of 

21:42 and 22:18 it should be.

Is possible that it is the same object that I Have reported

Toni,



this cannot be a comet or anything else because your positions

are within the mask used to create the images. Neither stars

nor comets are visible in there. By the way I could not find

anything in the 1024 images.
