Just to note that comet C/2000 W1 (Utsunomiya-Jones) has finally

left the SOHO/LASCO C3 field-of-view.  The last image in which

the comet was visible was 08:18 UT on Jan 4, 2001.  The comet is

fainter than when it entered the telescope FOV.  I've estimated

the V magnitude as it left the field to be 8.5 +/- 0.5.  That

compares to a magnitude estimate of 7.5 on Dec 28 when it entered

the C3 FOV.  I've not made any measurements, but I believe from

inspection of the images that the comet did actually brighten in

the period from Dec 28 to Dec 31 before fading.  There is no

longer any evidence of a tail in the LASCO images.

        It's taken several days, but I've checked all of the reports

submitted over the holiday period.  Actually, these go all the way back

to mid-December.  There are two non-Kreutz comets in the list.  These

two (probably related comets) follow the same apparent trajectory

separated by only a few pixels.  The second comet is fainter than

the first.

The object is moving towards the sun, but I'm not sure for a comet.

        I can confirm M. Boschats real-time discovery of a

sungrazing comet visible in LASCO C3 images on Jan 7-8, 2001.

Preliminary position measurements are given below.  So far, I've

not been able to locate the comet in C2 images, though it should

have entered the field of view by now.  Sorry Xavier, Mike's

coordinates do properly identify the comet, so he gets the credit.

Just cleaning up some unfinished business.  On Dec 26, 2000, M. Oates

reported a comet visible in LASCO C2 images on Dec 25, 2000.  After

much thought and discussion, I have finally accepted this and can

confirm the 5 observations listed below.  Note, the initial report

listed 8 observations.

First, let me say that I can't confirm the report T. Scarmato made

earlier today.



Second, I can confirm a report T. Scarmato made directly to me via

e-mail.  (I've already admonished him for this egregious error).

Note, if the comet were reported on the web by another person, that

person would have been given credit.



That report is as follows:



T. Scarmato reported to me his observations of a comet in

archived SOHO/LASCO C2 data.  This comet was visible on

May 11, 2000, several hours before the comet C/2000 J5

entered the C2 field of view.  Rough CCD position measurements

are given below.  I guess even with the pool of

observers we have, a comet occasionally slips through.

not be verified.  In particular, the points identified by

T. Scarmato vary in appearance and brightness in random ways,

suggesting that they are just cosmic ray hits in the detector.

	Note, the positions given by M. Boschat for the Jan 14

comet are too low by about 40 pixels in the y-position.  My

positions are at the bottom.

A few things.  One is, I think there is a second piece closely

following the 2000/04/30 archive discovery by M. Oates.

Discovered by Doug Biesecker.  Positions below.  I'm pretty

confident on this, but I'll wait for Derek to confirm.  The

M. Oates find for 2000/04/30 may be bright enough to find in C3,

so that still needs to be checked.

The M. Oates claims for 2000/06/10 and for 2000/06/23 are still

being considered.  As is the report of Pavel Shkreby for 

2001/01/14.  I just don't want to deal with that one until the

data gaps are filled in.



Note, the positions given  by T. Scarmato for C2 on Jan 14th are

nowhere near the comet discovered by M. Boschat.  I think there

must be a problem there.

Archive sungrazer in C2 images from 21 May 1996.



This was a very lucky find, it can only be seen in 512x512 images, and they are of poor quality. But what is interesting

about this, (and this is how I spotted it) is that four of the

images are only 5 mins apart, which meant that the comet appeared

to stay almost stationary for a few frames. There is very slight

movement between images, but only by one pixel or less.

The report of M. Oates for a comet on May 21, 1996 is still

under consideration.  I'm pretty certain that it's a real object.

However, note that the SOHO spacecraft was undergoing roll

maneuvers on that day.  Between the images at 14 UT and 20 UT, the

spacecraft was rolled 90 degrees.  Therefore, the positions

reported for 20 UT cannot be for the object observed at 14 UT.

One can always check 

http://lasco-www.nrl.navy.mil/daily_stat_srch.html

for the SOHO/LASCO status at any time during the mission.  Those

pages are mostly complete, but not foolproof.  If it's there, then

believe it.  But, not bit of necessary information has been

posted there.

Hi all,

	Trying to clear up some of the uncleared backlog.

1) I'm unable to confirm P. Shkreby's claim of a comet in images

from 2001/01/14.  The positions reported do not correspond to the

M. Boschat comet discovered earlier in the day.



2) I can confirm the D. Biesecker discovery of a comet in C2 images

from 2000/04/30, following closely behind the M. Oates comet on

that day.  I can't find the M. Oates comet in C3 images.  I think

it's too close to the pylon.  These fragments don't follow SOHO-111

exactly, but are displaced to the left.



3) The M. Oates report of an object in C2 images from 1996/05/21 is

in fact a star (HD 25230).  Because SOHO is rolled 90 degrees at

14 UT, stars are moving from the bottom towards the top at that

time.  SOHO is in a normal roll orientation by 20 UT.



4) I still can't find the M. Boschat comet of 2001/01/14 in C2

images.  I'm going to assume it's not there, unless someone else

can find it for me.  This reminds me a lot of SOHO-104, a Feb 2000

comet which also could not be found in C., even though I thought

it would be bright enough.



5) I'm still trying to confirm the M. Oates claims for comets in

images from 200/06/10 and 2000/06/23.  



6) The LASCO doors should be opened sometime today.  In case you

were not aware of it, SOHO went into 'safe' mode Sunday night.

Recovery was smooth and successful.

Informational notice:



LASCO was originally due to reopen the telescope doors on

Wednesday.  Because of a possibility of contamination from

debris thrown about when the CDS door is opened (it slams open,

shaking loose insulation) the LASCO doors are opened after

the CDS doors.  CDS had some instrumental problems yesterday, and

did not open the door as expected.  Thus, we are waiting on them

to make a decision.  We're expecting to be observing again sometime

today, but no guarantees.

I cannot confirm either of the reports by T. Scarmato made this

morning.  The apparent speeds of both 'objects' as reported are

highly variable.  Speeding up and slowing down at random.  Not

the sort of behaviour we expect for real objects.  Also, the first

object reported shows variations in shape.  For example, at

09:06 UT, the object appears as a streak, whereas at 09:30 it is

a point-like object.  Again, not something to expect from a real

object.  These are just random cosmic ray hits on the detector.

I think I have found a possible comet in LASCO C3 data

from 2000/07/01. This is a very faint object. Below are the

pixel locations of the object. The units:

Frame # : This is the image count from the start of the day in

my system - which results from excluding non-normal images and

images smaller than 1024x1024 from further processing.

Time : Seconds from midnight

X-pixel: Horizontal pixel count from lower left corner with the

lower left corner being (0,0).

Y-pixel: Vertical pixel count from lower left corner.

Amplitude: Once again these are units in my internal system

which includes a significant amount of image processing. I have

not made the calibration between my processed images and the raw

SOHO images. However to give some feeling for the value, SOHO 167

(C/2000 M9) has an average value of 300 amplitude units.

A few orders of business:



1) Thus far I cannot confirm the report by M. Boschat of a comet

in C3 beginning at 1742 UT on January 23rd.  If there is indeed

a comet there, it should turn out to be very bright, because the

reported position is 31 solar radii out.



2) I've taken a lot of time to consider the M. Oates claims for

C2 comets on 2000/06/10 and 2000/06/23 and in the end I've

rejected both claims.



3) I cannot confirm R. Gore's claim for a comet in 2000/07/01 C3

data.  I just don't see anything there.  I'll try to follow up

on this.



4) I cannot confirm either of the T. Scarmato claims for Jan 23rd.

I suspect once again just random cosmic ray hits.

Hi all,



this time I don't want to claim a comet but have a look at a

current C3 transit.



I think I could spot Neptune in C3 images of Jan, 21. At the

moment it disappeared behind the solar disc so it is not visible

in real-time images of today or yesterday.



I have measured the following positions:

Note that it is quite faint but fairly visible as it has some

3) Toni, the data points on images from 02:54-03:54 meet the

minimum requirements.  Unfortunately, there is nothing visible

from 04:06 onwards, despite the `object' brightening in previous

images.  So, once again, no comet.



4) Mike Boschat.  Haven't looked at your claim, but since you say

it's noise, I'll ignore it.

The reason why I think Mike O's report spots the same object than

Mike B's (and meanwhile Xavier') is that if you follow up the

positions of Mike O in the images before the break ("relative

movement") you will come to those of Mike B and Xavier.

Yes, the reports by M. Oates, M. Boschat and X. Leprette are

all the same comet.  My position measurements are given below.



This one is brighter than average.  And almost exactly one year

after SOHO-97.  Wow, almost 200 comets discovered (not observed)

in the past year.  This is SOHO-292.

Hi all,



I cannot confirm the T. Scarmato claim for 2001/01/25 in C2.



Also, I cannot find SOHO-292, the M. Oates discovery from yesterday

in C2.  It should have entered the C2 FOV sometime after 0400 UT.

I'm not too surprised it's not visible.  But, feel free to try

to find it yourself.

This is unusal, on the 1024

images the "point" stays at

a fairly uniform brightness, but when

looking at the 512 images it is

brighter on one image and slightly

fades on the second image. Why?

the position are only 4 consecutive.

The point seem moving toward the sun and not vary in shape

and brigthness.

I am not been able to confirm my last report using

I think that is noise.



Instead I Have observed another point that seem visible on

5 consecutive images 512x512 (0,0) top-left croner LASCO C3

LASCO C2, that probably is a combination of cosmic rays,

but I want know, if it si possible, your comment.

The object move toward the sun on a reliable orbit, but 

is diffuse on the first image, and became

it's the first time that i submit my reports and i'm not sure if it's correct.

The ipotethical object that i suppose to be a comet, is in the following images and positions ( the x-y coordinates are 0-0 above

left):

20010129_1642_c3 (512X512) at x=350 ; y=388 (faint)

20010129_1718_c3 (512X512) at x=386 ; y=378 (bright, near the sun flares)

20010129_1742_c3 (512X512) at x=484 ; y=376

20010129_1818_c3 (512X512) at x=516 ; y=406 (near the coronograph)

I am unable to confirm any of the reports made since my last

posting.  Let me repeat again, if you do not see the object in

at least 4 frames, do not post it.  Yes, there are exceptions, 

but those are rare.  I don't want everybody posting after 1 or

2 frames on suspicious points.
