as their SOHO numbers can now be assigned unambiguously.

Hello;

In regards to that Dec.4 report, forget it.
I made teh C2 images white background with black
stars, and that was hard on the eyeballs esp
in a dark room! looped nothing. Then greyscaled the
images, something there but now believe it was
anoter bit of "noise" that jumped making it connect
to look like a possible object moving.
C2 are tricky..
My apologies...

I don't believe that there is a real object at the positions
reported by S. Hoenig for Dec 5 0127-0226 UT. This is really
a classic case of how one can easily be fooled by random cosmic
rays.

Plotting the trajectory of the points, one gets a reasonable
curve. However, the apparent speed is a little bit on the high
side. Also, the individual points vary randomly in both their
shape and brightness from image to image. Finally, based on the
brightness in the image at 0226 UT, I would expect to find it in
the 0250 UT image, but there isn't anything in that image.

All in all, way too many negatives going against this one.

I think the brighter one coming into
the field at 20001206_0406 UT to
20001206_0450 UT may
be my first find of Dec 5th between
20001205_1618 to 20001205_2142 UT but
not sure. So I am reposting the

The first comet I saw that was in the

in this case I am putting the XY back again,
hope Doug can figure this out.

I have confirmed the 4 additional Kreutz sungrazing comets

since the last post. Two of these were archive discoveries and
two are real-time finds. There are many data missing for the Dec
5-6 period due to DSN problems. The two real-time comets were in
the FOV at the time of the data gap. I don't know if these data
are recoverable. At least one of the the comets was visible in
C3 and C2, but checking all of the C3 data will have to wait.

As always, times are approximate and the SOHO numbering
is tentative.

The missing data from Dec 5-6 have been filled in. SOHO 266

and 267 were both detected in the C2 and C3 telescopes. Rough
position measurements are given below.

Also, we expect to be able to observe the recently discovered comet
C/2000 W1 (Utsunomiya-Jones) in the C3 telescope. To be detected
by LASCO, a comet must reach elongation angles smaller than 7.5
degrees. C/2000 W1 will be within that range from about Dec 28,
2000 until about January 3, 2001. It'll move from left to right,
about 1/6th of the way from the top of the images.

Re; Mike Oates possible comet today Dec.7

From 0226-0350 UT. I re-looped those
images and reversed them to greyscale.
I see a very, very faint object on my
monitor moving like a comet but I loose
it after 5 frames because of this monitor's
resolution.

The problem is that I could also find the las three positions in

it in combination with the 1750-image but in the combination with
the 1024 x 1024 images.

There are quite a few reports I would like to have more time to

comet. Here's my summary:

Note, the 'y' coordinates reported for this comet were incorrect.
However, in a separate e-mail containing an annotated image, Mike
pointed out the real comet. Approximately correct positions are:

The bright object just entering the C3 FOV on the right side

beginning late on Dec 11/early on Dec 12 is indeed Mercury. I
noticed this particular transit was missing from the list when I
updated it with the Comet Utsunomiya-Jones, but of course,
but of course, forgot to update that.

I guess I'd better get to work on all of the Year 2001 transits.

The possible sun grazer that Xavier Leprette reported at dec 12 2000 08:21:16 in the real time image of C2 appears to have another possible comet near to it that is slightly below it and to the left at about a 8 O'clock position and traveling on the same course as the possible comet, it is in veiw just a short period of time before moving out of C2's veiw.

Regarding T. Scarmato's report, a close examination of the images

reveals what is most likely a star. Though it doesn't appear to
be in the catalog I'm using, as I use a very severely truncated
version of the Hipparcos Catalog which has a magnitude cutoff
at or about 9. I'll check on this further.

Hi Everyone.
I'm sorry that you're not gettin responses from me.
Unfortunately, I ended up being busy with other activities at
work yesterday and wasn't able to check all of the claims. I
did look at the 2 (3?) real-time non-Kreutz comets yesterday.
Cool! Nice spotting Mike and Sebastian. I'm not sure about that
3rd piece yet.

I'll be checking in regularly, but I won't be back at
work until January 2nd. Well, except for one day next week when
Comet Utsunomiya-Jones is in the field of view. The latest
reports put it at a visual magnitude of about 6.5.

As always, if we get the comet of the century (or at
least the comet of the mission), I'll get into work.

There's going to be a lot of work to catch up on after
the holidays. Happy holidays to all of you.

Correction - I think my last report actually is Comet Ut-Jones.

Positions are as follows:

Approx C3 1024x1024 positions ( x=0,y=0 => top-left corner):

8h 42m x=95,y=141
9h 18m x=98,y=141
9h 42m x=100,y=141
10h 42m x=107,y=141

Comet is around magnitude 6-7 with a faint tail-like appendage pointing to the upper left.

Terry

       The comet C/2000 W1 (Utsunomiya-Jones) entered the LASCO C3

field-of-view on Dec 28, 2000. It is visible in the northeast
corner of the images (upper-left), with a tail pointing
approximately radially away from the Sun. The tail is very thin
and is about 0.25 degrees in length at 1442 UT on Dec 28.
The estimated apparent V magnitude is 7.5 +/- 0.2 (statistical
error bar). The comet is moving left-to-right across the
images. There is also a very nice (backside, I think) Halo CME
in progress at this time.

Rough positions given below.
